Sunday Brunch in LA

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys!

As I mentioned above, friends from Irvine are driving up, so Saddle Peak may be too far. Scarpetta also looks interesting. A bit pricey, but may be worth the extra cash.

And how could I forget Dim Sum! Thanks wienermobile! I think we're going for a more traditional brunch setting this time, but I will have to go for Dim Sum sometime VERY soon. You guys think the Dim Sum at Sea Harbour is the best? (I'm sure there are tons of other threads about Dim Sum, so I will research it a bit later on).

Sunday Brunch in LA

Cool, so I've narrowed it down to FIG between the two. Some friends are driving up from Irvine, so Saddle Peak may be too far for them.

And I'm not from Montreal, but have been living there for the past 4 years for school. I just graduated and moved to LA. And I, just like you, miss the food a lot, and on a student's budget, could not afford the fine dining scene either. But I discovered that some of the best foods are the cheapest! So I don't think we missed out on too much. I do miss the montreal smoked meats though. I would kill for a Dunn's or Schwartz's sandwich right now!

Sunday Brunch in LA

Thanks for the info. I just realized that I forgot t to mention where I am, and your guess is right. I'm on the Westside, but like I said, I don't mind a bit of a trip if the food is really worth it.

Based on the info you gave me, I'm leaning towards FIG. I'll probably have to return during the evening to sample the variety, but it also looks pretty good for brunch.

Farmshop also looks pretty interesting. I'll have to look into it. How does it compare to FIG? I'm getting the same 'seasonal, farm-fresh, locally produced' vibe from both their menu's, so I was wondering if they're similar in terms of quality and taste.

Sunday Brunch in LA

I'm new to the area, and I'm looking for a place that serves a good Sunday brunch. I've done a bit of digging around on some outdated threads, and came up with a couple of options.

Saddle Peak Lodge -- a bit far away, but worth the drive if it really stands above the rest
Fig Restaurant in the Fairmont Hotel
Zengo, which could be interesting
And maybe 26 Beach

I found these recs from some old threads, so I don't know if anything has changed with the restaurants. Am I missing anything or is there any one place that is much better than the rest?

Thanks for all your help!

Where can I find Golden Cockerel Ginger Beer???

I'll definitely have to give Grace a try. The spicier the better for me!

I also went to Fou D'Ici today and got a couple Bull's Heads. They only sell them individually though, and they are pretty expensive (about 2.69 each) so I could only get a couple. It is very good. Not too spicy right off the bat, but it does have a very good warming aftertaste that I really like.

Where can I find Golden Cockerel Ginger Beer???

Porker, I think what Peaches to Poutine was referring to was the third line of your last post, where you said other places the OP mentioned. I spoke about going to Provigo to get the Golden Cockerel, so I think that's where the confusion arose.

I'm also gonna check out maxi and super c, and some of the more ethnic places, and report back. Is there any input on some of the other ginger beers mentioned, such as Old Tyme or D&G Jamaican Ginger Beer? Do they have the same gingery spicyness that I am looking for?

Where can I find Golden Cockerel Ginger Beer???

I'll give them a call tomorrow, and might have to pick up a 4 pack if it's not too costly. I'm glad you found out that they were selling in Montreal. The company's website doesn't mention anything about this.

Where can I find Golden Cockerel Ginger Beer???

Do the drinks mentioned above have the same spicy/gingery taste that golden cockerel has? The only other ginger drink I've had is Reed's Original Ginger Brew, and that was disappointingly un-gingery. If they taste similar, I don't mind buying them; its not the brand I'm after, but rather the taste. And I'll definitely try some Bull's Head if I can buy it in bulk.

P.S. I just checked, and they don't sell Bulls Head in Montreal yet. I'm gonna have to wait till I can leave the city.

Where can I find Golden Cockerel Ginger Beer???

I have been searching high and low for this soda. I have been horribly disappointed by other ginger ales in the past, and when I finally happened to stumble across this one in Provigo, it was gone two weeks later. This was over a year ago, and I have been searching ever since, but with no luck.

So I am hoping anybody out there can tell me where I can find this soda or something similar. I've gone over Peaches to Poutine's post here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/787395, but the website listed is out of stock and the thread seems to have died out, so I am making a new one in hopes of finding some more ginger beer! Thanks for the help guys.

Lunch in Old Montreal

Hi,

I have some family in town for the weekend and they have one day free for lunch in Old Montreal. I was wondering if there is one place down there that they cannot miss. I have heard that DNA, T, F, and Club Chasse et Peche all have lunch specials. Is there one place out of these that stands out among the rest, or am I missing someplace? Thanks for the input.

Best Taco In LA

What I was envisioning was a soft taco with a corn tortilla shell. The inside doesn't really matter, but my favorite is always some good pork carnitas. Does this clarify a bit?

Best Taco In LA

I'm visiting my cousin Westwood over the weekend, and coming from Canada, I don't get much good Mexican food. So I am searching for the absolute BEST taco in the area. Gluten free is a must because my cousin has an allergy, but I was thinking if it was a real taco, they would use corn tortillas instead of flour ones. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Graduation Dinner

Thanks for the suggestions. I think its going to be DNA. Do you guys know if they serve anything gluten free?

Graduation Dinner

I am graduating university in 3 days, and my parents are coming. This is finally my opportunity to eat at all the restaurants I wanted to try but couldn't on my student budget. Unfortunately I only have one night free to have dinner with them, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Au Pied is off limits because someone dining has a heart condition. But I was thinking of something along the lines of Le Club Chasse et Peche. I have never been, but have heard great things. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Cheese fondue in or around MTL?

the only place I've ever been to that has fondue is called Pasta Tella on Stanley (or maybe Drummond) near Sherbrooke. Its a small Swiss place that does a decent fondue.

Ground Beef Safety [split from Quebec]

so, does anybody know the law in Quebec?

Where can I find a restaurant that cooks rare burgers?

I have always been weary to try this restaurant because it is in between two strip clubs (I know this is a horrible excuse, but for some reason it just creeped me out). But I will have to get past my prejudices in the name of the rare burger. I will try it soon. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ground Beef Safety [split from Quebec]

I have no clue if this is actually the law. This is what the chef at gourmet burger told me when I was trying to convince him to cook me a rare burger. So don't take my word for it.

But I do know most places refuse to cook a rare burger because it is the law in Quebec. I am just not sure about the grind your own meat part.

Where can I find a restaurant that cooks rare burgers?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to try some of them out.

I was planning on cooking burgers myself, but I live in an apartment building that doesn't allow us to have a bbq on the balcony. I could always fry them, but it's just not the same ( and I don't have any cast iron cookware). And as I don't have access to a car, it's hard to get to a butcher. Hence the search for the restaurants.

Montreal May 2011 Visit...(need recommendations)

I prefer Romados for a chicken lunch. I think its 10 times as delicious and pretty close by Coco Rico's. But that's just my opinion.

Where can I find a restaurant that cooks rare burgers?

I would say between medium rare and rare. I want a bloody, but not raw. I know this is not too clear, but I hope this helps clarify a bit.

Also, I have come close at gourmet burger, but I think it mostly depends on the chef and who's working the cash (as with most restaurants). If they are in a good mood, they will make a burger slightly pink. I have heard good things about Burger De Ville, and I definitely plan on trying it soon.

Where can I find a restaurant that cooks rare burgers?

I have been looking for a restaurant that will cook a burger with a pink to red inside for me. I have been on the search for quite a while now, and have come up empty handed. I think the law in Quebec is the restaurant is allowed to serve you a rare burger if they grind their own beef in house (but I'm not sure about this). Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the suggestions. Believe it or not, I have never been to any of those restaurants, as I am fairly new to the area. Can you recommend one that stands above the rest? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Easter Brunch/Dinner

Me and my friend want to go out for a nice Easter brunch (or possibly dinner) tomorrow, and we were wondering if there were any good suggestions. We live in downtown (McGill area) and don't have access to a car, but are not opposed to a quick metro or bus ride. It will have to be fairly close though, and something that can be done on a student's budget (a student who wants to splurge a bit for a special occasion). Thanks guys.

New lebanese

I've been looking for an authentic and delicious Lebanese restaurant for the longest time now! The closest I've come to finding it was at Petit Alep, but I'll have to give this place a try (maybe after finals are done)! thanks for the post!
