Anchovies : Love it or hate it.

lOVE THEM, as one said diced up in spaghetti sauce, on pizza, and good italian restaurants used to offer them on antipasto salad.

Moivy, he actually had a pretty good route in Beverly Hills, worked out of the distribution center on La Ciegna?? where Montgomery Wards took over the site, used to go into the lobby and you could drink all the milk, buttermilk, or chocolate milk you could hold haha.

Venus, one night in Zucky's I saw a guy really shaking up a ketchup bottle and it went all over the guy in the booth behind him, they almost got in a fist fight. Another I saw Haystaks Calhoon(wrestler from the 60's, huge guy) ordered a very large plate of sandwiches and as the waItress brought them on a tray he was grabbing them off with both hands and shoved them in his mouth, haha quite a place.

Yes Moivy, my grandfather was a milkman for Adohr Farms. Adohr was Rhoda spelled backwards. Rhoda Ringe was the daughter of the Ringes who owned all of Malibu back in the late 1800's.

Does anyone else hate Bay Cities (venice)?

csh ?? did you mean subway bread is great? or the bread is like subway's? I think Bay Cities sandwich rolls are very good.

I walked through Chinatown almost every weekday for decades and ate there a couple of times, my rememberance was the food was very mediocre, but downtown businessmen found the bar area to have good strong drinks.

Remember these Restaurants?

I remember a place I think was called Mom's in around the late 60's that served beer.

Sam D, How did you peek into my mind?? You are absolutely right. The chili at nu-way was the best, La Barbara's incomparable, But the one I miss the most is Pickle Bills, sawdust on the floor and the best hot roast beef sandwiches with gravy. I cant duplicate the gravy. I had a post on Pickle Bills and his Grandson?? replied that they retired early 70's?? and moved to Saint George Utah, He said if he had the recipe he would open another Pickle Bills up there but no luck.

Chili Cheese Burritos (Chilitos) - They're Baaaaaaacccckkkkk!

It was ok, not great. $1.59 at the Camarillo CA location, small, In my not so humble opinion, overpriced by 59% should be on the dollar menu.

At what point does the price of a meal overcome value?

Clam: You may be right in some cases but in my experience like out here in Malibu you need a wheelbarrow of cash to pay for your meal and a magnifying glass to see it.

Pickle Bills

Thank you so much, that was my favorite restaurant, it seems like the good ones are mostly gone now. Would you have a recipe for that wonderful beef gravy and brisket?

What is your method to tenderize pork loin?

Pork today is not like pork in the 60's and early 70's when cooked you could cut it with a fork and it had flavor, it's much more lean now, used to be much more marbeling and flavor. I cant speak for a loin roast but boneless pork chops I run them through my hand crank tenerizer about 8 times and they come out tender.

range vs. cooktop

C Oliver, I'm glad you confirmed that all you need is to show your DD form 214 because in most cases Veterans do not have ID cards.

range vs. cooktop

We did a major kitchen remodel about 2 years ago, went with a Wolf gas rangetop 4 burner with a griddle and grill, and a Wolf electric double convection wall oven, couldn't be happier. Many professional cooks recommended an electric oven, yes expensive but as the old saying goes - long after the price is forgotten the quality is remembered.

Get some good rolls , thin slice the meat, and make Philli Cheesteak sandwiches.

Foods you wish the big 'fast-food' drive-through would offer.

I wish In-N-Out would offer a chili burger and a chicken burger.

Rangetops with griddle

We have a Wolf rangetop 4 burner with a griddle and grill. Although we have the grill you need a strong vent fan, if we were to do it over we would have probably gotton the 24" griddle rather than 12" griddle and 12" grill. We love the Wolf.

Buttermilk

They sure don't in Southern Calif.

Buttermilk

I've been looking for it for years in the west(California) with no luck. The last I remember was Arden Farms
in a churn type container, disapeared around the early '60s. Good luck. Where are you located?

Backup store bought gravy

I can't remember if it was Costco, Sams, or Fart and Sminal but this time of the year McCormac or Tone's comes out with a powdered Turkey(not poultry) gravy that is a good backup and actually smells like roasted Turkey.

Remodeling kitchen. Stove reccomendations?

We did this a little over a year ago, the research I did came up with a number of complaints about Viking's reliability and customer support, we went with Wolf and couldn't be happier.

Cold smoked salmon?

I constantly do cold smoked salmon in my Cookshack Amerique smoker. Did your neighbor soak it in maple syurp and some salt the night before?? After cold smoking I refrigrate it and later slice thin and use as you would Lox. No problem.

Remember these Restaurants?

I almoist forgot an good Australlian restaurant on Ventura Blvd. In Woodland hills called the Kangaroo Inn. probably disappeared in the 50's.
