Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Thanks everyone for the great input! I'll be sure to write up a report upon return.

Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Thanks fame da lupo - I love pretzels! I've been checking out the Sierra Grille on Yelp - looks good!

Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Thanks for the Hampshire tip. I definitely want to head over there while in town - I'll be renting a bike so I do hope the weather cooperates.

Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Thanks for the "dirty truth" - glad to hear about the mussels! Can't wait to prowl around!

Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Thanks both for the Joe's recommendation - been there MANY times as a student in the 80s. One of my favorite all time Noho haunts and definitely on our list!

Do they do mussels? I'm dying for a good mussels fra diavla!

Visiting Northampton Next Month - Restaurants and Grinders

Hi I'm visiting Noho from SF next month for my college reunion. I see that there are TONS of new restos in Noho since my "days". My buddy and I are opting out of lunches and dinners on campus and I'd love some mid-priced recommendations for either. I'm more interested in "valley centric" type places as opposed to ethnic (I can get plenty of that here in SF). We'll have cars and don't mind traveling.

I'd also love to know the best place for a hot grinder.

Thanks in advance!

Paris in Mid-September

Thank you everyone for your kind suggestions! We're definitely going to the Best of the SW on Sunday (which is where I'll be bicycling the week prior).

If I have extra Euros left our last night (Wed.), is Joel Robuchon's Atelier worth visiting? I've been to the one in Las Vegas and had a great eating experience. Thank you again!

Paris in Mid-September

Merci Parigi - We will indeed be in Paris the weekend of the 18th! Wonderful recommendations to get us started. I was somewhat skeptical about Rue Cler since all the tourist books tout it...esp. Rick Steves. We'll steer clear. Let's hope the weather has cooled down by then.

Paris in Mid-September

I’ll be rendezvous-ing with my girlfriend in Paris mid-September for 5 nights (we’re in our mid-40s). First visit for both of us (I live in San Francisco and she lives in Florida). We’ll be staying in the 10th on the edge of the Marais and will essentially have 4 full days to explore your beautiful city (Sunday through Wednesday; we arrive Saturday afternoon). My friend is a culinary school graduate and we are both avid “foodies.” However, we are on a budget and I would like to make lunch our “big” meal of the day (formule menus around €20) and perhaps explore cheap ethnic options at night. Here’s how I’ve mapped out our 4 days (Sun-Wed), which, except for Sunday, can be re-arranged depending our mood, what’s closed Mondays and your recommendations:
• Sunday: Explore our “neighborhood” – find a food market to go to (recommendations please); find a place for Sunday “brunch” (is there such a thing in Paris?); dinner on the cheap, al fresco along Canal St. Martin, or cook in with food market purchases.
• Day 2 of 4: Visit Notre Dame then lunch somewhere (Saint Germain or Latin Quarter?). Supposedly there’s a much talked-about gelato/ice cream place on one of the Îles – do you know the name and is it worth checking out?
• Day 3 of 4: Eiffel Tower and surrounds. My idea is to have lunch first, visit Eiffel Tower, pass by where Julie Child lived, go to Rue Cler and pick up some foodstuffs for dinner, sunset cruise on Seine, then dinner al fresco riverside?
• Day 4 of 4: Visit Pere Lachaise (Jim Morrison pilgrimage); then lunch somewhere out that way – maybe somewhere in Belleville?

As for dinners on the cheap, any suggestions greatly appreciated – Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, etc. We can travel by foot or Metro. Merci in advance!

Bay Area wedding on a grad student's budget

Stern Grove was the first thing that came to my mind too! What's your budget?

I got married at Byington in the Santa Cruz Mtns. Wineries are expensive (base price to rent venue, you have to buy their wine, plus everything extra like a dance floor, wine pourers, etc). Oh, and most will want you to use one of their "approved" caterers. I think the caterer alone for my wedding 8 years ago with 120 guests was about $10k.

Good luck with your search!

If you enjoy St. John on London, you should definitely check out Incanto. Fergus was there this month cooking with Incanto chef Chris Cosentino.

Elegant Lunch for Family in the South Bay

Not technically South Bay, but maybe Trader Vic's in Palo Alto? Or St. Michael's Alley in Palo Alto?

Good restaurant to take mom to in Palo Alto?

I like the idea of St. Michael's Alley - very mom-friendly atmosphere. Out of the 10 entrees listed on their website dinner menu, only 3 are over $25 and all of them are under $30.

What should we get at Barbacco?

I loved the duck pate bruschetta with the onion marmalade. The 'nduja is to die for (pronounced n-doo-ya). I've also enjoyed the beet salad, the butcher's salad and the minestra soup. Haven't tried any of the sandwiches or pasta dishes yet...been going there about 1.5 times/week since they opened.

vietnamese, cambodian, lao, in san jose?

Chez Sovan for Cambodian. Two locations - one in Campbell and the other in San Jose. Campbell location has larger menu selection and white table cloths. San Jose location caters more to dine and dash lunch crowd.

Lulu Petite Closing

I third that sentiment. Bought a prepared item a few months ago on my way into work on a Saturday, only to discover (at lunch time) that said item had mold on it. Won't be missing them a bit

Places to AVOID on restaurant.com

Gift certificates don't expire in the state of California, so the restaurant has to honor them, so long as they're still in business and regardless of their "current" relationship status with restaurant.com. If they don't, in addition to restaurant.com, I would report them to the Better Business Bureau.

Peony Restaurant in Los Altos now offering Vietnamese Sandwiches

This place is mostly a Chinese restaurant, but has a limited Vietnamese menu. I was happening by today and noticed a sign in the window advertising Vietnamese sandwiches! I got the bbq pork and it was delicious! They also offer a ham & pate combo and chicken. There aren't many choices on the Peninsula for Vietnamese sandwiches, so I'm glad to have an excellent option nearby.
