If I say Chez L'Ami Jean, you say....

hello, Can you tell us a little of your experience at CAJ? Long wanted to eat there bc I keep rereading it is different but what does this actually mean? Not sure if it is what I am after for a special meal? How exe is it in reality? Did you find it hard to book? would you say it is casual or more formal?
Is the food experimental or traditional. Could read reviews but keen to get a 'real' take.
Any other thoughts for a special night but cost consideration as well,
Thanks so much

7 days in Paris. What do you think?

Hi John, Have been following you for years ( Lagrume 2010!) and all your recs have been superb. Now I need a practical solution. Arriving late into Rue Cherche midi and want to eat at le Cherche midi as soon as arrive at 8pm. Trying to book by phone and having trouble from Australia getting my meaning across. They actually hang up when I ask if they speak English. I know this restaurant well and want to eat there. How do I book in advance, no email address?
Also John, can you name one bookable restaurant for average price but great food on left bank preferably st germain area which I could book for special occasion. I have a list on my phone of John's restaurants!
thanks for all your help in anticipation

John I need your help. Three years ago in Paris I discovered your wit and expertise, you sent me to a little restaurant l'agrume and we loved it. Then one night we needed close to ile St. Louis and you recommended le reminet... Perfect. Now we are back, cannot afford much above 70-100 euro for two. Don't drink alchohol (yes I know shame all that lovely cheap but good wine) and now staying on rue cherche midi. Was thinking le comptoir for special and also need three other lunch or dinner cheaper but in spirit of l'agrume. Can you help please? Happy to travel a little bit but prefer left bank for evening and perhaps wider afield during day. I would be very grateful, thanks in anticipation.

Planning Vienna trip... Narrowing choices

Sturmi would love to know what you think of authentic old places like cafe korb.? We were recommended to this place by Viennese residents as a place Viennese eat, not really for tourists. Honestly the best goulash ever tasted. Also a quirky family run restaurant, the cuckoo restaurant. Surprised that they have not popped up on the chat ...

JERUSALEM

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply. Have left Jerusalem but felt you should know that we got to Machane Yehuda Market and loved every minute. We ate at the fabulous Azure restaurant which surely has to go down as most bizarre restaurant setting amongst the cabbage leaves and the toilet block just next door. Food best we had in Jerusalem. Bought lots of the bakery goodies and just soaked up the atmosphere.
Thanks again,

Paris Ile Saint Louis - Need help finding a restaurant

Hi John,
Just had to tell you that we dined at Reminet last night after a mega day of shopping and it was the absolute perfect end to a very good day. The owner and his young waiter could not have been more charming and the food felt loved and had an authentic feel to it. Heading out now to l'agrume, they are not answering the phone so fingers crossed. Thanks for the tip

Jerusalem Must Eats

Hi Everyone,
Just arrived tonight and looking forward to starting our culinary adventure tomorrow. Complete and utter novices. Staying in private apartment walking distance to the ? mall and the old city which I believe is a great location. Need restaurants hopefully in walking distance, mid range happy to try non touristy authentic places which might specialise in whatever the specialties may be. Hear that we must try falafel, and hommus and shwarma but not quite sure what all these may be. ANY SUGGESTION WOULD BE GREAT!

In anticipation,

Christmas in Berlin

NYE report. Well, we got a little caught out by not pre-planning. Ended up walking around Prenzlauer Berg and hoping for an off chance table. Tried Restauration 1900, Gugelhof, Pasternak (all full) and finally when Pizza was looking the go managed to get a table at Mao Thai. It was your standard accomplished Thai, nothing really special but fine. Lesson learned. Tonight we went to Restauration 1900 and it was terrific. My goats cheese salad with couscous and mixed green was a work of art, husband's pigs cheek with pumpkin dumplings, crushed peas and tiny onions was wonderful. So that is us done and dusted for Berlin. Off to Jerusalem tomorrow. Any tips greatly appreciated. Linguafood you have been a legend. Thank you. Oh! Yes. Lunch was at 'November' Husemannstr and that is just the sort of cafe we love, good food, great atmosphere and time to linger.

Me again ! And a little desperate now as we have left booking anywhere for tonight till last minute and have tried Blaues Band ( shut) Restauration 1900 ( full) and Renger Patzsch ( not answering phone). Really favour authentic good German food and happy to travel anywhere with U bahn access and short taxi ride. Hope you get this soon and can help,

Christmas in Berlin

Ok nightly report ...tried Si An tonight, fantastic especially after a serious calorie lapse at lunchtime at a cute little patisserie called Albrecht in Rykestr, Yummy cakes and nice homey feel. Please tell me its not a chain as it felt 'loved' by someone.

Now linguafood here is a test for you ...where to eat for the big NY? Know we have left it late and so fine dining probably out because hav'nt booked but then we tend to love mid range but interesting just as much. We were thinking German after a few nights of Asian inspired. What about your suggestion of Restauration 1900 or Blaues Band? Open to any or all suggestions. Love to know name of local Doner as again not really familiar with this type of food. Yes yes! I know we come from Melbourne which is the food capitol of Australia but there you go. Thanks for sandwich tip, will be on the look out. Thought we would head to Ka De We tomorrow to oggle their food hall.

Fantastic!!! You are our guru, thanks so much linguafood, lots to try here. Actually dont laugh but you know what we really crave, a simple great sandwich. Made freshly, terrific bread and interesting fillings. I know we seem like we are not venturing far but the truth is after a long day seeing the sights, its dark and cold and all we want to do is drop into a local on the way home for some interesting fare before we collapse. Tried Yam Yam last night, never had Korean before ...converts! Many thanks again. Will report back.

Hi linguafood, if you are online now that would be great as we are just heading out and realise that the one thing we need each day are terrific lunch places. Love the whole kaffeehauser culture in Vienna where a good soup reigns supreme! Could you suggest mid range places with food cooked well and if some ambience thrown in that would be great. Staying on Marionburgerstrasse so walking distance would help but not essential.

Christmas in Berlin

Thanks linguafood for being a fabulous resource for visitors to Berlin. As we have just come from Vienna and had our fair share of superb Viennese cuisine. Probably looking for slightly lighter but main deal is that the food is fresh and cooked well so happy to consider all you have to offer. Last night we tried Monsieur Vuong and it was 'just what the doctor ordered"! so fresh and perfect. We are staying on Marionburger strasse. Thanks again for your generous time,

Planning Vienna trip... Narrowing choices

Just left Vienna and couldnt help but comment on your comment here that Meinl am Graben has gone out of business. Are you talking about the restaurant, surely not the supermarket which has to be right up there as one of the best in the world. Also while I have you all, Cafe Sperl a long time family favourite disappointed with its goulash. I also ordered a simple ham sandwich and had to leave it uneaten so dry and processed did it taste. Cakes however remain supreme. Maybe I just ordered badly. Another tip would have to the wonderful Cafe Korb, bect goulash tasted thus far.

Christmas in Berlin

New to posting and not sure this is the correct method, so fingers crossed that you just jump in when you think relevant. I jumped in here because we have just arrived in Berlin for 6 nights specifically in Prenzlauer berg which at first glance seems like a great choice. Any suggestions as to mid price restaurants in this area would be much apprciated.

Ps if this is not the correct way to post can someone tell me how...sorry to be a dummy!
