Best Fried Rice in LA!!!
I like it too but I don't think that's butter...it's lard baby!
Mami's Tacos
Thanks for the heads up! Can you please describe a Juarenze Tamal? I've never heard of it... And do u have the address of Mami"s? Thanks!
Cassell's Burgers on 8th and Western
Very good USDA prime beef burger. Probably the best deal for one of these around. I just had a cheeseburger here last week after a 10 year hiatus and found it to be delicious...
Cousin in town from Minneapolis, where can we eat in Pasedena, California.....
Jullienne's is a great rec and they do have tables inside too but if it's warm the patio is the best.
The Slaw Dogs, Pasadena
Hey their burgers are very good too! Gotta love this place great dogs and burgers and nice owner.
Hot n' spicy Chinese food in San Gabriel Valley?
There's a great new sichuan restaurant in San Gabriel on the NE corner of the intersection of San Gabriel Blvd and Las Tunas. It's called New Chong Qing and it's very good and very hot! Check it.
Soups in the SGV - recommendations, favorites, etc.
Pasha recently added a great homemade yellow lentil soup. Very homemade tasting...
Their rotisserie chicken, chicken kebabs and babaganoush are also very good!

Upcoming trip: most LA Research done & just looking for a bit of input..
Agree re: Phillipe's: I like it but it's like Pink's: The food is ok but not worth the hassle generally (lines etc.) If you want the phillipe's historical experience with a great french dip meal and a nicer atmosphere and table go to its long time rival: Cole's french dip on 6th st. Try the bourbon pecan pie for dessert if you have room.

Re: san gabriel valley leg of trip: There are 3 restaurants in the sgv(near huntington) that are truly unique in the US in my humble opinion: Chong Qing for great sichuan food at 100 San Gabriel Blvd. San Gabriel, CA (there are more than one Chong Qing). Din Tai Fun in Arcadia for the best xlb (this place is a small chain from Japan/Taiwan and is world class. Lastly is the best upscale mexican in LA: Babita in San Gabriel. Oh and Moles la Tia is great too(not only for fresh good food but their horchata is also amazing(Much better than the usual). I believe these are the most memorable places in the SGV. While MLV and others are pretty good food...I don't think you'll find anything uniquely good about them. Good luck and happy holidays in LA!
...anyone tried yet? New ChongQing in SG.
In city of San Gabriel corner of San Gabriel Blvd and Las Tunas. Specializes in Hot Pot. Very Busy last night and looks pretty clean and authentic. Maybe Taiwanese style Sichuan? Sorry if I missed a post but my board search came up empty. Anyone?

coconut ice cream
I know you asked for "Ice Cream shops" but if you're willing to buy a pint or gallon, this place imports some great chunky coconut ice cream from Thailand:

What the ?*#$!...... No side au jus at Phillipe's?
Good news, Midlife: Just order it to TO GO with au jus on the side. One of the order takers told me that they'll only serve it on the side with a to go order. Then find yourself a table and chow down: they don't care where you eat it, trust me, that's how I do it everytime because I don't like a pre-dipped sandwich(unless it's Chicago Italian beef).
Looking for something new & inventive
Is this South Bay:
Al-Watan
13619 Inglewood Ave
Hawthorne, CA 90250-5610
Phone: (310) 644-6395 ???
Al Watan is delicious Pakistani food in a no frills setting. Everything is good here, so I usually just order the special.
BBQ - Where to find the best in LA?
I have to second that Greece's emotion. Greece sold it to some great people(who re-named it "NYC" or "NY" BBQ) and he taught them his magic before he left. The ribs maybe even better than before and the sides are truly outstanding as well. BYOB or grab whatever's on sale at the liquor store in same strip mall.
Quick Trip- what do you think?
3 suggestions in SR:
Thai food at Jhanthong Banbua(some of the best Thai food I've had in US)
Equus: Fantastic upscale California/Napa style (outstanding lamb chop)
Le Gare: old school French
Aram's Cafe, Petaluma - Great Shawarma
I used to live in Petaluma and Aram's was and still is my favorite there. Try the falafel pita. It is righteous.
Lunch on Sawtelle today?
Blue Marlin is always good and reasonably priced; esp. if you like sea urchin (uni spaghetti or risotto).
Father's Office, What's the big deal?
I'm not a fan of Yard House food. But they do have some good Belgian beers like Gulden Draak, Leffe, Delerium Tremens etc. If you go during happy hour all beers are 1/2 price (iirc); this value is tough to beat.
The only thing I like to eat here is the French onion soup. Nice soup comes w/ a large hunk of bread and butter. I believe happy hour is 3pm-6pm.
best fish & chips
Try kings head. It is breaded. But be warned...it can be either THE BEST or THE WORST in LA depending on your luck. My experience is about 9 times the best and 2 or 3 times the worst.
Definitely worth a try. If it comes out over cooked, send it back.
Who's got the best Ma Po Tofu?
Servorg is money! Also:
Chungking(Chongqing)
1000 San Gabriel Blvd
San Gabriel
Just a few blocks North of the 10.
This place ROCKS! Order Mapo Doufu and Chongqing chicken.
