The Oak Table in Columbia SC

Since I usually study up here and ask questions about new places, I figured that I ought to contribute as well. Just had supper at Oak Table.
I have always wanted to love Oak Table, but the food was never consistently good ( I thought Brunch was pretty consistent, but not dinner). I have tended to love Terra for its interesting seasonal use of local ingredients served with consistent excellence.
A new Chef has been in place at Oak Table for a month. He is down from the soon to close Seven Sows in Asheville. Dinner at Oak Table tonight was remarkably good. When we perused the menu, we noticed a few of the old standbys, but most of the menu is showed the hand of someone else at the helm. Dishes took advantage of local produce, and were prepared simply and beautifully. The braised Lamb appetizer with morels and fava beans was incredibly tender and rich, The fresh spring flavors of the vegetables played against the richness of the lamb beautifully. Every plate that came to the table tonight was beautiful, delicious, and served at the appropriate temperature.
I look forward to returning in hopes of another incredibly delicious meal.

Venice at Christmas

Hello PBSF. I was surprised at the choices we had . I had rather assumed that much of out time would be spent at less than satisfactory places that catered solely to tourists, but that was far from the case. There were several places that I wanted to eat that we closed, but I was quite pleased at the choices that we did have. We dined at Osteria Da Fiore. It was fantastic.

Venice at Christmas

Thank you all for all your assistance. We have returned from a great trip full of wonderful meals. I thought I would report back in, though the suggestions were so helpful, that we went to few places not already mentioned. On Christmas Eve, we cooked in our apartment after a fantastic morning at the Rialto Market. L'Anice Stellato was open for their regular schedule despite the holidays. It was delicious, well served and convivial. The next night we had supper at Fiaschetteria Toscana. Our waiter Roberto was the soul of charm. He deftly steered us through the menu , at times even suggesting we change our order to some other dish or wine he thought better. The food was delicious, simply prepared and beautifully served. It was so good that upon leaving, we made reservations for an evening to follow, which was equally delightful. Il Ridotto was quite good, the plates and flavors were assembled with care and the ingrediants were delicious. The food there did not strike me as quite as simple as the other meals we had in Venice. It was a very good meal, but for some reason, probably due to being tired from the flights over, it was not quite satisfying as our other choices. Restaurante da Fiore was a treat. Making reservations there was rather dificult. Problems with fax machines not being turned on, untimely responses and such had me ready to throw in the towel on dining there, but I am so glad that I did not. It was a superb meal in a lovely intimate space. All of these were mentioned,by our fellow chowhounds, so I fear I have added little to the community. We did go a couple of places for lunch that were quite good though. AquaPazzo appears to focus on the food of southern Italy. It was delicious place for lunch. Another was the tiny La Furatola in the Dorsoduro. The food there was excellent. Thanks to all of you for your help.

Hey Tzonis
Let us know how you find it. As I said it is not absolutely traditional BBQ. I must admit that I cringe at some if the menu items which feature cheese on the pork, but Ijust get the plain neat on a bun. I have found the meat to be very good. How did you find Bourbon? I went once when they had just opened, so I need to get back now that they have been open a while.

Florence Christmastime

Around ten of us will be in Florence from December 23-December 29. I looked on past posts about where might be suggested for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but they appear to be years old. Can anyone offer me any guidance? Price is not important. I imagine that big hotels dining rooms may be open, but we do not tend to frequent these. I would sure appreciate any help.

Venice at Christmas

Nine of us are going to spend ten days at Christmas in Venice and the vicinity.
There are excellent suggestions here. Thanks for them. I am wondering if anyone can suggest decent places that might be open for Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We will be renting a house, so we could cook if it came down to it. I hear that some places close from the 23-30th. I know that hotel dining rooms will be open, but we do not tend to frequent those. I appreciate any advice.

Hey Few.
I have confirmed with Southern Belly that they are open on Sunday as Facebook indicates. It was a tremendous personal sacrifice to force myself to go there for lunch and choke down one of their sandwiches, but I did it. Sometimes you just have to take one for the team.

Hey Few
Yeah, I know it seems very strange not to put their hours on their website, but then, that does not really strike me as all that odd for this place.
I have eaten there on Sundays.
Their Facebook page lists their hours on Sunday as 11:30 to 3:30.
That said, It never hurts to give them a call to make sure.
Happy eating, and thanks for starting a thread here!

Hey Cpt Wafer.
I must thank you very much!
We made the trek out to Noahs Pizza based on your mention of it in this conversation. Delicious! We love the pizza at Gio's and at Cafe Caturra. Both are quite tasty, but the pizza at Noah's may be even better, The styles are so different that it is hard to compare, but we thought that the pizza at Noah's is damn close to what one gets in Naples.
I just wish it were near my house downtown!
Thanks again!

Danna
I must agree with you that Charleston has some tremendous places and we love to go there. I love McCrady's, Fig, MacIntosh, Butcher and Bee, The Grocery, Cru Cafe. Nevertheless, I must still respectfully argue that while Columbia cannot match Charleston for the number and variety of great places, it has a community of chefs who are doing great work. I neglected to mention it, earlier, but I have had meals at Terra which rival my best meals in Charleston.
What are some of your favorites there? I am always glad to go on dining expedition regardless of where.

Also:
I can certainly second the recommendation of Noah's Pizza.
Also, please forgive the several misspellings in my earlier post. It will not longer let me edit it to fix them

Wow. Very harsh appraisals of Columbia.
No, Cola is not foodie haven like Asheville, but there are some solid choices. Motor Supply in the Vista is open on Sunday and does a great job of sourcing locally. Moreover there bartenders do an awesome job of using fresh berries, herb and small batch mixers for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Oak Table downtown is open during the day on Sunday and also serves delicious food. I am a devout omnivore, but The Good Life is a raw food vegan restaurant downtown that I think is extremely tasty, though the service can be spotty. It also is open on Sunday. There are probably other great options farther from downtown, but these are all worth a visit. Making BBQ suggestions in this area is likely to bring harsh criticism down on one's head, but I really like Southern Belly. Pulled pork is all they do, but they do it well. Many may scream at the unconventional nature of some of their pulled pork sandwich offerings, but they are tasty! The place has an appealing roadhouse-like feel. Its location under a railroad trestle adds to the ambiance. Columbia has other great spots like Gio's and Cellar on Greene, but many of Columbia's good places are closed on Sunday.

Sorry:
At the last minute our plans changed and we did not end up going to Athens, just Columbia and Charleston. I hope to get down there soon and will report in afterward. Thanks for all your great help!

Thank you all! Columbia was great. Terra was a hit. Service and food and setting all worked well. Quail were delicious. Flounder was perfect. Someone had tge Lam-Mac, something I never would have ordered, but wish I had, brilliant. Oak Table was great. Perfectly cooked flounder. Bone marrow was a treat that I have noticed popping up on menus recently. The Frisbee salad was fantastic. The smoked panna cotta with honey was inspired. Cafe Strudel was fine, not great. The signature has browns were fine, not great. Crispiness would have moved them into the stellar category. Thanks to all. We are headed to Charleston now. Any suggestions for Sunday lunch?

Thanks Carolinadawg. I had done a search on Athens and all I found was a post on BBQ and one from 2010. I get plenty of good BBQ here in NC and things may have changed since 2010, so i thought I would ask. I have only been to 5 and 10. I will check out the others you suggest. I appreciate the suggestions.

4505 Chicharrones

I cannot stop yearning for the 4505 meats chicharrones at the Ferry building farmers market. Even though North Carolina prides itself on its pig worship I can find none here that rival the "crispity clouds of porkoliciousness" that 4505 meats produces. They are not allowed to ship them. I know that it sound ridiculous, but does anyone know of a person or service that will pick some up at the farmers market and ship them to me in North Carolina? Thanks.
