Good, cheap eats near Univ ?

I like Song Han much more than Saigon Star, in terms of freshness and quality and value... Song Han is located in Kensington.

I also like Vendome (Kensington) for the duck panini, salads and soups.

Onigri in YYC

The onigiri company looks great. I've lived in Calgary for a few years now and haven't come across it yet... hopefully someone will bring a onigiri food truck into the Calgary food scene.

Temaki cones are pretty similar - I like Sushi Club - good blend of flavours and texture.

Inexpensive venue for a Christmas party

Thanks for the tips! I am in Calgary, but I think there is a Schanks. I will check it out. We went to the Danish Club last year, and you are right Cellophane Star - it is a great venue.

Inexpensive venue for a Christmas party

Can anyone recommend a place to have a Christmas party? We have a maximum budget of $30.00 per person for food, which eliminates a lot of restaurants. We expect about 50-60 guests. We are open to pubs or alternative venues - it doesn't have to have "traditional" turkey and stuffing menu. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Best Vietnamese Vermicelli w/ pork & springrolls (Bún thịt nướng chả giò) in Calgary?

Song Han Vietnamese Restaurant in Kensignton offers a very large bun with a huge amount of crisp, fresh springrolls. I liked the addition of basil too. The noodles were lovely - not overcooked. The sauce smelled pretty pungent but wasn't overly sweet like at Golden Bell. I think I like this place the most - the only issue was service was very slow. A bottle of Big Rock cost only $4.00!

My favourite is Fat Kee for wonton and white flat noodles. I believe it's $6.00.

Wings in Calgary

Moose McGuires makes a tasty hot and teriyaki version. The wings are grilled, not breaded. Delicious.

Calgary -- Reef n' Beef.... Dated or Classic?

I hear you Lotti. My bf and I are both students. I don't like him to spend a lot of money on our nights out. He barbeques some great steaks, and I pick up some lobster tails from Superstore and grill it with browned butter and garlic and grated Parmesan cheese with some seasoning. Then I pick up some wine and voila - a steak and seafood dinner! Lol.

Where to buy: LOBSTER (Calgary)

I can vouch for Superstore seafood. I've bought oysters, crab, mussels and found it to be very fresh. Plus, the price is right.

Best wines around town? Favorite Canadian wines?

I love 8th Generation Chardonnay. And I don't normally enjoy Chardonnay. It's not Canadian, but I enjoy Eco Frog Rose.

Calgary - Petite: A little too warm, but great food

I heard on their website that they plan to reopen in October. Check out their facebook page and "like" it, and you are entered to win free tickets for the opening night. I can't wait to go again - I love everything about that restaurant.

Where can I buy AWESOME veggie burger patties?

I second President's choice - either portobello and swiss or the vegetarian patty. The portobello is creamy and "meaty".

ISO: Chinese White Plain Buns (YEG)

I found them -they are kept in the frozen section in a Korean store in a Korean strip mall on 10Ave. The strip mall is next to Community Foods.

Calgary soup and sandwich

I like Rustic Sourdough on 17th Ave. There are only a few tables, but I love their sandwiches and soup combo. Another place I enjoy is Vendome Cafe in Kensignton. Great butternut squash soup and duck confit sandwich.

Fresh shiitake mushrooms in YYC?

There is a Korean grocery store right next to Olive Chicken, which is located in the Beltline district - 1324 10 Ave SW Calgary,. I don't know the actual name of the grocery store, but it's the only one in the shopping centre. Cheap prices.

Gourmet & Organic Supermarkets in Calgary

I love Cookbook Co, just wish I could afford to buy some of their especially delicious items - like trout pate (around $22.00 ). I usually shop at Community on 10 Ave, about two blocks away from Coop, and a block away from Olive Chicken. The deli food is reasonably priced and tasty. The meats are good value too.

The new Calgary Farmers' Market at Blackfoot Centre will open tomorrow

I ordered most of their dim sum dishes and I found it below average. Some dumplings were dry or flavourless. Perhaps I ordered at the wrong time/day. Just my two cents.

2010 Foodie Tootle - Calgary

I'm copying and pasting straight from their website:

Saturday, August 20, Noon to 10 PM A Summer Tootle to Lethbridge

This tour will celebrate summer with a gorgeous barbecue and the best of the season’s
vegetables. We are going to picnic our way to Coalhurst for our first stop at Broek Pork Acres
to meet the Vanden Broek family and their pastured and naturally raised Berkshire pork. We’ll
then head onto Lethbridge to tour Broxburn Vegetables many acres and dine on the divine
swine and summer’s bounty of vegetables before a late evening return to Calgary.

Sunday, October 2, 10 AM sharp to 8:30PM – A Thanksgiving Turkey Tootle

This tour will give you a chance to shop directly at local farms for your Thanksgiving dinner the
following weekend. We’ll visit Poplar Bluffs for root vegetables, Winter’s Turkey farms, Paradise
Hill Farm followed by dinner at Heartland Café in Okotoks.

I'm going to attend the August event. It really is such a unique experience and the woman (Karen Anderson) puts so much effort into the event to make it fun, informative and delicious. I can't wait for the next feast. I don't remember the last time I ate so well. Seriously -we had two big feasts and several snacks.

2010 Foodie Tootle - Calgary

I went on a food tootle this spring to visit Ewe Farm, Noble farm (ducks), and a chicken farm with sheep. We had such a wonderful time. It was great to meet the farmers and their children and to learn about their products. The food was fabulous - lunch was a wonderful spread of meats, cheeses, trout pate, and a whole bunch of other treats. Beer and wine was included in all the meals. Dinner was incredible - duck spring rolls, lamb, asparagus, heritage tomatoes, duck salad, purple potatoes, and homemade pie. The cost was $120 but well worth it. I felt I got more than my money's worth. We were able to buy product from the farms - picked up lots goat cheese, lamb, and eggs. I could have gotten a duck, but I have no idea how to make it. I can't wait to attend another tootle.

Wurst - Calgary German Beer Haus

Went last night. Service was attentive, especially considering how busy the restaurant was that night. We ordered a ton of appies - complete rip-off. The taste was okay but the portion was tiny. Then we ordered two $40.00 platters of meat (pork and sausage), which was very filling but really salty and bland. However, the guys I was with really enjoyed the meats so perhaps it was just me. I noticed the manager was trying very hard to please customers by being proactive, responding to questions, concerns, etc. Personally, I enjoyed the environment, beer and service but it was really pricey. Next time we'll skip the appies and go straight for the meat.

best pizza in calgary?

I'm gonna confess something ... I really enjoy the pizza made by Safeway (11th ave and Brentwood). We bought it because it was on sale for $6.00 (regular price $10.00) and it's HUGE - as in a super large pie. It's a fresh pie - I think its made by the employees of Safeway - it's in a large box but doesn't have a "Safeway" brand. The toppings are thin - but it has a nice gooey cheese. Lol. I don't know what's wrong with me - I've tried Spiros, Famoso, and Pulcinella in Calgary, but still I prefer the Safeway pie. I also make a killer crust - it's a no fail recipe and so easy to make... but it's easier and cheaper just to get one premade.
