April Dinner for 10 on Coronado Island in San Diego

Taco Tuesday at Costa Azul. They have a guy out on the sidewalk 'hawkin'.

48 hours in san diego/baja - what's your dream itinerary?

Border crossing, estimated time for vehicles and pedestrians. Call 619-690-8999. Updated every hour. You can get a good idea of the wait times and when its optimal to cross. I like to go to Puerto Nuevo and stuff myself with LOB. #1's is the first place on the left.

Coronado Eats?

The Prado in Balboa Park is very convenient but just okay. Candelas in Coronado for happy hour. Something about those appetizers being half price that make them edible. The fish taco at the Brigantine is a island favorite. $2.50 on Taco Tuesday..............and its outstanding. Primavera used to be the spot for Italian but since the Kiwi waiter (John) left its lost some of its allure. I recently tried Danny's Palm burger and its on par with the Burger Lounge. Still have not made it down to Nicky Rottens for their burger. Chez Loma closed. Leroy's is upscale along the Hillcrest gastropub vein and they do have the Arrogant Bastard on tap and is open later than usual. I'd much rather go to Top of the Market on the embarcadero before I went to 1500 Ocean or Minstral.

San Diego Vacation - Where To Eat?

I've died several times doing that drive out to Stone. Better to go to Leroy's Lounge in Coronado and get an Arrogant Bastard and some decent pub grub.

Best Mexican in Hillcrest or Anywhere

Finally made it to Super Cocina. I wish someone had told me to take a real fork because 'working through' the chile relleno was a joke with the plastic. The Chile Colorado on the other hand was so damn good I practically forgot about my rellano adventure.

Romesco's vs Urban Solace for noise level

I went about a month ago on a wednesday with a loud group. My friends wife has a nice system where she makes sure he has a hanky to suck on when he starts laughing too loud. We had a nice Nebbiolo that carried the evening.

Holiday Tamales

I had a dozen chicken tamales from Ancira on Main St. Chula Vista last month and was disappointed. Without some good fresh salsa they would have been borderline inedible. I was really surprised since all they do is tamales.

So what do we think of the 2011 UT Dinning Guide?

I kept hearing about Urban Solace. I went yesterday for lunch. I was eager to read the UT this morning and see how it rated but, alas, I guess its not the trendy 'in-place' anymore. I had the Duckaroni. The first bite was spectacular but I got the feeling (like I get whenever I have beef bourguignon or coq au vin) that it was so rich I wouldn't be able to sustain an active interest. Nice to pass out portions to your friends but a lot to handle for the person who orders it. Mom had the watermelon salad.

Don't be scared to step it up. He's paying. The Boathouse across from the Del could be the perfect spot for an early dinner before strolling across the street to the Del. Other options besides Miguels and Il Fornaio, are Vigalucci's, The Brigantine, Costa Azul, or even, (don't say it) Peohe's. For guests from the east coast, I think you should lean toward the Mexican.

I found the Barona Buffet acceptable. The oysters and dim sum made me happy.

A Night Out in Coronado?

Surprised there are no mentions for Primavera. No view but superior food. Leroy's seemingly got off to a slow start but reports are streaming in that lean toward the positive. One of my guests said it was the best pork chop he ever had. Il Fornaio seems to be getting passing grades again. Peohe's is still under the gun and lumped into the boathouse, brig, chez, costa, rhino conundrum.

San Diego Restaurant Week

We use RW to go to restaurants we wouldn't usually go to. The thought of going to Ruth Chris doesn't usually strike my fancy but during RW its quite the deal. Pretty hard to screw up a wedge salad, a prime steak, and a triple chocolate cake. More than acceptable for $40.

National City Chula Vista - Vast foodie wasteland?

I had to meet friends for dinner at ChinaChina off East H/805. We met at 7 pm and to my surprise the place totally filled up by 9:00 on a Tuesday night. The food was edible but not anything special. You could also order sushi from the Japanese/noodle restraunt next door. It just felt strange for that place to fill up. Maybe there isn't much in the south bay. I'm not sure why Hanaoke doesn't get more mentions. Solid Japanese. Once Aqui es Texcoco's consumme gets in your veins......look out, and Mariscos Godoy's octopus cocktail is head shaking.

Imperial Beach -- near bike path

Jalisco's Cafe opens at 7am. Mexican food at its best. Machaca Especial is my favorite. Meijo will be better than you expect. The hot food is plentiful. If you're hungry get the combo A. Chicken Terikayi and a cali roll with all the fixin's for $11.95. I find if you stick with the hamachi, maguro, and eel you can't go wrong on the sushi end. The more explorative choices may not be as fresh. There is a little Thai place on Seacoast that semi-delivers, Aroma-Thai.
Food is fresh and edible. The Tin Fish at the end of the pier is still a solid choice but you have to pay a bit more for the location. The Fish and Chips is spot on and the fish tacos cannot be ignored. Agree the donuts at Stardust can be mouthwatering but have your order ready. The boys have a bit of 'Soup-Nazi' in 'em. But if you have any sense continue on to Chula Vista and Palomar street to Mariscos Godoy. Plenty of postings on Chow. I went yesterday and was again 'lifted' into sobriety.

Three memorable dinners recommendations?

Whew.........logistics can certainly add or take away from a dining experience. Primavera in Coronado is the best food. Candelas best happy hour. Tartine, Rhinocerous, and Tent City for the bird eaters. Swadee Thai gets a mention along with the bar staff and fish tacos at the Brig. Head down to Imperial Beach for a mexican breakfast at Jalisco's and rub shoulders with the locals just so you can say, "I was in America's most southwesterly city."

lamb bbq Aqui es Texcoco

I've been hearing a lot about this place so I finally went in for taste. I got a order of lamb with corn tortillas, cilantro/onion, guacamole con nopales, and a consumme of borrego that just kinda knocks your socks off. Red and green chile. It kinda reminded me of Carnitas Uruapan except it was lamb. But the difference maker is the consumme. I'd spoon it into the taco before each bite. Nice. Fast service. Ultra clean. $9-10 for a full order. With four people get a kilo for $34.

Cheese Plate...where's the love?

I used to really (no really) like the Rembrandt gouda that is sold at Costco. But like a lot of items it appears the quality has fallen off. I still buy it out of habit.

Anyone else getting rushed out of Blind Lady Alehouse?

I was at Parkhouse Eatery the other day with mom. We're having a nice lunch and one of the bus boys comes over and takes my empty plate. I see my mom bristle a bit and I ask her what is up. She is like, "I hate it when they do that,.....its their way of hurrying things up." I told her I totally disagreed. I want my empty plate out of my way so I can relax. I guess perception is everything.
