The Gorbals' Peter Haller: 5 Cheap Bites in Los Angeles

Cheap Eats? Not that anyone I know would recognize. What color is the sky on his planet, anyway? Twelve dollars for a sandwich, while the sandwich may be superior, it's anything but cheap. Real people can't afford that.

La Boulange

Interesting that you keep saying their servings are generous -- the La Boulangerie bakery choices at the Bux are small compared to the ones at the location on Matilda in Sunnyvale, when I used to live up there..

Best artuisan bread in Hollywood, Koreatown area?

Republique is a bit out of my price range, but thanks for the tip!

Hadn't thought to check the Farmer's Market in Hollywwod; it's hard for me to get around, so I stopped going. Sounds like a good reason to try again. I'll look for a bread stand with a line...always a good sign!

Best artuisan bread in Hollywood, Koreatown area?

I lived in Silicon Valley for a couple of years, and there was this wonderful bread, made by Acme Bread. The Whole Foods and the Farmer's Markets all carried it. The Whole Foods down here; sadly, does not,

Sooo, what's the best artisan bread in Hollywood and/or Koreatown? Le Pain Quotidien is pretty similar, but it's a pain to get to...and you must be there before 1 pm at the latest, for the freshest selection,

Basically, I'm looking for a good rustic french or rustic sourdough.

Cabot butter and cheeses in Central L.A.,?

Thanks! The butter is the hardest to find...used to be in Wild Oats, but they got bought and the new place doesn't carry it.

Cabot butter and cheeses in Central L.A.,?

Do any of you happy chowhounds know where I can find Cabot (Vermont) butter and cheeses? Lived in the Bay Area for a couple of years, and Whole Foods up there had a couple of the cheeses, but I really miss their butter. And Trader Joe's doesn't appear to carry the Cabot low fat cheddar that I've looked recently.

If not Cabot, what do you recommend?

Looking for instant espresso powder

Updating this -- the 99¢ Only Stores have a smallish jar of espresso powder, brand name, Granados, which sells for $1. I find it an acceptable substitute for the Megdalia D'Oro -- it has the same carmelly accent that the M D'O has, but for almost $3 less. Just thought I'd share...

A "Dumb Starbucks" (that's the complete name) on Hillhurst ?

the article I read at the KPCC local news online said that they are going for the 'parody art' clause, to avoid legal issues. I'm wishing them luck, but doubt it'll fly in court. Starbucks is very sue-y. ;)

COLLARD GREENS

Where can I get some smoked turkey drumsticks or thighs in the central LA/Hancock Park area? I almost never see those cuts raw in the supers, even around Thanksgiving!

Top Eats at LA Farmers’ Markets

Major oversight here...you forgot the Gastrobus food truck, and their wonderful pulled pork sandwich, and their thai spicy chicken wrap...plus their brunch items -- on Sundays at the Los Feliz Farmer's Market, by Franklin Ave and Vermont.

The Best Breads in San Francisco

Acme Bread is my yardstick for what a fresh bread should be. The whole wheat is exceptional, but all the Acme offerings are wonderful, and I miss them so much.
Los Angeles doesn't have anything that compares, and yes, that includes La Brea Bakery, unless my LA peeps are holding out on me!

No Joke: Delicious Vegan Crab Cakes

I've had some very good "faux" gras...if they can do that with vegetables, I'm willing to give it a try! The menu items look pretty good.

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

Turns out, that the ban was based on false/bad research data -- if you feed 600 times what a human would drink to little rats, I'd be surprised if they *didn't* get cancer! Even after the study was disproved, the ban continued, but it's safe to use.

That pigs in a blanket recipe was taught to us in my middle school economics class...guess they were trying to prepare all us junior cooks for the realities of managing a family kitchen, but then again, it was the late 50's.

My mother used to make these sandwiches she called "bunsteads" -- a can of tuna (then in oil, don't think packed in water went back that long ago), some cubes of cheese, chopped celery if we had some, some chopped onion, and a couple of teaspoons of pickle relish -- which she then mixed together, then stuffed in either hamburger or hot dog buns, covered with foil or a second jelly roll pan, and baked at 350F until the buns were crisp on the outside, and the cheese had melted. Loved those!!

LOL! Fried bologna -- my husband lived on that when he was in college...thought he was a gourmet chef, when he proudly showed me how he snipped the edges to keep it from curling up on the pan. Toss on a little cheese, a piece of toast to top and he was good to go. It did taste good, but makes me smile just to remember it. Miss him so much.

Where Can I Buy Irish FLAPJACKS?

Another idea -- Tesco's owns Fresh and Easy, and you said you found Golden Syrup (never had it, but my over the pond pals rave...); have you thought of asking them if they could order the Irish pancakes for you?

Where Can I Buy Irish FLAPJACKS?

Unfortunately, they probably don't taste the same, as the home made version doesn't include the preservatives, etc, that the ready-made packets do. Are the results from that recipe you linked to so awful, though? Looked good to me... :)

What's the best plain oil for popping corn?

How is it price-wise? I've seem it recommended in "How to Cook Everything" app, by Mark Bittman.

What's the best plain oil for popping corn?

Thanks everyone! I admit coconut oil scares me off, as I seem to recall it has a bit of saturated fat, and canola oil is just...no. But peanut is interesting, and I might try some better quality extra light olive oil (what I have at the moment is the Walmart brand).

I've been a popcorn addict since I learned to make it when I was 9!

What's the best plain oil for popping corn?

I'm fairly broke all the time, and I make popcorn frequently, as it's very cheap, and is good for a snack while watching my detectives... ;)

I use pure olive oil, but I'm wondering if a more flavored oil might work as well? Also, I don't use much butter to dress the corn, just a little more of the olive oil flavored with a little pepper and or salt, sometimes with added southwest spice blends. Penzey's Arizona Dreaming, enough said!

Looking for instant espresso powder

There's hope! New use, I added a tbsp to some butterscotch chip cookies. Decadent.

I feel sometimes like as soon as I discover some item, it gets discontinued! Megalomaniac, much?

I found it! It was in the coffee aisle in Ralph's, and marked as a "new" product -- and cheaper than at Target.

Thanks for the help, all. :)

Looking for instant espresso powder

I like the Medaglia D'Oro Caffè Espresso Instant powder, but can't find it anymore. I *don't* do online ordering, because I won't pay shipping. Has anyone seen this in the central Los Angeles area, in a brick and mortar store? Much appreciation in advance...

How Do You Get Rid of Fruit Flies in Your Kitchen?

Another good bait for fruit flies is a little water and leftover wine (right, like that ever happens! -- but the little monsters love it), a drop of dish washing liquid (to break the surface tension of the water/wine, to drown the flies), placed in an open beverage bottle left where you see the most flies -- in the morning, you'll just cap the bottle and toss.
Cleared a very bad situation for me (think vacation, forgotten lime on counter...) in less than 12 hours.

Taste-Testing Target's Archer Farms Foods

On the yogurt comparison, the Archer Farms offering would be best matched to the Yoplait Thick N Creamy line, wouldn't it? Yoplait's Thick N Creamy flavors come in smaller containers of 4 oz., although visually they appear to be the same as the 6 oz. size -- which has always bugged me. And the price is more comparable with the Thick N Creamy offerings. Did you choose by flavor alone, maybe? Just looking for more clarity.
