Simple Dark Chocolate Cake...no icing, no glaze

I also thought of the Hershey Bar Cake, my Mama used to make. It's a very delicious plain chocolate cake that sticks to your fingers. Also, you might try Beatty's Chocolate Cake that Ina Garten makes. I have made that one as well, but I have not served it without the icing. It is a delicious cake though. Good luck finding that cake experience again.

Best Macaroni and Cheese Recipes

Yes, there are other styles of mac and cheese, but my two sons will argue that this is the best mac and cheese recipe on the planet. I consider this a classic homemade recipe, but I won't rebuff any mac and cheese.

Creamy Macaroni & Cheese
Southern Living

1/2 c butter
1/2 c all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1/4 tsp. ground red pepper
1/4 tsp. granulated garlic
2 c half-and-half
2 c milk
4 c shredded sharp Cabot Cheddar, divided
2 c shredded extra-sharp Cabot Cheddar
1 (16-ounce) package macaroni, cooked

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Gradually whisk in flour until smooth; cook, whisking constantly, 2 minutes. Stir in salt and next 3 ingredients. Gradually whisk in half-and-half and milk, cook whisking constantly, 8 to 10 minutes or until thickened. Stir in 2 c sharp Cheddar. Stir in extra-sharp Cheddar until smooth. Remove from heat. Combine pasta and cheese mixture, and pour into a lightly greased 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining sharp Cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 to 20 minutes (bake 15 minutes longer for a crusty top).

Upscale Grocery Store Cake/Icing Recipe?

I find that butter flavor Crisco has a different texture than regular, but you might could use it. I have a friend who owns a bakery and he uses Penguin brand shortening, but I've never seen that in the grocery store. So, although I've only used Crisco, I would imagine you could try it with another brand.

Upscale Grocery Store Cake/Icing Recipe?

Oh, my Mama always added plenty of vanilla. She loved vanilla! Yes, cream everything together. She used this icing to pipe decorations and for roses for the wedding cakes as well as birthday cakes, so sometimes she needed thicker consistency and other times she just needed to frost the cake, so the consistency would be a little thinner. I make it to the point of the 1/2 c ice water. Cream completely and then taste and feel the icing for the spreading consistency that you're going to want to frost the cake. I don't know about adding cocoa powder. You might check the Wilton site to see what they say about that.

Upscale Grocery Store Cake/Icing Recipe?

If he wants the kind of icing I liked as a kid, it might be this one. It has a bit of a crispy texture after it sets. It's a take on Wilton's Cake Decorating Icing from ages ago. My Mom used to decorate wedding cakes and this is the one she used. Butter is not going to give you that texture he might be looking for as it stays creamy and soft. Hope this helps.

Decorator Icing

2 boxes powdered sugar
1/3 c Crisco
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c ice water

Box and a half sugar, Crisco, cream of tartar, salt, 1/2 c ice water. Add more sugar and ice water as needed for consistency.

Does anybody remember the name of this cookie?

The packaging is different, but that's as close as I've seen to the actual cookie. Sugar Rings sounds right. Man I loved those cookies! I was born in '63.

Does anybody remember the name of this cookie?

I loved those cookies! Our nursery school in Mississippi used to serve Windmill cookies for snack and I did not like the almond flavor. My Mama always made sure they had those sugar cookies for me to have at snack time. They are very much like the lemon cookies pictured, but no icing, just a dusting of large sugar crystals. I believe they were in pink or red packaging in a tray of 3 rows with about six cookies to a row. They were larger than the Salernos and were probably 2 1/2 or 3 inches in diameter. They might have been Sunshine brand. I haven't seen them in years.

No Rare Burgers for You!

Thanks. I knew somebody would look it up. ;) I heard or read that somewhere, It could have been a different state.

Personally, I'm picky about not only how my burger is cooked, but also from what restaurant I order it. People who aren't persnickety should be able to order a burger any way they want it as long as the restaurant has a posted warning to protect it from such individuals. But, alas that is not always a possibility as some restaurants do insist on cooking it to dry and rebuff the request of the patron. In these instances, I feel it is in my best interest to make another selection from the menu. Chances are, there is a reason they won't cook the "meat" to the desired doneness.

No Rare Burgers for You!

Along those lines, it is my understanding that the "have it your way" burger is only allowed if the beef is ground in-house. If the burger is prepared before it reaches the restaurant, they must serve it well-done. I do not have facts to back this up, but that is my understanding of the new rule. I think I must have read that somewhere at the time the law was being proposed. If the server doesn't ask how I want it cooked, I assume the burger meat is not ground in-house.

Blue Plate Mayonnaise in NC?

Big Blue Plate fan here from the Gulf Coast. Used it for the first 40 years of my life. Haven't seen it up here although a friend of ours from south of New Orleans used to have Lowe's Foods purchase a case for her every now and then. We stick with Hellman's at our house. Can't take the Duke's, it's too slick and reminds me of salve. Duke's is very popular here and I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything and I'm very glad I bought a really small jar.

How to keep plastic wrap off of cake frosting?

My Mama always used toothpicks with mini marshmallows on top. I guess the marshmallows kept the toothpicks from poking holes in the plastic wrap.

HELP! Red Beans and Rice - Kidney Beans or Red Beans??

Camellia here also. I've had other beans, but for New Orleans red beans and rice, it needs to be Camellia brand. They are the creamiest without a doubt. We have to bring them back to NC when we visit the Gulf Coast (home). We always eat our red beans on Monday. Of course, if there's leftovers, I'll eat them later in the week too.

stuffed pork chops

Hugh Carpenter has a great recipe for stuffing pork chops. Combine soft goat cheese, garlic, fresh oregano, salt, crushed red pepper flakes; stuff inside the pork chops, then slather the outside with your favorite barbecue sauce and grill. I have sometimes used sun-dried tomato feta, instead of the soft goat cheese. I have also used this stuffing for pork loin and added spinach.
