Central Islip dinner advice

La Famiglia in Smithtown is very nice and family style. You can share entrees and only order 4 or 5 entrees for 6 people. A group of 6 would be ideal for that.

Branchinelli's also has very good food. You should enjoy that.

The $20 per entree limits you mostly to pizza places with a dining room. Emilio's in Commack is very good.

If you wanted to go slightly higher, Cafe La Strada on Rt 111, just about 2 blocks south of the LI Expressway (Rt 495) is excellent.

Premium prices at Ben's Deli in Scarsdale

My favorite Kosher Deli is Ben's in Forest Hills. It is not associated with the chain known as Ben's, owned by Ronnie Dragoon. The pastrami is tender and tasty. Too bad it is too far from home for a quick sandwich.

lunch on a SAturday near Tanger outlets in Deer Park

I like Miller's Ale House. It is right by the entrance to Tanger. Good food at good prices.

Snowflake's Riverhead annual Polish Festival Blackberry Brandy Ice Cream...get it while you can!

`I had a cup of it and it was excellent. We hit Snowflake without knowledge it was being sold, but glad we did.

Syracuse suggestions

Coleman's for good Irish food. Scotch and Sirloin for steaks, Kitty Hoynes for pub grub, Lemongrass for Thai, Arad Evans for high end American food. I used to like Danzer's for German food, but they may be closed. I also like Delmonico's for low cost steaks and Italian food. For fancier continental food there is Pascale's.

If you want to go to the Dinosaur, get there at 11:30 AM as it gets crowded after that.

Breakfast near Hilton Garden Inn East Syracuse

My favorite is the (All Night) Egg Plant. It is at 5781 Bridge St #36, East Syracuse, NY 13057. Enter from the parking lot in the back. Their food is terrific.

PeraBell in Riverhead - Very good

When we were there the noise level was VERY LOUD.

I ordered the burger and it was OK. I ordered home fries to go with it, because the menu made no mention that it came with fries. They delivered it with the fries plus the order of home fries. When I wanted to send back the home fries the waitress said to keep it and they won't charge me. It was her mistake and she made good on it.

The room is a long tunnel-like room with hard walls and ceiling and sound reverberates off these and it makes it difficult to converse. They also play music which added to the noise level. This is the same problem that Joe's Garage has. I do not know why they believe that you have to bombard your senses with noise to make a restaurant/bar seem good.

I personally did not care for their menu. I preferred Cody's.

Partos Pizza in Riverhead gets bought out by Uncle Joes

Their food is not great.

Service is poor.

I saw a waitress rub a busboy's hair with her hands and then serve food to a table.

Maybe if we are lucky they will be bought out by Michelangelo's.

Looking for recs near Stony Brook University

I like "Green Tea", a very Chinese restaurant, just west of the LIRR parking lot on 25A. Their food is fantastic. There is also another very Chinese restaurant just west of their whose name is their street number. They are set back slightly, so you have to look carefully to find it.

Asia Taste in Hauppauge, a real winner!

Looking forward to trying it since it is only a half a mile north of where I live. Coll, thanks for the review.

Roxbury, NY! Woodstock too

I really like Joshua's. Their soups, salads, wraps, breakfasts, etc. I also like the fresh juiced carrot juice.

They are on Tinker (Main) Street and Pine Grove Street in Woodstock, right on the side of Tannery Brook.

I like the "Egg Plant" near Bridge Street just off Erie Blvd.

Ben's pastrami

There are very few other choices on LI. In Suffolk we have Xan's and Pastrami and Friends. Nothing to recommend except there is a restaurant in Forest Hills/Rego Park on Queens Blvd called Ben's (no relation to the chain of Ben's restaurants) that does have thinly sliced hot pastrami that is excellent. Bring your own parking space, as it is difficult to park there.

Mother's day brunch in Great Neck, LI area

I like Colbeh in Great Neck. It is really good Persian food, heavy on the vegetables. Really excellent tasting food. It is Kosher.

Traditional in Nassau

Gastronomos, sounds like you are looking for ethnic rather than traditional. If you want traditional, that brings to mind the Millerage Inn in Jericho, that has be doing traditional food for a few hundred years. If you are looking for ethnic, there are a lot of new Chinese restaurants opening up now that cater to the Chinese population here. Their food is excellent, but you will not find chicken chow mein on their menu. In Mineola there is a selection of excellent Portuguese food. When you see the word Churrascaria, get set for some good meat. German food is getting rarer and rarer. There is Koenig's in Floral Park, the Plattdeutche Park in Franklin Square, Pumpernickels in Northport and not too many others anymore. There are lots of Turkish places opening up with food similar to Greek. These are all considered 'ethnic' whereas a barbecue place may be considered traditional, at least in the US.

Rabbit Meat in the Holbrook Long Island area

If you want the rabbit meat prepared, Empire Chinese restaurant in St James has rabbit specialties sometimes.

~Fred19

Cracker Barrel on Long Island

Why would anyone want to petition our politicians to open up an extremely mediocre restaurant? We would be better off with more Denny's, which is slightly better than mediocre.

The reason that we do not see Cracker Barrel on LI is the same as why we do not have any Wegmans here. The cost of a large piece of real estate close to major thoroughfares is prohibitive for those types of operations and still maintain their competitive price point.

Road trip from New York to Montreal tonight...where to stop along the way?

I like Hickory Barbecue just off Exit 19, Kingston. It is a short ride west on Route 28.

Taking a day trip from NYC and looking for a unique or noteworthy lunch spot in the lower Hudson valley area.

Try the Raccoon Saloon. Good food, good atmosphere and good prices. They are on Route 9W a short distance north of the Newburgh/Beacon bridge, south of the Poughkeepsie bridge in Marlboro, NY.There is a menu on their website.

Two days in Finger Lakes in July 2015

When we are in the Finger Lakes, we enjoy lunch at Parker's Grill & Tap House. Good food, ambiance and prices. They have locations in Seneca Falls, Auburn, Geneva and Newark, NY.

We ate there a few times this last year and it is worth recommending.

Premium prices at Ben's Deli in Scarsdale

Be happy that you have a Ben's in Scarsdale. In Suffolk County, LI, we have Zan's. It seems that they lost their good cole slaw recipe.

The Orient Bethpage

Thanks dixdiner! $10 corkage is not bad.

A restaurant/caterer in the Farmingale (Long Island) that could accommodate a party of 20 or 30?

Try Tre Scalini in Farmingdale. One of my clients invited me to a holiday party there. The food was very good and from what I gather, so was pricing. We had a choice of 3 or 4 fixed dinners. The place is in the village of Farmingdale and it is on Main Street.

O'Mally's Southold Sold - How's it Now?

Motorsport, thanks for the info about Parto's. The restaurant is convenient, but as long as they use the same chef, I will not be going there. I particularly dislike the taste of the food. Nothing is too wrong with the menu or ambiance, as long as it does not get too hot in the summer in there.

Coll, I am looking forward to your review when the weather gets decent again.

~Fred19

O'Mally's Southold Sold - How's it Now?

Coll,

Has Parto's changed since they sold it?

I won't be eating in Riverhead until boating season begins.

~Fred19

Hy Ting -Riverhedad, NY - Classic Chinese American Chow

Went to Hy Ting with two other couples. There were two tables occupied and the waiter said to us that he could not take our order for a half hour. He said there was lots of takeout that he was working on. Maybe he was acting as the chef also? It was a place we really like and I feel that there is now one less place to go to in the Riverhead area. The North Fork is loaded with too many high priced restaurants opened by an executive chef who designs a fancy menu and then is gone, leaving behind a dysfunctional restaurant with poor service and exorbitant pricing.

~Fred19

The Orient Bethpage

I have been going to the Orient for about 20 years and it is really good. Too bad that you cannot get reservations. My favorite is the roast pork with fried noodles, dry.

It was great in the old days where you could bring your own bottle of wine or liquor. Now they have alcoholic beverage service and you can get a bottle of Tsingtao if you want one.
