Meet in Culver City - Mussels good. Else...

Wife and I hit Meet for dinner. Pleasantly surprised to be there for Happy Hour, which is half price apps and more or less half price on mussels. Mussels were great - perfectly cooked, sauces were fresh and delicious. Side of frites were fine, but nothing special. Crab cakes more or less a failure. Crust was fine, but gummy inside with too much binder. Creme brulee equally flat. Tasted fine, but they seem to be working out the sugar and torch, and the creme part was a little to close to plain vanilla pudding. Service was attentive and friendly. Wine and beer also half price. Definitely go back for happy hour and stick to mussels and dip with bread instead of the fries.

Seltzer Sources

As everyone has said, six-packs from Vons. But I stopped buying those when I was gifted a SodaStream. Works well.

Has anyone ever braved K & A Canton Restaurant in the Cheviot Hills Shopping Center?

I did, finally. I started simple, pan fried dumplings and hot and sour soup. Not successful. Totally plausible there is something the cook is really good at. Not these.

Hot N Juicy Crawfish coming to West Hollywood Gateway

I went for lunch today. I don't like what I refer to as "the tailed seafood" but my dining companion and I split a pound of mussels, a pound of clams, and a fried catfish basket. The fried stuff was competent, but the fish was a little mushy. The bivalves were overcooked and room temperature. There is a shtick at the place, it's supposed to be sort of a mess, like a crab or crawfish feast on paper with no plates etc. Still the presentation is really weird. The seafood is served in a plastic bag. As near as I can tell they cook the stuff in advance and then put it in the bag with the spices and shake it around. Maybe if we weren't the only people in the place it would have been cooked to order properly. No idea. Maybe crawfish or shrimp are a better bet. I won't be finding out.

Does it compare to Hop Li (which I actively like) or Twin Dragon (if I still lived nearby I would go when the craving for Hot and Sour soup came on urgently). Hu's Szechuan is also nearby - I've only had take out, my understanding is that it is Twin Dragon-esque.

Library Alehouse downhill?

We used to go quite often, and everything tended to be quite good. This Sunday we were pleasantly surprised to see some changes to the menu, but the food was really not great. Everything not quite hot, fries not as crispy as usual. Probably haven't been in about a year... Anyone else notice the quality dipping? The prices were never low, but it used to be a good value. I don't see going back anytime soon unless I hear this was an off night.

Closures in Culver City

Just drove by this weekend and the whole building is surrounded by chain link. There is a "For Lease" sign up, but I guess it's to line up tenants for rebuilt space. Boo.

Anyone know the status of Shik Du Rak in Hollywood?

Didn't swing by - ended up at Palsaik Samgyupsal for 8 Flavors of Pork. It was quite delicious, but didn't quite scratch my itch. Any suggestions in Koreatown for other places that specifically do the rice paper thing?

Anyone know the status of Shik Du Rak in Hollywood?

It's apparently moved to 100 Western, but I can't get a human (or message) at the phone number from yellowpages.com...

Any standbys if I decided to just go and see? I haven't been to Soot Bull Jeep in years, so that would be my inclination - is that going to be an hour wait around 8pm?

Iron Grill on Pico Blvd?

And it looks like it's out of business? They don't seem to be answering the phone lately. We had been ordering lunch at work - passably good sushi with a 1/2 price deal that put a satisfying sushi lunch in the company price range.... Anyone driven by lately? Not heartbroken, but curious.

Minori downhill alert... Maybe late to the game here...

Minori was my go-to neighborhood sushi spot for about two years, and went last week for the first time in maybe 8 months. Inexcusably slow on a thursday night with not too many people, fish quality was fine but not outstanding, and the "whitefish carpaccio" was a bummer. Too thick, the fish was warm, the garlic was burnt. I know it's an affectation of a dish, but it used to be something my wife and I always ordered because we enjoyed it so much. The sushi chef, who I believe to be the owner, was oddly incommunicative and mumbly. Custom-ordered handroll was good (yellowtail, pickles, shiso leaf) but couldn't salvage the night. The check came in way higher than I expected, and definitely not worth it.

Hide Sushi visit...

Had a good hour and a half before the Ricky Jay show last Saturday night, and was unfamiliar with the local sushi places... Took a flier on Hide, based on the citysearch reviews. It was more or less as described - No frills, but the price/quality ratio was superb. Very, very fresh tasting fish, friendly chef amenable to a custom roll we requested (chopped yellow-tail, shiso, yellow pickles - daikon, I guess?). We had a fair but not too large dinner and a couple beers and got out for $60 with tip. We were there early and had no wait to sit at the sushi bar, though by the time we left every seat was filled. And we still had an hour to kill.

Pizza delivered from the Coop

Just moved two miles closer to the The Coop, almost on a direct path away from Damiano's as the crow flies. Had the Coop deliver a ricotta and fresh tomato pizza. Looks like we went the wrong direction!

Pretty ordinary. Everything tasted good, but it was simply too heavy all-around. The crust was puffy and thick throughout without a hint of crispnesss. A touch too much mozzarella and sauce - proportions were close to the better known delivery chains.

Not going to repeat, I am afraid...

UN-Sceney in Culver City?

Oh yeah! I really liked that place when I went a couple months ago. Casual vibe, but all kinds of interesting dishes. Excellent and friendly service as well.

UN-Sceney in Culver City?

While Bamboo is good, I wouldn't describe it as anywhere near cheap. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck next door at Cafe Do Brasil (though you will have to bus your own table) or at the Nepali place down the street. I like Gaby's on Venice for Middle Eastern, though the service is awful. Novocento on Main would be a a good option for Italian. Le Dijonaisse in the Helms Bakery is usually good as well.

Search the board for Culver City, and maybe check back if you have more questions?

Good fish sandwiches

I am a huge fan of the Ahi "Burger" at Library Alehouse on Main in Santa Monica. It's not a burger at all - seared ahi steak with wasabi cole slaw on a nice roll. Get the sweet potatoe fries to go with...

Pho 999 and Pho 1 in Van Nuys...What to order?

Seems like there are multiple branches of Pho 999 in Van Nuys, one very close to my work. Are they the same owners? Is there a quality difference? Or should I just go to Pho 1?

Library Alehouse's Burgers

I don't think I've ever had a regular burger there, and much of the menu seems like things to be avoided on price-point alone... On the other hand, the ahi "burger" (not really a burger, it's a seared ahi steak) and cajun chicken sandwich are both delicious. My wife almost always gets the beet salad. Also, the fries tend to be great.
