Restaurant Suggestions for a week in SD (celiac-friendly)

Thanks all - these suggestions are great! I'm glad to hear there is good coffee in the vicinity :) The hotel restaurants do look amazing, but I'm not sure our budget will allow too many meals there!

Restaurant Suggestions for a week in SD (celiac-friendly)

Hello Chowhounders,

We are headed down to San Diego on our honeymoon for a week in June and staying at the Grand Del Mar. I'm looking for some suggestions, ideally in the nearby vicinity (we do have a car, but close is still nice) for just really good, casual food. I am a celiac, so that is the only catch - other than that, we just love good food. And we're diehard cyclists, so we come with big appetites!

Also, best coffee in SD? And that I'm willing to drive for!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Celiac visiting Scottsdale

Thank you - I did peruse that thread. I was just curious if there were any specific places with more pescatarian and vegetarian gluten free options, especially in and around our hotel.

Celiac visiting Scottsdale

Hello Fellow Chowhounders,

I'm visiting Scottsdale next week for a little getaway, and looking for the best places for a pescatarian, celiac to dine. From the research of done, Scottsdale looks pretty gluten-free friendly as a whole, but I'm just curious if there are any "must-visit" places. We'll be staying at the Fairmont Princess, so a couple of close options would be great.

Thanks for your help!

Gluten Free Dining - Calgary

I just wanted to add that I did try Jelly's gluten free doughnut last week - and they are delicious!! They were very up front about the fact that while they use gluten free ingredients, they may have come into contact with gluten, which I appreciated. I did have a mild reaction, but it was worth it for such a yummy treat.

I would also highly recommend checking out Big Star Bakehouse, which just opened this weekend. Delicious bread and treats from a fully gluten-free bakery!!

Gluten Free Dining - Calgary

Thanks! I did see that thread on breakfasts, but I just skimmed it as I'm not really one to go out for breakfast.

I heard the awesome news about Jelly last week - life without gluten just got better!!

Gluten Free Dining - Calgary

Thanks for the tips! Knowledge is the most important thing - I've had a couple instances of getting partially gluten free meals (I guess that's what happens when it's also a "fad diet"), and ending up very ill.

I am really looking forward to checking out Cassis Bistro.

Gluten Free Dining - Calgary

Hello All,

I have recently developed a fairly severe gluten allergy, and am really starting to miss eating out! I am also a pescatarian (which may have to go, but I don't really want to cross that bridge yet). So my question - does anyone have any good suggestions for dining out gluten-free? Especially casual, everyday type places! As a disclaimer, I don't really love going out for a salad (unless it's really awesome).

We have been to Ed's and Double Zero several times in the last little while, just because they're easy. Both are enjoyable, but I'd like to discover a few more places. Tried Dairy Lane, but while they offer gluten free buns, all their veggie burgers contain gluten. I've also been underwhelmed by the Coup, but may have to give it another chance.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions! I hate being the "problem" customer (and thus am still struggling with this allergy) at restaurants, so I do try and do my research ahead of time.

Banff Recommendations?

We were in Banff this spring and had a really fantastic dinner at Evergreen. The place was almost empty, but the food and service was spot on. Very impressed! We went to the Bison the night before (which was the one I was really excited about), and were thoroughly disapointed. Food was only ok - the infamous bison burger was so overcooked it crumbled, and the service was horrendous (we sat with dessert menus for over 40 minutes!). That said, I've heard many other people rave about it.

Business Trip - Looking for dining recommendations for a gluten free pescatarian in Toronto

Thank you! While I'm not opposed to using transit (or cabs), since my time will most likely be crunched, I'd rather just stay in the area.

Business Trip - Looking for dining recommendations for a gluten free pescatarian in Toronto

Hello Chowhounders,

I will be in town on business, staying at Pantages (across from Eaton Centre), and am looking for good places to grab quick dinners as a gluten-free pescatarian. Not a picky eater, but those restrictions can be challenging!! No car, so walking distance only please!

I would also really appreciate recommendations for good coffee, and a good grocery store in the area.

Thanks for your help

NY foodies need help in Banff/Jasper

We actually had a very similar experience at Bison this spring. The food was just ok, and we were abanonded for over half an hour before being asked about ordering dessert. I guess it just didn't live up to the hype for me.

While I'm sure it's too late for you now, we did end up having an absolutely phenomenal meal in Banff at the restorant in the Delta hotel!

Iced Tea in Calgary

Just as an FYI (I couldn't tell from your message if you know this already or not), but there is a David's tea at Southcentre. Definitely one of my favorite stores!

Peanut Butter - Calgary

I actually found it there not too long ago as well! I think I actually screamed with excitement. I still haven't found the Chunky (which is my fav), but they do have the white chocolate, which is a close second.

Affordable, quiet anniversary dinner in Calgary

Thanks all for your suggestions. We ended up going to Cafe Koi, which is a personal "go-to" type place. Food is consistently good, and the atmosphere is always pleasant.

Affordable, quiet anniversary dinner in Calgary

Thank you! Aida's would've been perfect, except for having a mediterranean dinner planned for the next evening :)

I've sadly been a little underwhelmed by The Coup, although it does get rave reviews! I was forever spoiled by Rebar in Victoria though!

Affordable, quiet anniversary dinner in Calgary

Hello all,

I've been browsing old threads for a while now, but I'm still struggling to find a restaurant recomendation that fits the bill. We have an anniversary coming up and are looking for somewhere to grab a nice dinner, without paying a fortune. We leave for the Napa Valley shortly, so I'll save the splurging for there!

Must haves: quiet, comfortable, good service, pescatarian or vegetarian options, and of course, good food.

Divino and Charcut popped into my head, but they can both be quite noisy. Alloy and River Cafe also were considered, but both are on the pricey side. Any other thoughts? Hidden gems? Location is not an issue.

Thanks!!

Mmm thank you! That looks exactly like the kind of place we're looking for, and it looks like an easy walk from our hotel (the Westin).

San Fran and Napa Valley Vacation - Fresh, healthy, affordable choices?

My partner and I are headed to San Francisco and the Napa Valley for a week, and I'm looking for dining suggestions! Here are the details:

Location: Union Square and Napa (with a car in both locations, but close choices would be preferred)

Meals: All of the above (and we love good coffee enough to consider it our 4th meal)

Preferences: Her - pescatarian, otherwise not fussy
Him - fully an omnivore, but not terribly adventurous

The goal: Really good food! Money isn't an issue, but we genuinely just prefer casual meals. We're just after fresh, healthy, local delicious food.

I know there are a million of these threads on the board, but it seems like everyone is looking for the best of the best. Our trip is really about relaxation and biking, not fine dining, so we're just looking for tasty and comfortable.

Peanut Butter - Calgary

Glad you liked it! I was actually down in the US last week, and stocked up! Planet Organic South is still the only place I've found it in Calgary, but it can be tricky to find it in stock.

Visiting Scottsdale - Looking for must-try recommendations

Noca looks right up my alley! Thanks.

I'd be happy to travel for good coffee, it there happen to any that you think are worth the drive? So far, everything I've heard has been in line with the previous comment, that superb coffee is hard to find in the area.

Visiting Scottsdale - Looking for must-try recommendations

Hello,

I will be visiting Scottsdale from Calgary, Alberta and am interested in hearing what some of the best restaurants, etc. are. We will be staying at the Westin Kierland, but will be out and about getting some shopping in. I am a non-fussy pescatarian, and my companion is pretty open minded about food as well (although prefers to stay away from asian, and heavily spiced foods).

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee (definitely a huge coffee lover), treats - you name it! Just looking for some local recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for Restaurant Recommendation for Family Dinner in Calgary

Thanks all! I'm leaning towards Big Fish - never been (it just always seems that much out of downtown), but it definitely seems to be well liked.

Divino is one of my personal fav's as well - but I've actually taken them there several times already so I thought this might be a good ocassion for something new!

Looking for Restaurant Recommendation for Family Dinner in Calgary

Hello Chowhounders,

Since I trust the advice and palates of those on here, here goes nothing. I'm looking for a restaurant to take my parents out for dinner in Calgary. Ideally, somewhere quiet enough to have a conversation, not too formal (read: I don't want them to have to dress up), but with delicious food. Downtown, 17th ave, or any of the surrounding areas are fine and price is not an issue. They are not too big on ethnic foods, and I am a pescatarian. Most of the restaurants I can think of are either too fancy, too loud or just don't have good food.

Hopefully you guys can help!

Peanut Butter - Calgary

For everyone's information - the Planet Organic south location does sell a few of the flavours! They were running a bit low when I stopped by, but said that they do an order every week (it was just backlogged due to the holidays)

Enjoy!
