Ambler Feedstore

I went there for dinner on Monday and had some mixed opinions on the place. Overall I was happy to see it open and will be returning but there were a few issues I had. I ordered the Feed Burger, my wife had the roast beef sandwich special and we shared an order of carnitas fries. I asked for the burger medium rare and I was surprised when the server said they only cook it medium to medium well. With a place that goes through the trouble of grinding their meat in house I would think they would cook it to people's preference. I asked for it as close to MR as possible and it did come out a perfect medium. The roast beef sandwich was good but with mashed potato on the roll it was a huge mess and eventually needed to be eaten with a knife and fork. The fries were good but the pork was very under seasoned.
As far as the physical space it had a strange vibe somewhere between a bar and a diner. I feel like they should choose a direction and go with it. The lighting was extremely bright for a bar atmosphere which may seem petty but lighting goes a long way to establish a mood. Overall I will be back and I am sure they will work out some of the issues as they go. Also glad to see they will be serving brunch which is something the area is really lacking in my opinion.

Best sushi in the 'burbs?

I am a big fan of Vic's sushi in Spring House. They have an all day deal of 3 rolls for $11 and the sushi is killer. They have an outpost downtown so if you are calling an order in make sure you are ordering from the right one. I have made that mistake before.

On Tap Philly in the old Finn McCools in Ambler

Thats right I forgot about that! On their facebook page they are somehow connected to the Finn McCools page and FM seems to be promoting the new restaurant. I wonder what the connection is?

Help out a Philly hound coming to your fine city

Thanks slowcooked for the great recommendations. It seems like a lot of places are doing their own cured meats in Austin. Is that something that has been a standard there or a new movement in the Austin food scene?

Help out a Philly hound coming to your fine city

Thanks for the help. I have heard great things about Franklin and if I can pull it off I will be waiting in that line. The Manuel's tip sounds like a winner.

Help out a Philly hound coming to your fine city

I will be heading to Austin in February for a long weekend and I plan to eat as much as I can while I am there. I was there one night a few years ago with a buddy's band and went to some great spots on 6th st. We are staying around the same area this time so any suggestions on food truck or restaurants in the area would be great. We are huge BBQ and mexican fans so I know we are going to be in the right place. Thanks!!!

Ralph's South Philly/ King of Prussia branch

I am very interested to hear what you think. My wife and I went there a few weeks ago to check it out and were very disappointed. I used to live right near the italian market and would go to Ralphs every once in a while for dinner.
I was never overly impressed with the meal but liked the vibe of the old school Italian decor. We figured we would give the new place a shot since we are suburbanites now and our options are limited.

Here is a breakdown of what I can remember.
We were seated very quickly and the restaurant was beautiful, huge room with very high ceilings. We were seated in the bar area since we didn't have a reservation and the server came right over with menus and a wine list. We ordered a bottle of a sangiovese which took forever to come out and when she finally came back she was not sure it was the right bottle. Luckily it was the right wine and we had our glasses filled.
Now onto the food. We started with a cheese plate that was on the pricey side, when it came out I was blown away. It was 3 pieces of cheese spread out on a large plate with a balsamic glazed drizzled over the top and a few grapes placed around the plate. In the middle of the plate was an old shriveled up strawberry. I actually thought it was a joke, it looked like something a child would put out and the cheese tasted like it was not kept properly and had a refrigerator taste.
The entrees were equally disappointing, my wife ordered a crab parpadelle dish that the waitress raved about. When it came out it looked really bad. It was watery pasta with a tomato sauce dumped on top with small pieces of crab floating around in it. They did not finish the pasta off in the sauce so there was no flavor in the pasta and it was literally watery from not being drained properly, the sauce had no flavor. My dish was a little better but still pretty bad. I ordered the braciole which looked nice on the plate but was very tough and lacked flavor. Braciole should be tender and thinly sliced and this was neither.
We turned down dessert for fear of an even bigger letdown and headed for the hills. I was really surprised at how bad it was and hope this was just an off night for them. We will not be back to find out.
