CeeBee's Profile
Tired of the Same Old Westchester Saturday Night
We really enjoy Route 100 on Central Ave in Yonkers. We usually get pasta or steak, but I've had the fish special a few times and everything has always been very good.
Sick food
scrambled eggs...toast with butter and jelly...cheesey grits...mac and cheese...chicken rice soup...ice cream...applesauce...
corn and black bean salad
I use TJ's roasted corn, black beans and halved grape (or quartered cherry) tomatoes. I usually mix with S&P, a bit of cumin and a citrus-based dressing (which changes depending on what I have onhand...lime, orange and grapefruit are all favorites). Simple but delicious. I especially like mixing it with brown rice for lunch.
New job leaves me crunched for cooking time. I need time management tips.
I'm in the same boat. I usually have a well stocked freezer with some items that I've packed away after a big cooking day. Stuff like chili, lentil soup, meat sauce, brown rice, slow cooked pork shoulder, homemade burritos. The freezer is also full of some quick-defrosting items that I can turn into dinner pretty quickly. Things like shrimp, individually packed fish filets, breakfast sausage and waffles.
With these basics, I can do a good number of things...sometimes the chili goes in a bowl solo, sometimes over rice or noodles. Sometimes I cook it down and put it on a bun like a sloppy joe. The lentil soup is great served over pasta. The pulled pork can be doused with bbq sauce or thrown into a stir fry (I slow cook it on its own, no sauce or seasonings. This leaves my options open). The shrimp or fish can go with the rice or some pasta. I usually make a quick lemon and butter sauce to go over them, but sometimes they go into a stir fry. I do breakfast for dinner a lot. One of my favorites is fried egg over rice (with lots of soy sauce!).
As for the slow cooker, I was worried about the idea of leaving it on all day, too. So I eased into it. First I used it on a day I was planning I was spending at home anyway. I kept hovering over it, but there was no problem. Then I used it on a day when I was going to be out for an hour or two here and there. Then I left it on one day while I was at work (but came home at lunch to check on it). Now I'm okay with letting it go for the day!
Congrats on the new job. Hope my two cents helps.
School Has Started!! Autumn Has Arrived! And I've Got 31 REALLY Hungry Guys to Cook For!
Re: toppings for sweet potatoes...I often add diced sweet potatoes to my pumpkin chili but never thought to top a baked sweet potato with chili. Thanks for the inspiration AreBe!
ground lamb -- seeking inspiration
I've had the "lamb" tag of this blog bookmarked forever and keep meaning to give most of the recipes a try. Had forgotten about it until I read your post. Will have to get some soon and give one of them a go.

What's In Your Sandwich??
Some of my favorites lately:
Roasted beets (sliced) on multigrain with goat cheese. Extra good if you leave it open-faced and throw it under the broiler or in the toaster until the cheese gets just a bit brown. Top with a drizzle of honey and freshly cracked black pepper.
Egg salad with arugula and tomato on a baguette or sesame bagel.
Grilled keilbasa and mustard on rye. Great hot off the grill. Almost as amazing cold or room temp.
Help with Arugula
I love to throw some into a a bowl of hot pasta along with some chopped (fresh) tomatoes and some crumbled feta. A drizzle of good olive oil and some fresh ground pepper and you're good to go.
Lemon Simple Syrup Question
I second the rec for Ina's Lemon Cake. One of my favorites and a real crowd pleaser.
Favorite cookie recipe for an impossibly picky crowd?
I haven't tried these, but the sound similar to the first cookie you made...

Favorite easy pasta dish?
I love AG's pasta with Sundried Tomatoes and Beans and I've been meaning to try his Cauliflower and Anchovies dish for a while now. His site is such an inspiration to me!
Recently made a roasted garlic and olive oil pasta dish. I added some chopped sundried tomatoes and red pepper flakes. I felt like it was going to need something else, so I toasted up some fresh breadcrumbs with a bit of the oil that the tomatoes were packed in. Served it to rave reviews.
What a great thread...I'm getting all kinds of ideas.
after swim protein snacks - could use some help
I make rice and bean burritos that I keep frozen at work for snacks or lunch. There's usually some cheese, salsa and sweet potato in them too.
Super-Frugal Meals -- around $1 per serving -- Beyond Rice and Beans
I can't agree enough with the recommendation for Mujadara. I like mine with lots of caramelized onions and some plain yogurt. Leftovers make for a great take to work lunch (but keep the yogurt on the side until you're ready to eat).
substitute for cilantro
I've used celery leaves as a sub for cilantro (I'm allergic) in some Mexican dishes. I thought it tasted quite similar.
Three best weekend breakfasts near Times Square - just add beer ?
I know this is too late for the OP, but I just had a killer brunch at The Three Monkeys on 54th (between 7th and 8th, I think. Or maybe 8th and 9th). Their beer selection is insane. But if you're hungover, you must order the Poutine. Duck Confit, Cheese Curds, Gravy and Fried Eggs over fries. Awesome.

Anyone have great grapefruit dessert recipes?
I once swapped out grapefruit for lemon in a basic lemon bar recipe and it was delicious. Used ruby reds, so they were a lovely color, too. I don't recall which recipe I used, but your favorite or one from a trusted source should work.
Also, Ina's Lemon Cake, but with, again, ruby red grapefruit. Yum.
Looking for vegan dinner ideas
Sautee greens (chard, kale, spinach, collard...) with some olive oil, pinenuts and raisins. Serve over polenta. I could eat this all week.
yummy gourmet vegetarian chili
I don't have a recipe, but a suggestion. I started adding pumpkin puree (canned or fresh) to my meat chili. It really adds some depth of flavor and helps the chili from getting to watery. I especially like the flavor it adds when combined with cocoa and chipotles, both of which are in my regular recipe.
That being said, perhaps cubed pumpkin, squash or sweet potato would work well if you're looking for a veggie chili, not just a meat-less one.
What are you making for Christmas dessert this year?
Here's the lemony desserts thread I think you're talking about:

1 pot/pan Lunch/Dinner for 20 custodians
One more vote for the pulled pork. I buy the "Pernil" cut and do it in the slow cooker...always a hit at any event I go to. I buy club rolls and slice them into thirds for a slider-sized sandwich. I usually buy premade coleslaw to serve alongside.
Bestest Moist Chewy Gingerbread You Will Ever Have!
Wow, this sounds awesome. I may have to tackle this weekend.
Any chance you'd post the Chicken Recipe too? Or maybe share the name of the cookbook so I could track it down?
Potluck WOW dish
I made pulled pork once to bring to a company potluck and now that's the only thing I'm allowed to bring. I make mine in a slow cooker...throw a bone-in pork shoulder into the cooker with whatever spices you want. Let it go for a full 12 hours on low. Take it out, shred it and then add it back to the slow cooker with your favorite BBQ sauce for another hour or so. I like Sweet Baby Ray's, cut with a little ginger ale or soda to thin it out a bit.
I bring it to work in the slow cooker to heat it back up, but you could bring it in a microwave-sage container to heat there. I also cut club rolls into thirds for serving.
Sunday afternoon football...and good food
NY hound coming to Chicago in September. Just my boyfriend and I. We're looking for somewhere to watch the Jets/Pats game on Sunday, but would also like to be somewhere with good food. I'm guessing we're limited by the need to be somewhere with large screen televisions, but I know a town like Chicago has to have somewhere like that with standout food, too.
Anywhere in the city is fine, any type of food is fine. It's an afternoon game. We don't mind eating at the bar.
TIA!
More Pork Shoulder Questions
I put the shoulder (seasoned with just S/P and maybe some Penzys BBQ of the Americas) into the slow cooker. Sometimes I'll put some onions and root beer or ginger ale or cola in there too. Sometimes not. Very easy and very forgiving.
After I shred the meat I put it back into the slow cooker with some thinned out BBQ sauce (I love Sweet Baby Rays) and leave it in there to serve. Great for parties.
What's For Dinner? Part XXIV
I'm noshing on bits and pieces of things tonight. Five-spice roasted acorn squash. Kashi TLC fire roasted veg crackers with some swiss cheese. And a Kopparberg cider to wash it all down. It goes especially well with the squash.
Those fresh leafy celery tops
I'm allregic to cilantro/corriander and someone here suggested that I use celery leaves...others haven't noticed a difference!
So if you have extra, I say make some guacamole!
Food for a pet's death?
We had to put our Yorkie Kelsey down just after Thanksgiving. It happened a bit suddenly, but the morning before we took her to be put down we gave her raw carrots, her favorite treat. It took us all a good couple of days to get our appetites back, so we didn't really have a meal in celebration of her life, but I think of her every time I ear a baby carrot. I love the idea of sitting Shiva, or something similar. I think something like that would have helped.
Kelsey also loved vanilla ice cream, which we very rarely gave her, shrimp and bell peppers. She also tended to beg at the table more than usual when we were eating pasta.
My sincerest condolances to you. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.
Vietnamese restaurant shake-up on Jerome Ave
Does anyone know if David's restaurant (across the street) is still open? I'm not exactly sure where to look...
