Raleigh area for MD blue crabs??

Carolina dawg - either kind of steamed crabs would be great. I did pull up Backfins menu and gave them a call - pretty expensive but maybe worth it. Thanks to all.

Softshell crabs in restaurants Greensboro/Winston Salem

Love softshells and will be in Greensboro/Winston Salem area in a few weeks. Any restaurant suggestions where I might have the best chance of finding softshells would be appreciated.

Lox in Raleigh / South Wake

Haven't tried it but you should be able to get it at Weinberg's Deli on Falls of Neuse in Raleigh. They also have a very good whitefish salad. Also, though not the same, Fresh Market sells Ducktrap smoked salmons that are pretty tasty. Good luck.

Triangle, NC - Zagat Survey in the making

I think they left Maru in Cary out - I've been there twice since it opened and had really fresh sushi and great Asian "tapas" both times.

Raleigh - Farmers Cheese?

I've seen it at the indoor stands at the State Farmers Market.

Maximillian's Grill in Cary

Has anyone been here? They're offering a coupon and I wan to know if it's worth the trip. I do love the small plates/tapas concept where I can taste a lot of different items without gorging.

Franks Pizza on New Bern Ave, Raleigh

Anvil's cheesesteaks in Cary Swift Creek Center really rocks! I lived my first 40 years in Philly and have had many a cheesesteak at Italian Market and other renowned places. Anvil's roll, while good, is not the same as you get in Philly and they don't have the cheese wiz (I prefer the provolone anyway), but they are tops in my book. Also, check out some Philly memorabilia. My husband is donating his Temple Univ. basketball shirt the next time we're there.

For Pizza, I think Bella Monica on Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh is great. I lived in NY for 15 years and never found that the pizza lived up to Philly (or even California style) pizza. Bella Monica is garlicky, crispy thin crust, truly wonderful.

Maru (Cary)

Ate dinner at Maru last night and was pleasantly surprised by the food since their theme sounded like kind of a mashup. We had 3 Asian "tapas" - delicious seafood pancake, shrimp with asparagus and eel sauce, and beef wrapped in lettuce - all were light and tasty and, except for the shrimp dish which was small, worth the $7 tariff. We also had the special sushi roll of the day which was crab salad inside rice, with salmon overlay - it looked beautiful and tasted just as fresh and good. Also, I had my favorite unfiltered sake although their flight of flavored sakes sounded interesting. Will definitely be back. Mentioned to staff that their website really "sucks" since it doesn't include the menu or prices (you can get them on their facebook page). If they improve the site, I think they'll improve their business as well. Hope they take this advice since I'm sure I'm not the first to think this, or say it.

Raleigh, NC North Hills eats/special occasion

Coquette is my favorite, but have had good meal at Vivace, and Midtown Grille always gets good word of mouth. Or, drive just a few minutes more and go to 18 Seaboard.

New Indian Restaurant coming to DT Raleigh

Went back for dinner this week - the lunch is a superior buy. Prices at dinner are a bit high and all the waitstaff seemed new (we knew more about Indian food than they did). That said, I agree about the sauces with the papadums but their dishes are very tasty, less oily than most and the naan was great. Will come for lunch one more time before making my final pronouncement.

FRESH pasta in Raleigh area

Well, I paid $7 for a pound of Melina's black pepper fettucine and found it kind of tasteless and, though I cooked it "al dente", a bit soft. Her stuffed raviolis may be great but this product left something to be desired. The search continues...maybe I'll find Extrusions somewhere...

Thanks, but I haven't been impressed wit Capri's emphasis on packaged goods, though understand since this is mostly an online business.

FRESH pasta in Raleigh area

Was shocked today looking for fresh pasta to find that Trader Joe's, Fresh Market & Whole Foods had such a small selection of fresh pasta (NOT stuffed raviolis). Will I fare any better at Southern Seasons or Waver's Market? I don't really want to go that fr for something like this. Also, I eill try Antonio's Market in Lafayette Villsge but I'm not holding out too much hope. Can anyone throw me a liifeline or must I wait til my visit to Phila. in August?

raleigh nc - vino restaurant or other italian

Oh my god, ate at Casa Carbone and thought it was awful. Sauces heavy; food didn't feel freshly made, decor outdated, a retro feel (but not in the good sense). Have liked Vivace in the past. Still want to try Gravy and 518 West.

Chow in Raleigh, NC for one night, looking for a great restaurant.

I love both Glenwood Grill and 18 Seaboard for wonderful simple yet sophisticated food at a good price (though not cheap). The atmosphere at each of these feels comfortable yet special enough that I'll be celebrating my birthday at one of them.

New Indian Restaurant coming to DT Raleigh

Ate at Mantra for lunch last Saturday and it was delicious. They dropped their weekend buffet in favor of an "executive lunch" and this was its first day on the menu. The exec. lunch was choice of 3 dishes from lunch menu, and it came with naan, rice, salad, chutneys, dessert - all for $24.95 for 2. Choice of seasoning ranged from mild to "indian hot". We chose 2 dishes at medium and one at hot and all three were great - paneer kadai, chicken chetta...., lamb vindaloo. As at all "good" Indian restaurants, each dish was distinctively seasoned and felt freshly prepared. All in all, can't wait to go back despite erratic service because they had gotten reviewed the day before and hadn't properly estimated the staffing. The chef was out in the restaurant from time to time and was approachable - something that's always a good sign. Comparable to food I've had in NY, SF, London and elsewhere. I'll be back....

Cool or Unique Restaurants in Raleigh NC

fun place for lunch would be Calavera Empanada & Tequila Bar - great quirky Day of the Dead decor, great empanadas, including one sweet potato & black bean if I remember correctly. And the price is right... Also their Cilantro Lime salad is excellent.

Raleigh area Pancakes

Sorry, but went to Pam's Farmhouse for my much-desired pancakes today and was sorely disappointed. Big, yes, but dry - felt like eating a piece of cake, not the light fluffy pancakes of my dreams. Bigger is not always better... Did love the atmosphere though and will go back for the meat & 3 - biscuits good, loved the separate container of molasses. The hunt is still on for those pancakes....

Troy Mezze in Raleigh

Try their Manti - kind of a Turkish tortellini but smaller and served with greek style yogurt. Yum...Agree this place needs to be supported - very interesting food and vibe but hidden away a bit.

Weinberg's The Deli opened in North Raleigh

My bonafides are: Jewish, raised in Philadelphia with good deli, lived in NY for 15 years, LA for 3 - all great deli towns. Visited Weinberg's today - had the Ruben and the Rachel (hot pastrami Ruben). The meats were very good - just fatty enough and well seasoned. They brought out a small plate of pickles & (YAY) pickled tomatoes; they had spicy brown mustard on the table in little crocks. All started out well. My one complaint - the macaroni salad I had with the Rachel was way too sweet and didn't have the traditional Jewish deli style seasonings. The offerings at the takeout counter included Kishka, Sweet Noodle Kugel, Knishes (but sadly not liver knishes). Will have to try those next time but did take home some whitefish salad for this weekend's bagels. Looking forward to return visit to try the hot brisket sandwich and the chopped liver. Will report then.

Authentic Dumplings finally arrive in Triangle area!

Had some Chirba Chirba dumplings at the Raleigh food truck event last month and agree they were very good. I lived in NY for 15 years where I frequently went to Chinatown for dim sum and think I can appreciate good dumplings when I taste them. Can't imagine there aren't any other good ones to be had in this area (have only lived here a brief time). Any suggestions?

What is great and near the Raleigh Art Museum?

Assuming you've got a car, just a few minutes away is Glenwood Grill or Hereghty's both in the same small center at the corner of Oberlin and Glenwood. Had dinner at Glenwood Grill recently and it was excellent - Southern caesar salad had grit cakes instead of croutons. It was to die for. Hereghty's is a French bakery/bistro with wonderful pastries and sandwiches. Let us know where you ended up. Neomonde always good if you want something Middle Eastern, but not much atmosphere there.
