Best Chinese Food in Portland, ME???
I like China Rose, too. I really miss Hu Shang!
Lobster Recommendations from Rockland to Portland, ME
Muscongus Bay Lobster is wonderful.

Share tasting menu?
Acually, it was part of the discussion above:
"I want to challenge this line of thought, because it comes up frequently - that it's not all right to share, etc. because the restaurant needs to "sell" every seat. What if one is eating alone? Then the restaurant is not "selling" the seat across the table from you. Should they not seat you if you're dining alone? Obviously, the answer is no. So I don't think that argument is particularly valid, although many folks propound it."
Slate: Don't Buy Julia Child's MtAoFC: You Will Never Cook From It
This really says everything you need to know about Slate.
Share tasting menu?
I've never had a problem with a restaurant not wanting to serve me the tasting menu when I'm traveling alone.
Share tasting menu?
A reasonable question, but I still think it's wrong. A tasting menu, done right, is a hell of a lot of work for the kitchen, and I feel that they should get the full price intended.
Ice Cream in New Hampshire?
Very good ice cream. Get a cone, though. A request for an ice cream soda was met with a totally blank expression, as if they'd never heard of such a thing.
Losing a New England Institution - Beach Cliff Sardines to Close (moved from Boston board)
Don't know about sardines. It sounds like there are several very interested buyers, seafood processors, some local. This is a huge blow to a fairly fragile local economy.
Jordan's Snack Bar - Ellsworth -sad day
I'm very sorry to hear that. He seemed to be a really nice man. My Mom and I were just there last Friday and had wonderful crabmeat rolls and fried clams. Our thoughts are with his family and the staff!
Elements Food & Spirit in St. Johnsbury, Vermont
Overall, I would recommend it. It can be wonderful, or sometimes a bit uneven. Terrific steak frites, as I recall. Fixed price menu can be excellent. Desserts not so great. Drinks are very good.
APDC Au Pied Du Cochon, my review
As usual, I agree. I've most often ordered my whole meal from the specials, and I've never been anything less than thrilled with them. Duck in a can was fun one time, for the novelty, but that was plenty.
Poutine in Portland?
Fourth the Duckfat poutine. The gravy is terrific, the cheese excellent, and the fries very good to outrageous. Some days they are better than others, but they're always good. Allagash White alongside is pretty swell. A nap afterward can't hurt.
Raw Oysters in Maine, Early June...?
Damariscotta River Grill has great oysters, from right in the river. Even the sauces are excellent, and I don't go for sauce on my oysters so much. Lovely restaurant. King Eider Pub has GREAT drinks, but no oysters when I had lunch there recently.
White River Junctio n, VT, Hanover, Lebanon, NH
I've found Bentley's to be VERY ordinary - and wildly overpriced for indifferent "pub grub" - at best. French Onion Soup just barely OK, and not warm. How easy is that to mess up?
White River Junctio n, VT, Hanover, Lebanon, NH
I wouldn't call AJ's a fine steakhouse. I have had adequate meals there, period. Some not very adequate.
White River Junctio n, VT, Hanover, Lebanon, NH
I didn't think that Elixir was still open - is it?
Announcement: New Board Breakdown for Chowhound
Northern New England has always been ME, NH and VT. Rural in character vs suburban/urban in character.
Any chance of getting into PDC on Feb 6th? And if not....
Yes, I think that confirming the day before or the same day is sensible.
Curb Salt Use - Yay or nay?
Absolutely, and we should forbid people walking outside in the winter because they could slip on some ice and get hurt. Then again, we could take the salt that we sholdn't be using on our food and put it on our walkways, but perhaps that's politically incorrect as well.
I'm an advocate of personal choice and "common" sense.
Portland and Cape Elizabeth Recommendations
Since you'll be so close to Portland, and since I really don't know much about the Sea Glass Restaurant, perhaps you might consider going in town instead. Maybe Sea Glass is good, I just don't know - and there's so much outstanding in Portland that it would be a shame to miss.
Vermont: So you think your Grandma can cook...
I've had too many very underwhelming meals at the Wayside. Maybe 15 years ago they were better - as I recall - but lately, not so much.
Bistro Henry, Manchester, VT sucks!
This has never been my experience in many visits - I've always found it friendly and the food excellent.
Diner in Wells, ME
I just had lunch at the Maine Diner. Lobster Pie was excellent, service quick, friendly, efficient.
So, about Chowhound.
It is not mean at all. There are a FEW mean people here, I would certainly agree. You can spot them quite readily as mean, and ignore them. It's the internet. No big surprises here.
Help me understand Italian food in New Hampshire (and northern New England)...please?
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but I very much enjoy Three Tomatoes Trattoria
http://www.threetomatoestrattoria.com/home.php
Also, I've had some good meals at Sarducci's in Montpelier. Primo in Rockland can be very good, too.
Looking for a great "special occasion" restaurant in the Great Barrington area
I agree with you about both Chez Nous and John Andrews. Neither lived up to my expectations. I need to try the Old Inn on the Green.
