Brasa on a Friday night

I was thinking about taking some out-of-towners for a casual dinner at Brasa on Friday night.

Since its small, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what time it gets busy or what the best time to go might be?

Another other tips for getting the most out of it?

Thanks for the advice.

Searching the Skyway...

Without a doubt, Andrea's Pizza. Best pizza around hands down. They have a few locations actually, so depending on where you're working you may go to a different one that I would. I go to the one by Macy's where Andrea works.

They do great pizza by the slice. Not just traditional cheese, pepperoni, and sausage either. They have a pretty good BBQ Chicken, Cajun Chicken, and I believe they also a do a gyro pizza that people seem to like. Definitely worth checking out if you like pizza and just want a quick bite.

Good food near Hilton on Marquette?

Most places are going to be up a few blocks on Nicollete mall. There a a bunch of choices. In no particular order: Brits Pub, Barrio, The Local, The Newsroom, The Dakota Jazz club, Lyons Pub, Kieran's Irish Pub, Bradstreet (in the Graves Hotel). On the other side of Loring Park from you is Joe's Garage, they have a good happy hour too.

Banana Cream Pie?

I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions of where I can get a good banana cream pie? Important factors would be: The crust, the pudding/filling, and the amount of "banana-ness". I prefer real banana as opposed to just banana flavoring of course.

Let me know if you've got any ideas....

Philly Cheesesteak in Minnesota

If you've read the description Uncle Franky's has of their "Philly Cheese steak" I don't think its unreasonable for people to be disappointed.

"Philly Cheesesteak respect to “pats” 6oz shaved beef grilled and put on a flaky “schuylkill” roll with cheese whiz, ad onions or giardinara, yes you may substitute mozzarella or American, but no way swiss on a phil. 6"

To me that raises people's expectations (at least mine when I went, the one and only time I'll ever go) and then fails to deliver what they say.

If I've never had a cheese steak at Uncle Franky's and I order one, why shouldn't I be disappointed when the roll I get wasn't what they said it would be (schuylkill-like), and certainly doesn't show Pats any respect by being a very poor attempt.

To me they're claiming that they are using Philly-like ingredients, and they do not. Therefore, why wouldn't a person be disappointed?

If a person went back again and complained that it was a bad sandwich again, then yeah, they're an idiot for wanting it to be a real Philly Cheese Steak. But for first timers, its very very misleading.

Philly Cheesesteak in Minnesota

So does that mean you don't eat any italian food if you're not in Italy? You don't eat any mexican food if you aren't in mexico? I'm sure you do.

The point is that while local ingredients do make a difference, its the people making the food and their recipes that matter.

Besides maybe you shouldn't be getting mad at the people who are disappointed when they order a philly cheesesteak and don't get what they expect. Perhaps you need to be mad at the people that use the word Philly in order to sell more of them. Kinda like false advertising, no?

Help finding a "beefy" restaurant

I'm not sure how far you're willing to drive, but if you're willing to drive into the city, it doesn't get much "beefier" than Fogo De Chao. Granted its not for everyone and can be pricy, but its a carnivore's dream come true. All you can eat, endless beef, served on swords and carved for you at your table...The salad bar is also AMAZING, but you were interested in the meat.

I also hear great things about The Strip Club in St. Paul.

Sorry if you were only looking for a place in the SW Metro area, but if you're willing to drive a little, I think you'll be happy with either of those.

You could also try calling United Noodles located at 2015 E 24th Street in Minneapolis. Their phone number is: 612-721-6677 if you wanted to call ahead and ask if they carry it. And here is a link to their website for you to check out as well: http://www.unitednoodles.com/. Hope that helps.

Is there really GOOD pizza in MSP???

For all the East Coasters on here looking food good Pizza in Minneapolis/St Paul, I have good news.

Andrea Pizza is the real deal They have three locations around the TC area, the St Paul one looks like its called Andrea's, but according to the website its definitely the same people.

The family that owns it is from Cape May and they definitely know what they're doing. Its good sauce and the crust is excellent too. They have the sauce to cheese to crust to grease ratio down.

The guy working there today saw I had a Phillies hat on and asked me if I wanted it "east coast" I wasn't entirely sure what he meant, but I said yes and he took the slice back to the oven and made it extra crispy for me.

I've been there a number of times and I've never been disappointed. Anyone from back east missing home should definitely check them out.

Philly Cheesesteak in Minnesota

To make all of this worse, I saw a report on the news tonight that had a couple of Vikings players, with nothing else to do in snowy Philadelphia, going to Pat's. It just keeps gettin' worse!

Philly Cheesesteak in Minnesota

Jim's would be my #2 from Philly's top places.. Pats and Jim's both chop their meat up on the grill before they serve it. Geno's like to to serve it a little less so. In all of the cases the meat is a higher quality and the chewy, italian, sub roll is just as important.

If you ever go back to Philly, you'll have to try Tony Luke's. Then you can say you've had The Big 4.

Philly Cheesesteak in Minnesota

I'm a Philly guy and I haven't been able to make it home in a quite some time. I finally had to do something about my craving for a cheesesteak so I did some looking...

I went into Uncle Franky's just the other day after reading their menu's description (copied and pasted below):

"respect to “pats” 6oz shaved beef grilled and put on a flaky “schuylkill” roll with cheese whiz, ad onions or giardinara, yes you may substitute mozzarella or American, but no way swiss on a phil."

LIES ALL LIES!!!!

Needless to say, it wasn't even close. The bread they claim to be Schuykill-like (I'm assuming they meant Amoroso) was more like ciabatta bread, and didn't resemble a cheesesteak roll AT ALL.

The meat wasn't shaved rib-eye like they use at Pat's (and geno's for that matter). I'd describe it more like the meat from a sandwich you'd buy at Arby's. In fact a beef 'n cheddar actually tates better to me than the junk they tried to feed me at Franky's

At least they had cheez-wiz, but that hardly made up for the rest of the problems.

Maybe I got a bad one because some people on here do seem to like them. Maybe I'm way off, but in my opinion, DO NOT go there if you're looking for the real deal, because this aint it!.

single best pizza in MSP/ No Time To Research Chow Archives

I'm originally from Philadelphia and I've had my share of good east coat pizza.

I'm not sure what exactly everyone else on this board defines pizza as, but I've got a suggestion that hasn't made the list. Andrea's Pizza- there are three locations in the Twin Citiesl- I go to the one downtown in the Skyway off LaSalle.

It is by far the closest thing I've found to real pizza out here in Minneapolis. There's nothing wrong with wood-fire pizza, but Pizzeria pizza is a whole 'nother animal. There are a bunch of places in town that put sauce, cheese and toppings on bread, and that might be alright for some, but Andrea's has the right mix of sauce, cheese, crust, and grease. Its big and floppy and makes me miss home....

If you're looking for good NYC/Philly Pizza, don't waste your time anywhere else. I mean the owner's name is Andrea GAMBINO, and I assure you, you don't get to use that last name if your Italian food isn't good. They will hunt you down!
