My friend Babsie and I went there before the spelling bee show in June.
The only good thing is the bread w/tomatoes and cheese that they give you.
My pasta with "truffles" was totally devoid of flavor. Not just the truffles, the pasta, the sauce, etc. Not that it was "subtle" -- there was none.
Also actually one of the rudest establishments in town, if not the worst.
It is no surprise to hear they are reduced to offering buy one get one free and hopefully this signals the impending death of a crap restaurant.
P.S.: If you're not able to get street parking and have to give it to the valet it's outrageously expensive.

King Crab Legs?

The Palm will be doing a king crab special during August and September similar to their lobster special of June/July.

Sushi Zo: flawless

You may consider an unnoticeable amount of wasabi to be "just the right amount." Only on one or two fish was it even there to any extent you could find even strip-searching it, and even then the fish were, as I said, so boring and devoid of flavor that tricking it up with wasabi wasn't going to make it "sing." These were the thoughts of everyone in our party -- it was, as usual at Zo, a total case of "okay, at some point the really yummy stuff is going to come, right?" except it never does. And a dime's worth of yuzu juice doesn't change that.

Sushi Zo: flawless

I never get that awful albacore sashimi at Sasabune -- and steer my dining companions away from it too -- and I rarely get the blue crab roll although it's a decent one. As for the sushi, it's delicious and I love the rice. The last two groups I took -- within the month -- everyone said Sasabune was the best omakase they'd had. Obviously I don't agree with that but it's damn good.

P.S.: At Zo on Saturday night they had institituted a "no wasabi" rule so citing it as evidence of a "trend" toward "fresh wasabi" (unless you're talking about the infinitesimal amount he deigned to put on maybe one or two of the fish) is problematic. Also the omakase at Zo has plenty of "repeaters" as it does everywhere, even Urasawa.

Da Pasquale on Little Santa Monica

Well, they have been closed by the health board in the past. For starters.

Sushi Zo: flawless

Urasawa of course.
R-23 although the specials are better than the sushi (except the best-in-town albacore and great unagi).
Hiko by a longshot.
Sasabune by a longshot.
Kiriko by a fair piece.

Sushi Zo: flawless

We were there Saturday night for omakase. As usual, it's always better in concept than in reality. The fact is they choose the most boring and least flavorful fish for the omakase, and frankly we just kept waiting for even one thing to really wow us or dare I say even to enjoy. It felt mostly just like eating to fill up. I've given this place chance after chance and they do make a mean blue crab roll but it's certainly one of the two or three most overrated joints on this board.

Susiecakes at one year

Nope. The quote I always come back to is the friend who took one bite of a Susiecakes cupcake and looked at me and said, "I'm in the wrong business." Overpriced, mediocre-tasting.

At least they've finally filled out the display case a bit; during the first few months it reminded me of Percy Adlon's description of Jasmin from the "Bagdad Cafe" soundtrack: "There she stood, forlorn in her loden."

Mori Sushi

Mori just has never done it for me.
The sushi tastes...weird...and even when it doesn't, it just doesn't have that wow factor it should at his prices.
Add in one of the rudest staffs in town and it's no wonder that as my dad says "watch the feet" -- we're big sushi lovers aand happy to spend $$$ but we just don't go to Mori.

Good food, bad service Drago Santa Monica (very long)

Definitely complain to ownership.
The Dragos in my experience will be amenable to making it up to you and working on improving the situation. That said, there is NO excuse for this kind of treatment of a paying customer.

Dal Rae in Pico rivera

I went w/my family after reading some positive reviews on here.
The Steak Diane has no flavor whatsoever -- I wouldn't serve it to a dog.
The only yummy things are the flambe desserts: bananas flambe, cherries jubilee, etc.
Other than that it's a bust. That it has had some mentions on "top steakhouse" threads is laughable.

Where to Eat Near Hollywood Park?

Playing in a bridge tournament Sunday.
Morning session is 10:30 to probably 1:45.
Have to be back to the casino by 3:30 for the afternoon session.
Where do you recommend for a decent meal?

Thanks!

If all your meals for a month had to be at one restaurant in the LA Area, which one would you select?

My stock answer to this has always been The Grill on the Alley. You'd still have menu items left to try after a month, all of them fresh, wholesome and good tasting, in a comfortable, friendly environment where good old-fashioned customer service is a matter of pride.

It is good too but no comparison to how good Vito is.

For what it is Hide is okay.
But as my dad always says about relationships, "watch the feet" -- I haven't gone all year. As you say there are too many other really good choices in town...

Vito’s – long review w/ pics

Went in last night to try it. Picked out four slices. White cheese was the first and I was sold from the first bite. It's a perfect slice of pizza. Absolutely addictive. The Vito's w/everything on it was very good, the Mediterranean vegetable was excellent, the Garibdali w/sausage and jalapeno was my least favorite but still good. The people could NOT be any sweeter -- God willing they stay that way as they get busier. This is a definite addition to my rotation.

Kosher Italian?

I have a friend coming in from Israel next month who is used to kosher and mentioned that his favorite food is Italian. Is there such a thing as an Italian restaurant that will be OK for kosher purposes and if so what is the best one? Thanks!
