Hospital Food----My how it's changed>>>For the better

There is use to be a Hosptial about 3 blocks from my parents grwoing up. The cafeteria food was all cooked by older lady's that tood tremendous pride in thier meals. ( really appreiciate it now looking back) ..

All during summer break we would make numerous lunch trips to the cafeteria. It was SOOO Cheap and Good. . I am talking maybe 3.50 for a Hamburger Fries Drinka and desert. Fast Food coulnd't even compare.

Now looking back its so werid the Hospital Cafe. was a huge part of my childhood HAHA

That hosptial is now closed and while the new ones food are not bad.. .they are no where near what we had growig up...

Bagleman.. that menu sounds better than most Restaruants ..

Need couple of recs for drinks and apps on E Carson St (Pittsburgh)

Piper's is a awesome choice... ( my fault for neglecting it) Bar can get croweded, great bar tenders always up on what that have.. ..

Gandy Dancer is awesome --very board walk empire -ish. (ok might regret this dorky statemnet, but great date place none the less)

Mallorca is not one of my fav's. People love i just think its ok. I spent a TON of money there and left kind of disapointed.

North Chinese Dream.?.. Litteraly still think it didn't happen

The area is beautiful...Across the street is Mirror Lake.(Ithink a camp site)... The area in general is VERY well kept, not back woods middle of no where, like retired doctor middle of nowhere. I believe the owners a PHD for PITT, during the week.

North Chinese Dream.?.. Litteraly still think it didn't happen

So, I have been visiting my parents the last couple weekends and they told me they were going to a chinese restaruant up past Ligonier, PA .... My first question was .. WHY? We just vistted the smiling bannana leaf 2 days before. His answer HOMEADE NORTHERN CHINESE MEALS .. all from scratch. Hmmm , So i tagged along.

The Mountian Palace in Bolvair , PA ( I know it is not an everyday route for 95% of the popluation) ...

http://www.mountainpalace.net/

I must warn everyone , this was one of the strangest settings I have ever ate in. Picture a log cabin exterior ( more of a double wide trailer insides) about 4 Booths and One large kitchen table (either from kmart of goodwill) You are no more than 15 Ft from one side to another.. Mixed in the "dinning room" was about 100 art pieces all scattered about all over the place.

Two chinese women (mom and dau) make the food in what seemed to be pajamas and aprons.

We ordered the "dumplings' and (2) Hot Pots.

Dumplings are by far the star of the show. They are very very good, made on spot per order. and cheap..

My hot pot wasgood. > I got the hot chicken version. There was hardly any chicken in the pot, which was a disspointment. I understand now , the veggies, broth and noodles are the star.. but putting in maybe 1/4oz of chicken is an insult. I did like my Spicy broth and everythign else.. Not a huge fan of the non spicy version.

There was also a twice cooks pork special that imho was very good. all made from scratch .. EVERYTHING...

YOU WILL BE HERE FOR AT LEAST 2 hours..... I wanted to tell everyone that this is a cannot miss meal, but ... the location is a huge turnoff. I had a unforgetable expereicne with some great people and some amazing food...

FOR A FOOD PERSON (FOODIE) THIS WAS REAL COOL... but just not that practical. I do not want to put down this place what so ever...IT was great food with accomding people, just stuck in the middle of no where

Cure VS. Union Pig

I wrote that post in a semi meat (bbq) comma and was a happy guy. I actually went back again with my parents.. and while the service was once again spectacular .... they were not as impressed with the overall food as I was. This is a GREAT addition to the area and I hope his mobile food truck court works out well.

GREAT REVIEW by the way.. I really enjjoy the blog Burghfeed!

Cure VS. Union Pig

First, Thank you all for the bday wishes and much valued help means alot! So I still am not sure where I will end udp for my Birthday this weekend, however I jumped the gun and went to Union Pig and Chicken -- couldn't wait anymore. Here is my 2 cents for what ever its worth:

One of the most stand out qualities of the night was the SERVICE. I honestly have never felt as comfortable and welcomed as I did the other night. Everyone there seemed to be mesh perfectly together and new thier stuff top to bottom.

Our party bascily ordered the entire menu -- not too difficult if you have a couple people.

The Ribs were pretty darn good!!! I didn't taste bbq sauce but rather meat and flavor. They were cooked exactly how i life, however the fat and cartildege at times were a real turn off.

Brisket-- had a really really awesome outside crust, like ai never had before.. I felt the need to dip the brisket in with a sauce (all of which were good) Some parts seemed slightly dry others loved.

Pork Shoulder-- was my second fav there. Loved mixing it up with the sides. sauce or no sauce was very very good

THE FRIED CHICKEN was SO SO GOOD . I am a person who will eat the skin off of the chicken and then feed most of the chiken meat to the dog below me .. THe skin was the by far the most crispiest skin with so much good flavor I couldn't stop eating it. Not to mention the chicken still had flavor and moist beyond anything I ever had. REALLY STOLE THE SHOW IMHO

The sides all were good.. nothing was not made well. I had a rock and rye with maple and enjoyed it alot.. not into burbon

While in theory I like BBQ and did really have a great time @ Union.. I just don't think I am in BBQ as much as I really want to believe. Once I get my house in that area, I am looking forward to take out so very much.

Cure VS. Union Pig

Ok , So I know is a un-fair comparision in some ways, but need some opinions. My Birthday is this weekend and was fully set on trying out Union. However, The addition to some out of town guest caused a little stir in the pot.

Please add to what I konw ..

Union - No reservations. Picnic style seating, Do I have to sit at a table with others? It is more of a cafeteria set up , may I even say Family style set up, than I typicall sit down plated poritons?

Cure-- My main concern (ahem) are portions. The people the will join me Hate going to a place that you get presenation food for 28 bucks a plate. ( I will not weigh in my person thoughts on that ,just have to deal with it)

Please any comments for both places will make my choice a little more easy. Many Thanks as always

Tough one - Pittsburgh: Sunday night Graduation dinner. 2 foodies, 1 vegetarian, 2 cheap parents

The dreaded Sunday night dinners -- always rough! However, Church Brew is a solid choice, everythign I have ever ate thier has been pretty good. I also think it is a such a cool place inside, truely unique. It doens't get much conversation on this site but should. ( I assume you have never been)

I have never been to the "new" Legume, but they do a superb job of quality food. Thier menu changes a lot and quicky (at least use to) .. wouldn't rule out because of the ramp situation. However $$ can add up there .

Daily Specials for locals, and regulars only?! [from General Topics]

I do not think not ordering alcohol had much to do with them offering thier specials. My thoughts would be SERVER ERROR... or the restaurant coudl have a honor do not offer program in effect. So if you asked about specials , she would have to tell or , but if you didnt she won't offer them up...

Should I tip?

i woudl most certiainly TIP. If it does happnen to be a owner / partner deliverying the food; they will more and likley decline the extra money.

Delivering charges usually does not help the delivery person at all, just the establishment.

pittsburgh bachelor party food & drink

That is ALOT more people than I was thinking readign this post... I HIGHLY SUGGEST , that host(s) do a lot of planning.

THere is a Steak place in the Casino.. that is not uber expensive, but could be a solid choice. Depending on what they are loooking to do.. YOu could stay in the N. Shore couple decent spots to drink and act up in or about. Depending on the dates even a Pirates Game/ Tailgate coudl be cool -- cheap / and fun

"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE ... I really enjoyed all the replys and great to hear everyones point of view.

While I typcially agree that hitting on the staff is a bad move, for a lot of different reasons. I REALLY REALLY liked the "Sitting at the Bar" move.

As for this particular lady, I did manage to see her last weekend...She is a really nice girl and also had a nice boyfriend--hahah , but she does have a sister who is in culinary school!!! Doors open and close all the time

A ramp (wild leek) trip!

We have also had some very very warm weather week or so ago , that cause a lot of bloomage.

Thought you might want to also post under the gardening board... As those people might know more about the "ramp" scene.. seems most on this PA sub board are more restuarant / grocery oriented.

"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?

This was more of a general question than what I made it seem. This particular girl just made me want to really weigh the options between creep and suave--haha

I do agree with the notion that asking any person , especially waitress or bar tender, while they are working is a risky . Like everyone said , they are basicly paid to make you the customer happy.

I just never really heard a actual servers opinion on it until now and all seem to be on same page. Although, I would imagine some out there do welcome the attention ? (even though it doesn't seem like if from the responses so far)

Not to turn this into a relationship board, there is a huge chace I will see this girl outside of her work. Especially that we now know eachother so I won't be asking her out at work at least ;-)

"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?

Last weekend, I had a wonderful experience with a lovely little waitress!! She was not overly flirty (like the hot bartender in short shorts), but rather extremely knowledgable about food ( major turn on) Durring the couple hours at this place, came to find out we had ALOT of stuff in common.

Now everyone at the table immediately said, too bad she was our waitress you could of asked her out. They all proclaimed , there is nothign worse than a cusomter hitting on you or trying to ask you out. Needless to say I was really bummed out, but plan on going there next and really want to get some others opinions.

A ramp (wild leek) trip!

The last couple years I have seen Ramps really sprouting up at a lot more local western pa Restaurants. Unforntualty it is very hard to narrow down a when and where.... Good Luck with this trip, I would really like to get updates every so often or atleast a nice recap...

I remember as a little kid , eating ramps and my parents FREAKED OUT , thinkign I picked up something toxic. The Dr. must of been into food and said, "we'll the are only toxic if my wife cooks them for dinner" HHAHAH

Love hearing that story and I live about 35 min outside of the Pittsburgh, so they are all around

314 Pasta And Prime?

HAHAH.... I was going to try it for lunch this week, but the only option for lunch is Pasta... Which is not always a great option at 12 for me.

The steaks are well over 40+ , which for the area is expensive. I hope they do well, but pretty expensive for a "neighborhood" family destination (IMHO) ..

So while I know some probally really miss Notion ( thinking of Rodzilla if he is listening) has anyone tried the replacement.

I have drove and walked by and it never looks open... never see any sign of peple going in or out.

Also most of the reviews sites really have nothing to say about this place-

Pastured Eggs

Another thought you could pull a sorta of recon mission. Ask the "pushers" at the farmers market what farm the eggs came from .. and then contact the farm directly. More than likely they will sell direct to you ..

Pastured Eggs

This is not much help, but there use to be this AMISH farmer that came into Pittsburgh and sold Milk , Eggs, and some other stuff. Green Circle Farms , could possibly help you out or point you in right direction.

Just wonder, How much $ are the eggs at the markets??

Cowboyardee is on the right track.. we will need some more specifics.. South Side would prob be the best area , however, it depends on the types and preferences of people.

How to (and should I) raise poor chef skills to a restaurant owner?

I would give them another chance. There can 10000000 reasons a dish got screwed up..

My neighbor is a DIshwasher at a fairly high end place, when the cooks go out for a smoke or whatever-- he fills in.. the Kid to this day doesn't know how to make oil and vinegar dressing.
