La Brasserie

Thank you all very much for all the great suggestions. We now have a list to work with over the next several months.

We have had brunch at both the Provences and I really like their French toast. Must go back for dinner. And, chocolate mouse, grayelf - that in itself would be reason to try Bistro Bistrot.

Thanks again.

La Brasserie

Blimey! I've really let myself in for it now, haven't I - using the word "excellent" on Chowhound!. You have to understand that we are not "foodies", and perhaps our standards are somewhat lower than the regulars on Chowhound (actually, no "perhaps" about it). So, please be aware of that in reading further (i.e., that we are more easily pleased).

They started out with a small bread platter. The baguette was good, although the crust (best part for me) was not as "crusty" as others I have had. However, H really liked the herbed bread.

Then, I had the beet, goat cheese, etc. salad. I liked the dressing (rather tart) and I really liked the fact that the salad was not drenched in it. There was just enough for flavour.

H. had the halibut special and found the halibut to be tender and moist. I had the chicken and frites. The chicken was also tender and moist and I really liked the frites. Perhaps they were "double-cooked" (is that what they do with frites?). I didn't much care for the cabbage underneath, but that's OK.

For dessert, we had the apple/raisin crumble. It was quite sweet, and just enough to satisfy.

On the whole, it was a very simply dinner, but we really enjoyed it. Service was also very good, without being obtrusive.

Going to La Brasserie is part of a search on our part for French restaurants to remind us of our trip to Paris a little while ago. We tried the crepe place on Jervis a couple of months ago and, for a variey of reasons, were disappointed (think they've changed hands). We tried Les Faux Bourgeois last month and would go back. Now we've been to La Brasserie and enjoyed our meal there. If anyone has any other favourites (mid-range, not like Le Crocodile, for example), we'd be happy to hear about them.

La Brasserie

Thank you all for responding. We did go last night. We were there before 5:30PM and left just after 6:30 PM. At no time was there a line-up and, in fact, there were a few empty tables when we left. I think that this was probably due to it being a nice evening and many people not having yet turned their thoughts to eating. (We saw lots of people on the sidewalk outside purposefully heading somewhere.) I suspect that situation would have been quite different had it been dark and rainy. The meal was excellent, by the way.

La Brasserie

I understand from their website that La Brasserie on Davie does not take reservations. We are thinking of going there for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant opens at 5:00 PM, but, due to another commitment, we cannot arrive much before 5:30 PM. Is this a restaurant (like Vij's where we go occasionally) where you really have to be in line before it opens to be part of the first sitting, or will a 5:30 PM arrival probably be OK (on a Saturday)? Tx.

Anatolia's Gate - Still Open?

Thank you both very much. I managed to reach them today. All is well and we are looking forward to our meal.

Anatolia's Gate - Still Open?

I've been charged with making a dinner reservation at Anatolia's Gate for this weekend. However, each time I call, I get a recorded message saying "extension 604-525-2519 is not available to take your call". Does anyone know whether the restaurant is still open? Unfortunately, I live in a very different part of the Metro Vancouver area and cannot go by to check it out beforehand. Anyone else had difficulty in contacting them recently? (The dinner is being scheduled at my recommendation based upon good feedback on Chowhound. Don't want to have "egg on my face" by everyone arriving to closed premises.) Thanks very much.

Good Crepe Restaurant?

Is there a restaurant in Metro Vancouver that serves good crepes? There used to be one in the West End many years ago (on Thurlow, I think), but that is long gone. We did try the one on Jervis and it wasn't bad. However, it seemed to have changed hands and the lyrics to the music being played appeared to be Spanish rather than French.
