Did Your Mom Repeatedly Cook a Dish You Despised?

You feel the need to capitalize because it's an acronym Shoulder Pork (H)AM. I had it once after coming home from my honemoon in Hawaii in 1988 and hearing about how popular it was there. Haven't had it since, not a hater, just not a fan, but I drive past the plant in Austin a couple times a year and think aboot it.

What to drink while eating raw oysters

hoppy,
Sounds like it was a great combo of fluids. I like a Bloody Mary shooter as mentioned below, maybe it's just how good it looks!

ISO pizza - Des Moines

Hilltop on Hubbel & E 29th? has been around forever and is pretty good. The new owners brightened it up, but kept the same menu and recipes. Chuck's, as mentioned, is one of my faves, too. Don't know if La Pizza House E14th south of the river is open or closed again, but they used to be one of the best.. If ever in Valley Jct gotta hit the Tavern (2nd loc further west, too).

Good Luck!!

DARDEN Restaurants -- Interesting "Inside" Look

Great article, thanks for sharing. I like RL & OG for what they are, and don't complain that I was forced, coerced, held at gun-point to eat there. I appreciate that someone INVITED me to dine out, but DO NOT like to wait; hence I haven't been to either in years. The "reservations" model they are looking at could solve that.

Which animal have you eaten every single part of?

That's the only one for me. 16 yrs old & at a dance w/my GF in 1981. She dumped me at the dance. Crying on my mommy's shoulder she said "there are other fish in the sea". Still makes me & mom laugh...

Hu Hot

Been there a few times & enjoyed it. I wish the ingredients on their website were available at all locations...(fake crab was the only seafood option). Still good, but I think BD's or a local joint are better. Still, I'd eat there anytime someone suggested it.

Have to go to awful restaurant tonight--what should I order?

Ipse,
The dude abides.
Sorry to hijack the post, but I REALLY would like to know how BAD it was. There was one in DSM, but closed years ago when the over-expanded & I was never INVITED to eat there, but would have been honored to try a new Chain.

So, please tell us how awful your dreadful, swimming in grease dinner was...I love it when people are forced, coerced, held at gunpoint to eat somewhere they already hate even though they've never been there. Why not just say you were "invited" and want advice on what to order? BTW, never eaten there, so I actually am curious how bad it was.

#1 Marzetti
#2 Marie's
I've seen, but never had Ken's; time to try it. Dorothy Lynch is more Russian, thinner and a similar, but different take on it...don't know if that made sense...but I like it.

msp to duluth to the canadian border..road trip recco requests

MSP:
Never been to this place, but on my list; that Tiki bar on that's been on a lot of shows: Psycho Suzi's.
Duluth:
-Grandma's: Yea, I know it's pretty much a chain now, but dang those onion rings are awesome (especially on the roof watching the bridge do its thing), with a frothy adult beverage.
-Fitger's Bewhouse: Never had a bad meal there.
Two Harbors area:
-Betty's pies. I have driven past and had to turn around way too many times.
Lutsen area:
-Lutsen Lodge for breakfast: The wild rice pancakes are...ummm...wildly good.
Grand Marais:
-My Sister's Place: They're darned proud that A Zimmern ate there, but; the pizza was pretty good.
Sven & Ollie's: Another pizza place, mostly slices and a long line.
I'm not getting up there this summer (darn)! Enjoy!

Purple Asparagus, sweet?

I saw some today at my local chain. It was $6/lb. vs. $3/lb. for green. I bought green, and after seeing the rsponses, I likely won't buy it anytime soon. Thanks for the timely question.

what foods does your city have that mine doesn't?

Des Moines area;
Taylor's Maid-rites in Marshalltown, Pella Dutch letters & ring bologna, AE cottage cheese, dips, sour cream, etc. (I ship to my sis in Vegas), Grimes sweet corn. Maytag bleu from the farm-store in Newton.

IMO, the best local is Graziano Brother's Itailian sausage and South Union Bread.

Mustard all around-What is your favorite type or do you make your own.

Hi,
Mine is Colman's from England, either dry or prepared. Is that the same as the Coleman's I've seen on this site? Is it a spelling malfunction, or is there another called Coleman's?
Thanks,

One Sandwich for Every American City

Hi,
I live in DSM and was in Indy last weekend for Pole Day at the track. As I understand it, the 'loin was an evolution of a schnitzel from German immigrants. Iowa does have a huge following, tho. Check out http://des-loines.blogspot.com/ for the tour of Iowa. Loins at the track are good, but that might just be the ambiance of the 100th anniversary. BTW, we did dine at St Elmo's Sat night.

Ultimate Sandwich in Des Moines

My stepson was there for the taping (south-side regular) and he got the same sandwich. He said it was gross from the start and a few days later when he finished it, but since he's 19 and hungry I figured he would. I've had a few killers and loins, but I'm not a huge fan. I live in a north suburb, maybe that's why and don't desire to drive 20 miles for a gut bomb.
