Food habits that make you go...

My sister-in-law cannot eat without biting on her spoon/fork. It's maddening and gives me chills. It's bad enough when a baby does it but I can accept that. A grown woman? NO.

Saw a person ask for ketchup at a Chinese restaurant the other day. Then he needed a refill because he wiped the dish clean. And no...he did not order French fries...it was for his Chinese plate.

Lowell-area gems

Me neither! I assume southern NE to be RI/CT/south of Boston.

Pregnant and Miserable

As someone who's had 4 failed fertility cycles since June and no children yet, I'd give anything to have your "problem".

Do you have a crockpot that maybe you can just throw everything in and leave it for the day to cook itself?

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Bake sale favorites time again

Look on Pinterest and search for Christmas cookie pops. I found a picture of a pretty tree and it looks quite easy when you break it down. I'll try to attach the picture here.

What do you wish you could do that you've never been able to master?

I can never roll out a round, flat pizza crust if I use the store bought dough for a quick dinner.

I just tell my husband now that he's so much better at it so he should make dinner. And it's the truth!

I can never make a good gravy with the meat droppings and flour either.

Now that Stop and Shop has pulled out of NH, any items you miss?

I miss being able to run into Stop & Shop in Bedford and/or Manchester for the convenience factor. Their self-checkout was faster than the express lines at Hannafords or Market Basket too.

I liked S&S plain meatless spaghetti sauce when in a pinch (I doctor it up ok) and the S&S seltzer water would always be on sale (we'd buy about 24 1-liter bottles a week). But I can buy some when down in MA and stock up.

We are still well stocked on some stuff from the half off sale before closing. :)

I can't take Market Basket's zoo status when it's packed and I'm in a hurry!

It's nothing to be ashamed of but.......

I haven't trained mine yet and it's been almost 20 years. They are slow learners. :)

OMG I would take their skin too, isn't that gross LOL??!!

One of the reasons I love to go to my parents house vs. my inlaws as the skin comes off the turkey at my parents house. My inlaws would be mortified!

What DON'T you like in a sandwich?

Apparently I miss a lot of the responses too by some on Chowhound. I must have a different sense of humor or something but the replies make no sense to me.

But I understood you perfectly, MRS. :)

Saying thank you to the host

We usually trade off hosting with the same friends so we might text saying how good a dish was or something like that but we'd be writing a lot of the same notes back and forth every time. Sometimes you host, sometimes you are the guest. For us, it's all a wash. Of course, we do thank them when we leave their house.

Days before/after a holiday

Our tradition is Chinese food the nights before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It's all takeout, no prep or messing up the kitchen. We have our order down finally so we don't have leftovers with an already full fridge. It's so fun! I can't believe the holidays are already here again!

Do I keep this 9qt French Oven?

What a wonderful gift! I'd keep it too. Like Mikie said, it's easier to keep it and know you have it vs. justifying buying it yourself. Enjoy!

catering questions

I never thought aluminum trays at a party were tacky, it is what it is. :)

Have a few nice centerpieces (simple flowers in vases or something seasoned themed) and a nice tablecloth for the trays to rest on (with trivets, etc. of course!) and enjoy the time with your son and all the stories you will hear his friends tell.

Can't wait to read about the party afterwards!

Pizza, pizza.....north of Boston

The Chateau in Andover on 93 has really good pizza. Their sausage and hot cherry pepper is my absolute favorite!

How Do You Like Your Cold Cuts Sliced, Thin or Thick?

I feel like there is a fine line between too thin and too thick for my coldcuts. I wish I could go behind the deli and slice them myself!

For a sandwich made custom ordered, thin all the way. But for coldcuts to go at the deli, if they are too thin I can't get them separated once I get them home.

We have a local deli that will put the dividers between the cheese slices but I feel bad making them do that if I'm ordering a whole pound.

Favorite cold cut sandwich is imported ham, provolone cheese, yellow mustard and a few chopped dill pickles on a crusty spucky roll. YUM. I could go for one right now!

Holiday Stress Advice?

I keep getting deja vu flashbacks reading everyone's posts here!

My inlaws are also so stringent in dining times, menu items, pie flavors, etc.

At my parents' house, we start with a glass of wine, catching up while enjoying some olives, mixed nuts, veggies and dip. Nothing that is going to kill our appetite but something to curb the urge to eat the turkey right out of the oven before it rests!

The year I got to my inlaws and there was no turkey scent when we walked in the door? I was beside myself. My FIL was doing some work at a local club and decided to cook the turkey in the commercial oven to make it easier. Isn't half the enjoyment of turkey day smelling the turkey cook? We could have just had deli turkey that day as far as I'm concerned.

This thread made me realize there is no way in heck I'm going to my inlaws this year. :)

What Are You Cooking Today?

We had stuffed pork chops with cornbread stuffing (just the bagged Pepperidge Farm to make it quickly) and it was so good.

Made a batch of pretzel rolls with a pizza dough that had to be used up before the bag exploded.

Tomorrow will probably be taco chicken in the crockpot to make tacos for dinner. Yum!
