Memorial Day lunch/dinner in Rockport area?
My wife and I headed up to Rockport tomorrow morning... the plan is to arrive at the beach to watch the sun rise and enjoy a picnic breakfast, swim before the crowds show up, then hang out until we're hungry again. What's a great spot for late lunch or early dinner in that part of Mass that might not be mobbed on Memorial Day? Seafood would be awesome, but we're open to any place that Chowfolks think we shouldn't miss.
Thanks!

Belgian Waffles in Boston?
Thanks for th' tips, ev'ryone. This whole exchange makes me wish that our city had some "street food" culture... like waffles...
Anyway, I'll anxiously await Saus' debut.
Belgian Waffles in Boston?
Saus looks great!!! Aw man, why can't they be open tonight?
(btw... "nsenada", as in the Residents? NIce!)
Belgian Waffles in Boston?
I just returned from my honeymoon, which took us to Belgium for a few wonderful days. Ever since we returned to Boston, we've sorely missed those waffles you get on the streets in carts, or in the train stations... boy, do I crave a real Belgian-style waffle. This may be wishful thinking, but is there anywhere in the Boston area (other than a beer festival) where one can get one? Or several?
Thanks!
Sam Adams Utopia?
I've seen it for sale at Supreme Liquor in Central Square, on Mass Ave.

a crab dinner?
Hi folks - my SO and I have recently been craving a Baltimore-style crab dinner... nothing fancy, just a huge pile of crabs steamed in Old Bay, served in a comfortable place that serves beer. Does this exist in Boston? Any reccs would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
(fyi, Summer Shack isn't quite what I'm looking for... it's maybe more upscale than we desire for a meal like this)
shabu-zen... chemical taste?
This might be a weird question... both times that I ate at Shabu-zen in Chinatown, my soup had a distinct chemical taste to it. Not in every spoonful, but in most, an astringent aftertaste. I wonder, could it be from a spice that I'm not used to? Does anyone know what I mean?
East Coast Grill... so disappointing.
i'm gonna be one of the pro-ECG folks. In fact, as I think about it, I've not had a bad meal there... I've loved the fish, I've loved the BBQ, I've loved the "hell bone" (which is no joke, holy moly), the service has always been fine for me. I've had dates, casual dinners w pals, take-the-family-out meals, even dined alone there a couple of times... all have been just fine. But the best thing I've had there, amazingly, was the grilled veggie plate! I went with a vegetarian friend, and the platter he was served was terrific.
My minor complaints: the beer selection could use some improvement, especially since they serve BBQ. And yeah, the cocktails aren't very good. But hell, I'm a former Southerner, so I tend to order iced tea with my ribs, and they sure do that just fine.
Red Fez - please help
I am obligated to go to The Red Fez soon. Of course, I've read everybody's complaints about the place's downward slide, so let me ask: if you had to go there (no getting out of it), what dish is still worth trying? What's the best possible Red Fez meal now?
Thanks!
Reasonable Cambridge dining
i have to second both Mucequa and The Garden @ The Cellar... though the fomer is traditional Brazilian stews (don't miss the fried chicken app!!), and the latter is what I would call "inspired" for sure. The Cellar is, in my opinion, an extremely exciting spot, I've been happy with everything I've tried there... and it can be cheap! Sides are $3 to $5, and a meal can be made of 3 of them. The fries are the best in the city (yep, that's right... the best), and the pizzas are heavenly. If you want to spend in the $20 range, you can do that there too... the steak frites is wonderful.
Publick House
Was just here last night... De Dolles Oerbier on draft!! Amazing. I also tried a Belgian beer flavored w mustard greens, but don't recall the name of the brewer. I had a large order of the pumpkin ravioli, which were delicious but gooey in a sea of cheese... i could have done with less cheese, so that i could taste the ravioli better... but hey, i'm nitpicking.
name this noodle place...
There's a Japanese (?) noodle spot that i've walked past dozens of times, but can't think of what's it's called and have never eaten there. It's on a small side street between Newbury St and Boylston, close to the Hynes Convention Center. Anyone know what the place is, and if it's any good? I'm meeting a friend for dinner tonight in that area, and will go to this place if it's worth trying. It appears to be a tiny, casual restaurant.
Sorry for the vagueness of my request here... hope y'all know what i'm talking about.
BOB THE CHEIF - RIP
as a former Southerner who loves, even craves, fried chicken and soul food, i must say that i've never been impressed by Bob's in the 9 years that i've lived in Boston, and haven't even been there in ages. It's always seemed to be a shadow of what it aspired to be. It's sad to see any independent business close, but really... there must be many more who share my opinion, or else it would have stayed open.
Oishii- best dish recommendations
i like nearly all of the rolls i've tried, but you can't miss the one with black truffles on it.
Simple but delicious places for anti-fancy mom?
for kickass italian seafood, Pescatore in Ball Square (Somerville) is both unpretentious and excellent.
Boston food for someone in Los Angeles
Woodman's Clams ships... this might be more general New England than specificaly Bostonian, but what the hell. It's Boston enough for me:

Which is the best Indian spot in Central Square?
as a central square resident, i can say that whenever i want indian food, i go to Royal Bengal. the buffet is very good, especially on weekends when they add goat and fish to the available dishes. if you go at night, i'd advise ordering exclusively off the Bengal menu, which is a seperate couple of pages from the rest of the menu... they do these dishes much better. But they also excel at fish. Try the fish pakora for sure... the breading they use is something I crave. It may be made with egg...?
Myers & Chang
i enjoyed this... the shrimp and lemon dumplings were so tasty that i immediately ordered a 2nd plate, before i finished the 1st. i enjoyed the pork buns, though the way they do them (with the bun open on one side) is a bit difficult to eat... not that i let it stop me. i had the dan dan noodles, which were spicy enough, and i was surprised at how full i was after that. to drink, i had the Hitachino Red Nest Ale, maybe the best variety of beer by the only good Asian brewery. Glad this is finally imported to Boston.. I grew tired of my NY friends rubbing it in my face that they got it first.
I ended up spending $40 somehow... more than I'd anticipated, but I didn't think the environment was too loud. In fact, I'm excited to return and try more of the menu. Sure, it's not Chinatown (my favorite place to explore food in the city), but I liked it. Going with a large-ish group helped.
Vegan in Boston
i asked about this very topic several weeks ago... Grasshopper and Buddah's Delight are, to my tastes, not very good. A fine suggestion made here was Oleana, which offers vegan dishes... but, as I learned when I called them, does not do the five-course vegeatarian tasting menu as vegan. OM was also suggested for high-end vegan fare, but is yet untried by me. Veggie Planet, in Harvard Square (in the same space as Club Passim), offers decent vegan breakfast and some pizzas and stir-fry.. essentially what a vegan might make at home if they're feeling somewhat unambitious, but with good quality ingredients and a college rec room vibe.
Great to know that Shabu-Zen has vegan soup!
JP Scene: My 2 cents so far....
i lived in JP for awhile, and truly miss some of the food.. I'll second the recc for Miami. But my hands-down favorite spot for food in JP is Yeli's Coffee Shop. Those hacked ribs with lime and yucca, maybe some sausage... aw man, it's the best. And you get something like 3 meals worth of food for $5. No menu, you just point at things or (if you know Spanish) ask for some of whatever you see behind the counter. No frills, no ambience, no coffee... it smells like heaven and could send you quickly to the afterlife if you overdo it.
Beijing Tokyo coming to Kendall Sq/ Main St
i think that's also the name of the spot that opening in Davis, where the Chinese fast-food joint used to be, across from the Somerville Theater.
East Coast Grill last Friday
I was also here recently, and had the wolf fish... it was terrific, I hope it's served here more often. For those who aren't familiar with the fish, it's often served in Korean hot pots.
I also had the scallops, but thought more highly of them than you did. Of course, I couldn't help but compare them to the whole-scallop app at Peach Farm, which is far superior... but I also thought ECG's was tasty enough for a quick pre-dinner salty blast.
One thing I had here that knocked me down was the "Hell Bone"... a single spicy rib, slathered in Inner Beauty hot sauce, offered as an appetizer. Aw man... I'm a fan of hot things, but this was nearly too much, even for me. I finished it purely due to mockery by my DC. For future DCs: the best way to get me to do something is to tell me that you don't think I'm able to. I'm sure there's a psychological term for that, but I don't want to know what it is. Anyway, the "Hell Bone" happened to taste great, despite its... er, malevolence. The spices were bright and fruity, the meat tender underneath. It almost crossed my mind to order a 2nd one, just to spite my DC, but... well, I still had fish coming.
Hemi semi demi mercy at Neptune
to clarify... i read the bit about how the price changes, but i'm curious as what THIS particular one cost.
Hemi semi demi mercy at Neptune
This sounds amazing! So, what was the cost per person for this meal?
Jamesgate bummer
i remember a couple/few years ago, the bar side food at James' Gate was very good... but then I heard (someone confirm or deny?) that they changed chef. The menu certainly changed, and the food became... less special, somehow. That's when I started going to Costello's instead, even though the atmosphere is totally different and the beer taps seemed perpetually dirty.
Neptune First Impression- strange sauces, no bread
how insane is this place on friday nights? my brother is visiting, and this post got me in the mood for oysters. if we get there at 9pm, is it usually mobbed?
Quebec trip in September
i recently had one of the very best meals of my life (no joke!) in Montreal at Cocagne on St Denis. I went on a recommendation, and was blown away. I live in New England, but had the best oysters at Cocagne. They specialize in local ingredients, and do a kickass cheese assortment.. the Blue Star cheese was astounding. It's a pricey place, but not too bad. For me, two people plus wine, apps and cheese cost $300.
Jamaican Jerk
Boy do i miss Rythym and Spice in Central... now the Middlesex Lounge. Sigh.
However, I recall having good, authentic-ish jerk at Ali's Roti Wrap..... but it was a long time ago, and I could be mistaken.
Wanted: trendy yummy fun and flirty...
Cuchi Cuchi is a very good recommendation... so I'll second it! Drinks really are expensive, but they're excellent. The food is tapas-style. Also expensive, but also excellent. The atmosphere, though, is the star... definitely good for a fun, romantic night out with yr sig oth.
Plus, you can move to Toscanini's for sundaes afterward! But maybe that's just MY idea of a date night.... ;)
Anise (in Kendall Square)
Last time I went to Anise, in Kendall Square, I thougth the food was excellent... unfortunately, I was one of only two peopl in the place on a Thursday night. The bartender mentioned that business had been slow, and he left soon after. But I just read a positive review of the place in the Improper Bostonian, so I'm hoping that word of mouth spreads and the place sticks around. Has anyone been there lately? If so, have you have a good experience? Was anybody eating there? I really enjoy thier tasting menu... 5 apps for $25, I think? Something reasonable like that.
