PDX: Cake / compressed / fresh yeast?

For years my mom has gotten hers at Beaverton Bakery. Which would mean driving in hideous downtown Beaverton, but you have the added bonus of...being at the Beaverton Bakery.

[SEA] Late Night Dinner

I'm not sure about a Friday, but the last experience we had after 9pm at the Sorrento (it was a Wednesday, IIRC) was awful. It was really quiet in there, which usually is no big deal on a weeknight -- I mean, they're a hotel bar, for pete's sake -- but the staff ignored us completely. Clearly, they were looking to close, and they literally wouldn't LOOK at us much less offer to take an order. We got the hint when they actually shut the door to the inner bar in my friend's face. And the whole time, no one said a word to us.

Palace Kitchen would be worth it just for the butterscotch pudding... ;-)

Saturday dinner on First Hill (SEA)?

I'm meeting friends this Saturday for an early dinner -- before they attend a concert at St. James (Ninth and Marion). For those without Hunt Club funding, there aren't a lot of options on First Hill...are there? I'm fairly new back to Seattle after an almost ten-year absence, so there's probably a lot I don't know. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks.

Restaurant with a view (SEA)

Can't disagree with the Palisade recommendation -- it's an absurdly gorgeous view -- but to me it always seems like prom night there. If the weather's nice, you might consider the deck at the Pink Door, up the hill from Pike Place Market. Be sure to have the tapenada to start (if you like olives).

Then again, Ray's is a Seattle institution...and if, again, you happen upon good weather, you can sit upstairs in Ray's Cafe, outside. They'll bring you a lap blanket if you get cold. I hope your husband has a wonderful birthday! Be sure to report back about where/what you chose...
