Brava in Lenox, MA

5 of us had dinner here a few nights ago. It was excellent! Small (SMALL) plates - everything well prepared and served promptly. The service was excellent. We had garlic shrimp that was served hot and was very fresh, lamb chops cooked as we requested, stuffed mushrooms, two kinds of bruschetta, fried calamari that was really quite extraordinary, arugula salad. Can't say enough good about this place - but it's a small place, and no reservations, so come early, or prepare to wait a bit. We were there on a Tuesday night and it was packed from 8pm to 10 pm. Oh but so good! Maybe they could dispense with charging $3 for a few slices of bread, however good it is...

Mezze in Williamstown, MA

We had a wonderful meal! Service was impeccable. Food was fantastic. I had pasta with sausage and beef. Also foraged chanterelles (!) Amazing! My wife had a cauliflower soup that was really delicious - subtle, creamy, and flavorful. My wife had Arctic Char that was prepared beautifully and cooked just right. The dining room is really nice - in an old house so well appointed and the light, the furnishings, all quite charming and elegant.

Marrow - New in Uptown, Oakland

I think your complaint about the meat has to do with the fact that it's grass fed beef. Typically not as fatty, but in my opinion excellent flavor.

Pizzeria Mozza or Chi Spacca

I completely agree. Just ate there last night. Bone Marrow Meat pie (mmmm) and Tomahawk Pork chop. Wow! But focaccia is really something special, light and flaky. Creamed corn was absolutely wonderful - so fresh, and really light. Roasted dates, pickled vegetables - everything was so well prepared. Service was perfect.

Marrow - New in Uptown, Oakland

This place is fantastic! I agree - I have hesitated to post anything, because I don't want to stand in line. But they deserve attention. Right now serving fresh ears of corn - grilled and the slathered with a lime aioli and cheese. Oh man! Their sandwiches (pulled pork, patty melt) are wonderful, and their burgers and fries are top notch. Milkshakes are small - but so rich - topped with real, hand whipped cream - that they are enough for two. Anyway, everything is good. Menu changes daily, posted on big torn sheets of brown paper on the wall. You can go to the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Marrow... to see what's being served.

Corazón y Miel - Bell

We were there a couple of weeks ago. It was a great meal, though maybe not worth the trip. Bell is not close to Pasadena, and traffic can be bad. Bar is great! Pelon y Beso, Salsa Verde, and El Bombero were really wonderful. The food was uneven - some of it just good, other dishes amazing. The Avocado Frito is absolutely wonderful. The steak and fried chicken were not anything special. Ceviche was fantastic. Desserts - we had them all - were good but not great. It's a wonderful place, great atmosphere, and a lot of fun. +

Latest on Ethiopian in Los Angeles

It's been a long time since I've been over to the Fairfax area for Ethiopian food. Planning to go with 6 others in a few weeks. Genet is my first choice, but we want to go for lunch and they're not open. Recent experiences and recommendations? Messob?

Monterey Restaurants

NOT. Just went there for dinner. Drinks were very good. But we ordered the 1Kg bone-in ribeye steak for two - $115. We asked that it be rare, but not blood rare, because my wife doesn't like it quite as rare as I do. The steak we received was "black and blue" , meaning it was seared on the outside but nearly uncooked inside (which I do like, but far from what we ordered). Actually cold on the inside. Then when I cut into it, the waiter agreed to take back part of it to cook a little longer for my wife. No change. Furthermore, there was about 6 to 8 oz of fat on the steak - not marble which is what prime beef as should have, just not properly trimmed. Between the fat and bone, the 1 Kg was more like 24 - 28 oz. fried onions and mashed potatoes were poor quality. For the high price this was not a good meal. Ambience is also not good.

Oakland Christmas Eve Take Out

I want to thank you (belatedly) for an amazing christmas eve feast. These tamales were so wonderful! We went over the day before, having ordered a week earlier, and just checked in. We ordered about 3 dozen tamales, including the green pork (wow! Great, and spicy!) And the sweet (pineapple-some of us loved them, others were not as enthusiastic). The family running the place was great. When we showed up at 5pm on Christmas eve he said "I have a pot full of tamales, and I don't want to take them all out. Give me a $25 deposit, and kill give you the whole pot, there are about 6 extra" We 2pm that pot full of tamales to the dinner, and feasted! Chicken, pork, beef, cheese (with jalapenos) and the other two mentioned earlier. The massa is so good, soft and light, plenty of filling. Really a treat. Thank you.

Oakland Christmas Eve Take Out

Chowhounds:
I have agreed to provide Christmas Eve dinner in Oakland for about 12 family members. So I am looking for good take out food - this is a moderately sophisticated but not picky crowd (as far as ingredients, style, etc.). Someone suggested the fried chicken at Merritt Bakery, which is open until midnight 7 days a week, including holidays! Anyone know about that place? Any other thoughts, ideas?

Dinner for 17 teachers in Chicago?

This was a terrific place and perfect for a large group. If I lived in Chicago, I think I would be a regular. The food was very good, the wine was good and reasonably priced. The environment is great - the restaurant has a very warm and casual feel. The service was excellent - the wait staff was attentive, helpful, and fast, and they helped us figure out our order. They gave our group of 18 a private space that was perfect, and the small plates menu made the whole experience celebratory and satisfying. Highly recommended. I thought the Veal Osso Bucco and the Quattro Stagioni pizza were particularly noteworthy, as was the Salumeria Tasting! All in all, a great place and very good restaurant. Thanks for the recommendation.

Dinner for 17 teachers in Chicago?

I am looking for a restaurant for a Wednesday night dinner for 17 teachers. We have one vegan in the crowd, and all are enthusiastic diners! Cafe 28 says they could accomodate us. Good idea? Other suggestions?

Santa Barbara/Montecito Dinner for 18

I'm looking for a restaurant with a private room for 18 in the Santa Barbara/Motecito area. For many years we have gone to Bouchon, which we love. This year we didn't get our reservation in soon enough, and their Cork Room is booked. So now I am adrift, looking for a very nice restaurant that could accomodate us. I am looking at the Wine Cask and Seagrass, on Bouchon's recommendation. Also at Olio e Limone. Any thoughts?

Cambria california

We were in Cambria for New Year's Eve, and ended up at Robin's for a 9:15 reservation - just enough time for a lovely, romantic dinner and a walk on the beach to ring in the new year. Robin's was very, very good. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was really wonderful, and the food was very good: eclectic, with Indian and other Asian influences. Fresh local produce and fish, a good steak, the duck was excellent, and cooked just right. They have a good wine list, lots of local wineries, and a number of "splits" or half bottles, which is nice for a couple.
