Glatt Kosher Catering in Philadelphia?

We had Betty the Caterer many years ago and were very satisfied. Also, I don't remember his name but he owned The Frog and The Commissary years ago is in the kosher catering business and his food is very good and also very expensive.

Eli Kulp: "People in New York just don't go to Philadelphia"

It's true, though. I'm an ex-New Yorker living year for 40 years and my New York relatives never came to my Philadelphia major family events (weddings, etc.) It's like they think there's a big hole in the Jersey Turnpike just south of Newark and they're afraid they'll fall in!

BYOB for birthday dinner - Ctr City - old standard or something new?

Bibou is wonderful -- not Center City but we almost always get a spot in the parking lot next door.

Termini's! The best in Philadelphia! We think they're even better than Ferrara's in NYC.

Sushi Omakase

Another vote for Fuji. Matt Ito and Jesse always serve a fabulous meal; we sit at the counter and order an omakase dinner and we are always surprised and pleased by what we receive. Often we specify all fish and no meat.

last minute saturday night dining options in Philadelphia

We used to love La Famiglia and have always had great service there but we do not like the current chef and menu as well as the previous one, Used to have great gnocchi with pesto that are no longer on the menu.

Taconnelli Questions

We've been there 4 or 5 times and always managed to find parking within a block or so (altho it's not easy!). Only once did we have to wait for a table. The white pizza with spinach is the best -- absolutely. We sometimes order 2 and take 1 home. We have also brought our own beer a couple of times.

Best pizzas in America (F&W)

We absolutely love Osteria's pizza. Haven't been to Pizzeria Vetri yet. We like Taconelli very much and another of our faves is Al Forno in Providence, RI (one of our kids lives there). Think their pasta is the best, as well.

Great addition to Washington Square West

WE ate there last night. The minestrone soup was very good but lukewarm in temperature. We shared a pear salad (all the salads are very large) and enjoyed it very much. But the pizza was a big letdown. It was of the fluffy variety. We had one white pizza (local veggie) which was pretty tasteless and one red pizza (Marguerita) which was better -- but both were too soft and floppy.

80th Birthday Dinner for Parents

I agree with the choices of the Fountain and Vetri -- but for the occasion I slightly lean toward the Fountain -- and I'm 81! We're going there for our 57th anniversary this week.

Need a place that is no more than a short walk from Broad and Lombard for an after theater dinner

There's a Japanese place on Spruce between Broad and 13th (don't remember the name) that could work. Also there's Effie's on Pine and just short of 12th Street -- that's only 2 blocks and it's very reasonable. In addition to Greek specials they have very nice fresh fish roasted or broiled.

3 Bells for Serpico

We had the lamb dish at our first visit to Serpico and it was delicious. It was enough for 2 because we ordered a number of other dishes. We liked most of the dishes we tried -- but our choices were limited because we don't want to eat deep fried food or sausages (too much salt).

We always try to eat at the "best" restaurants possible -- that 's how you get the best bang for your buck. Lacroix and others on that level if possible,

Any good eating near the airport?

Oregonjim -- could you recommend a couple of restaurants in NE/SE Portland easily findable after a transcontinental flight? Thanks.

Any good eating near the airport?

Philly hound coming to Portland for 1 night late July, 2 days/nights early August. Would like 1 good restaurant near the airport for July after landing, then good restaurants anywhere in Portland for lunch/dinner the other 1 days.

Last minute trip to NYC next week - lunch at Le Bernardin and dinner at Daniel

Love Le Bernardin, Daniel not quite as much ( a little too formal for us). We had a wonderful experience at Corton -- great food and wonderful service, but the staff spilled water on the table a couple of times so they took 50% off the bill! (party of 7, including 3 teenagers).

Richard Landau of Vedge on Chopped

I saw the program and enjoyed it -- we've eaten at Vedge a couple of times and also at his previous restaurant, Horizons, although we're not vegetarians or vegans. Was glad to see how well he did although I don't agree about the bees. The honey is really just a byproduct of the necessity to have bees fertilize all the fruits as well as other crops and the bees are dying because of a mysterious disease rather than mistreatment!

Yummy Sushi in Philadelphia

Zento on Chestnut Street between 2nd and Front Streets is very good and less expensive than Morimoto. We also like Fat salmon on Walnut Street betwen 7th and 8th (closer to 7th).

The Fountain (Four Seasons)

We ate at The Fountain a couple of weeks ago with the 30% Savored discount. We chose a la carte because we didn't care for the choices on the prix fixe menu -- had a wonderful meal with a glass of wine for me (DH doesn't drink) and it was a super bargain with the discount. Don't remember the prices but it was very reasonable.

Amis - dinner or brunch?

We've never had brunch at Amis but have had dinner quite a few times. We normally order 2 or 3 appetizers and 2 pastas and leave it at that. We did have a fish entree once -- but we love their apps and pastas so much (even more so at Osteria) that mostly we don't order an entree and have ice cream at home for dessert.

Saturday lunch near 95

We'll be driving from NYC to Providence in a couple of weeks on a Saturday -- would like great place for lunch not far from 95 and relatively easy to find (we can read maps).

Termini's Bakery has a stand in RTM with their great cannolis and other things and both Metropolitan Bakery and The Bus have shops there too -- all great bakeries!

Fresh Direct Has Come to Philadelphia

I've been getting their deliveries since before Christmas. My sister-in-law lives in New York and has been raving about them for years. I buy mostly fish and produce and quality has been very high. I also like their breads -- par-baked croissants and rolls. Fresh Direct saved me a lot of trips to Whole Foods when It was really really cold!

Passover dinner at Le Castagne

The menu this year is not as good. After the h-great hummous with house-baked matzoh and lambs tongues (OK but could have lived happily without them) and the salatim, there was the soup with matzoh balls which was superb -- a very good (beef?) broth with wonderful matzoh balls, there were salted codfish cakes (happily they were very small because I try to eat as little salt as possible) followed by matzoh brie with chicken livers which was OK but not great. The main course was a tiny broiled chicken half which we found dry. Dessert was a chocolate nut cake with a crema and this was very good. If he does chicken again next year, we'll eat twice at Le Castagne!

Passover desserts question

Look at the cake recipe posted for Passover on The Smitten Kitchen blog -- it's like a dacquoise with whipped cream between and on top of the cake -- looks luscious!

Passover dinner at Le Castagne

Had the Passover dinner last night at Le Castagne -- $35 for 3 courses with plenty of choices. Two slices of matzoh were served to each table, together with chicken liver pate and eggplant caponata.

Appetizer choices were Stracciatella Primaverle soup (chicken soup with peas, leeks asparagus and egg), salad with smoked trout and artichokes alla giudia. I had the soup, which was excellent, and my husband had the artichokes, which were served warm on an argugula salad. We both enjoyed our choices very much.

Main courses were chicken, dijon crusted rack of lamb, salmon, and matzoh gnocchi! We both chose the lamb, which consisted of 4 chops, mashed potato with horseradish, and asparagus. Delicious.

There were two choices for dessert -- a flourless chocolate nut cake served with chocolate sorbet and matzoh with chocolate and berries. We chose one of each and enjoyed them. The cake was delicious although the sorbet was less successful.

The $35 price was a bargain and the meal was delicious. Monday night we have reservations at Zahav.
