Fries with Gravy (low-brow update list)

Re: Dairy Freeze on St Clair.

I've always wondered about this place, drive by it all the time. Other than fries+gravy, anything else worthwhile?

Saturday Brunch Near the Airport, Vegetarian Friendly?

Hi all. Looking for suggestions for a vegetarian-friendly breakfast/brunch place (Saturday) within comfortable driving range of the airport.

Weekend in Cleveland

Hi all. Looking for recommendations for an upcoming weekend in Cleveland.

Any type of recommendation is welcome: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks. Any price points.

We'll be staying downtown, but will have a car.

Suggestions for Tokyo Dinner?

Where should I go for a great dinner in Tokyo? I'll be visiting for a few days, and it happens to be over my birthday, so I thought I'd go out somewhere nice.

1. I'd rather have strictly Japanese (rather than French fusion, etc.) food.
2. I don't speak or read Japanese. I don't mind not having a menu in English (I'm happy not knowing exactly what I'm eating), but I don't want to go anywhere where I'd be uncomfortable, or make the staff feel uncomfortable. Also, I need to be able to make reservations either online or by phone in English.
3. I'd like to keep dinner under 20,000Y/pp.
4. This will be mid-October, so anywhere with more than a 6-week wait-list is out.

Thanks! (Also, I'll be in Tokyo for a few days, so other suggestions welcome as well.)

ISO 3.78- to 5-litre juice/fruit drink/unsweetened tea in plastic jugs

How about the Loblaw brand fresh apple cider? It comes in a jug that's similar to a washer-fluid jug. (It also comes in a smaller, square jug, so you'll want the larger size.)

Should be available at most Loblaws & No Frills (etc.) stores. It's usually refrigerated near the produce.

My crazy shopping day yesterday - highlights

Speaking of 20 lb pork shoulders: any suggestions on where to get these reliably at a reasonable price?

I see them occasionally in my No Frills, for $1/lb or so, but not all the time. A few stand-alone butchers nearby have them all the time, but for $4-5/lb (which seems pricey for commodity pork).

Where can I get a decent-sized (preferably bone-in butt) pork shoulder for a good price, without calling ahead? Bonus points for the west end of the city.

ISO Gianduja

My understanding is that Gianduja is not hazelnut paste, but rather chocolate with a measure of hazelnut paste mixed in. I've found this is small, individually gold-foil-wrapped pieces, at the bulk place at the back (north) end of the lower level of SLM.

shiitake powder

I'm 95% sure T&T carries this.

White wine pairing for roasted marrow bones?

Any suggestions for a white (maybe even a dessert white) to pair with roasted beef marrow bones? They'll be served with toasts and a little parsley/caper/shallot salad.

Golden/Yellow Beets?

Thanks for the suggestions. Ended up getting them at Sweet Potato in the Junction.

Lindemans Framboise Lambic Beer in Toronto/GTA?

I think you have to go back at least 10 years to when VINTAGES carried beer. Maybe longer.

Lindemans Framboise Lambic Beer in Toronto/GTA?

It most certainly does not show up in VINTAGES, since VINTAGES doesn't have a beer program.

It might have shown up at some point in an LCBO seasonal release.

Golden/Yellow Beets?

Thanks. Good idea. Any suggestions closer to downtown?

Golden/Yellow Beets?

Any ideas where to get some golden/yellow beets this time of year? I'm only seeing red ones in my local stores.

Downtown-ish would be preferred.

Dim Sum near Yonge & Steeles?

Any suggestions for Dim Sum near Yonge & Steeles (say, within a 15-minute drive)?

If it makes a difference, it'll be lunchtime on a weekday.

Brew your own beer places near Toronto

I think Fermentations on the Danforth has a pretty good reputation.

You might want to ask on the homebrewing section of (local beer forum) to get some real expert opinion though.

Canadian Wine Content Only Please

Huh? Where does your information come from. I'd be very surprised if anywhere near "most" of the wineries in Ontario were making blends with imported juice.

turducken were can I buy one for X-mas in GTA

... and it certainly wouldn't be cheap.

Any coffee roasters in/near North York, Toronto?

Social Coffee Company near Leslie & 7. IMHO, the best coffee being roasted in Ontario these days.

They ship free on orders over $20 (essentially two or more 3/4lb bags). I usually get my shipments the day after they were roasted.

Thor Espresso Bar - anyone been?

One might argue that just because you stopped going, it doesn't mean that Hank's isn't a cafe.

There's also Bisogno, a few blocks in the other direction.

Thor Espresso Bar - anyone been?

Yes there is: Hank's on Church.

New to eating Sushi, whats a good place in Toronto?

Yes, but $160+tax+tip is going to be at least $200 (with a pretty bad tip) and that's before drinks.

New to eating Sushi, whats a good place in Toronto?

Kaji is going to be more than $200 for 2 people.

ISO: Kimchi near Dundas & Keele

I went looking for this place today and didn't find any Kimchi (or any other Korean stuff) in any of the places around that intersection. Anybody know more specifically which place might have the Kimchi?

Best Bites for 4 days in Toronto (including New Years)

Late December is not the best time to visit Toronto if you're after "local, in-season ingredients."

Why do people use Le Creuset? (split from Ontario board)

That's exactly why people use them.

Shirataki Noodles

Note that for diet purposes, the tofu version has significantly more calories/carbs/etc.

Shirataki Noodles

UPDATE: Was in Sanko today, they do have them.

730 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J, CA

Shirataki Noodles

T&T has them, as does P.A.T. Central Market.

I'm not 100% sure, but I assume you could get them at Sanko or J-Town as well.

ISO: Kimchi near Dundas & Keele

Any suggestions for procuring half-decent Kimchi within walking distance of Dundas & Keele? Say a 20-minute walk or so?
