Flaky, buttery, croissant

I wonder if both Science Chick and teezeetoo are right. I've had to-die-for croissants at Athans in Brookline and ones that were just meh. Perhaps they defrost the frozen when they run out of fresh? It's hard to explain the vast difference in quality I've experienced there.

Searching for a good burrito

Yes to (b)! Los Amigos in West Roxbury does a pretty decent chile verde burrito. I am from LA and in general have been very disappointed in the quality (and blandness) of Mexican food in the Boston area. I wish I could find a place that makes chile relleno burritos, but still haven't found one out here.

Vegan or dairy free birthday cake

Hi, OP here. I just realized I never updated my post. Well, it turned out we ordered a cake from Veggie Galaxy, and while on the expensive side ($45), it was outstanding! We had the coconut citrus, and it was moist, flavorful, and delicious (more citrusy than coconutty if memory serves). Since then, we'have tried their chocolate and carrot cake by the slice, and been equally impressed. I think I'm going for the carrot or the peanut butter chocolate this year. Here's a link to Veggie Galaxy's cakes and bakery offerings: http://www.veggiegalaxy.com/boston-ve... . Thanks to everyone who recommended VG!

Oriental Pearl in Brookline - separate vegetarian menu?

The Happy Cow site claims this restaurant has a separate vegetarian menu. Sounds exciting, but I can't seem to find it online. Has anyone actually seen this menu, and is it extensive? Does it include vegetarian meat? Also, are there paper copies available to take home? It would be a dream come true to have another takeout/delivery place near us with lots of vegan options (it's hard for me to stop by and check it out as I have twin toddlers and parking in that area can be difficult).

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Vegan or dairy free birthday cake

Bumping up this thread in case any new bakeries in Boston have opened where one might get a vegan cake. No recipes, please - my attempt at self-deprecating humor in my original post seems to have misfired, as I do know how to bake and have many vegan cookbooks - I am specifically looking for a vegan bakery, as this is my husband's wish. So... anything new opened in the last year, or any suggestions not already mentioned in the thread? Thanks for your input.

Vegan or dairy free birthday cake

So I ended up going to Bella Moto Bakery in Arlington, based on the response to a previous post. I got a vegan carrot cake, and my verdict is just ... meh. It was okay, not great, and waaaaay overpriced (can't remember if it was $35 or $40) for a six inch cake. My husband thought it tasted more like carrot bread than cake, and the frosting was unmemorable. I also got a red velvet cupcake, which was pleasantly moist yet lacking in flavor.

Next time, will try Blacker's, Cafe Indigo, or just making one myself! Thanks to everyone for your responses. Hopefully more Boston-area bakeries will offer vegan options in the future.

Vegan or dairy free birthday cake

I've seen this thread here before, but it's at least a year old so I thought I'd revive this topic. I need a vegan or dairy free (he'll eat eggs in prepared food, but is lactose intolerant) cake for my husband next week and he doesn't trust my ability to make one. We're hoping to find a new place that makes flavorful, delicious cake: we've tried Fiore's and Whole Foods and were not impressed. We liked Hippie Chick Bakery, but it's too far away. Worse comes to worse, I'll order something to be delivered from Cafe Indigo in NH as we know and like their cake, but I was hoping to find something local. I know there are some cupcake places that have vegan cupcakes, but I prefer cake.

Haven't tried Blacker's Bakeshop - what are their cakes like? And will Flour make a vegan cake if asked?

Any other ideas? TIA!
