What's your LEAST favorite restaurant in LA ? (excepting of course for chains).

Pinks was very good at one time, as I recall. Something changed in the early 90's. Maybe it was me growing up, but I haven't liked it since then. I think for most people Pinks is more about nostalgia than anything else.

Don't even get me started on Home! I have no idea why folks like this place.

Totally agree with Gladstones. The food is way bland and then has the nerve to be expensive to boot.

Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

I agree 100%. Yes it is a dive. The tacos are really bad and tasteless. The cheese they put on top is horrible.

Why would a whole ethnic group be insulted by a suggestion of pumpkin pie on inauguration day?

Thanks for the report Faulkner99. I pass by this place everyday on my way home from work. I have always wondered about it. I wasn't sure if it was open or not, I never see anyone outside of the joint eating.

Vinum Populi or Vinoteque in Culver City?

I like Vinoteque, but like others have said it does get extremely loud in that place. I have never tried Bottle Rock, but it sounds like a winner. Slacker is sooo right on Vinum Populi. That was one of the worst wine bar experiences I have had to date.

I went last night, and I was stuffed. We each ordered 3-4 dishes and shared the desserts. As slacker stated the portion sizes from the a-la carte menu were not tiny.

My meal was excellent. I had the wild aspargus risotto, the cassoulet, and the kobe beef and short rib. I loved the risotto and cassoulet, and the beef was good but not amazing like the two other dishes. The dessert I enjoyed the most was the special apple tartin. That was like heaven on earth to me. I would go back just for that dessert.

I did have a chance to taste several of other dishes, and some were really good and well executed (the pea soup, omg!) and others like the veal were blah.

Overall, I had a good experience and I am likely to return one day.

La Sirena Grill - El Segundo

I tried it for lunch the other day. The salsa was interesting. However, I did not enjoy my main course. I found the carne asada enchiladas to be really bland. I am not sure if I would go back.

Please help.

I am going to cook a pot roast and would like to know, is it ok to brown the roast with the butchers twine on it? Is this an ok thing to do?

Thanksgiving is over, now what?

That looks so yummy. I think I will make this. I will head to my butcher and see what they can do for me.

Thanks so much,

Amy!

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. I think I will do beef wellington or a leg of lamb.

I will serve a party of 6 maybe 7 tops. Leg of lamb actually sounds pretty good.

Thanks!

Thanksgiving is over, now what?

I am trying to plan out my Christmas dinner menu. My family does not really eat turkey, so that is not an option. For Thanksgiving I made braised short ribs in spicy wine sauce. Any ideas on what I could do for Christmas? I would like to do a beef dish (no prime rib suggestions please).

Thanks,

Amy

Must try Restaurants in LA

If you want really good food, I highly recommend Fraiche in Culver City. It's not your typical Italian food. http://www.fraicherestaurantla.com/

I also recommend Joe's in Venice. Very good food. http://www.joesrestaurant.com/

Both places should fit within your budget.

Good eats,

Amy

Wine tasting at Primitivo

Hey all,

I was in Venice this morning and saw that there was a wine tasting happening at Primitivo on 9.19.07. I must say that my interest was piqued, it's only $28.00 and it does include tapas. My question is, is this place any good? I have heard a lot of hype about it, but I am looking for a true foodies perspective. Any one with any recommendations or jeers about this place?

Thanks,

Amy
