NH's Kitchenette is another prime example of LC's predictability. Terrible.

Tea

thanks hala. lately, i've been hooked on peppermint, and given the 3-4 cups I consume per day, i want to see what i can do to reduce some costs while maintain freshness. I'll have a google of "aubut". I'm far from a tea connoisseur but intend to explore a variety of flavours over the winter season. thanks again.

Tea

@daiya - thanks. I don't have specific quantities in mind but judging by the price of some teas at the Atwater Market, I want to find a more attractive alternative.
@haggisboy - thanks for the referral. Will check C-S out.

Tea

Is it advisable to buy tea in bulk (fresh or bagged)? If so, where should one look?
Thanks for some advice.

Marathon Weekend 2011

Thank you again. You are all more than generous hounders. Unfortunately, I'll be leaving on Monday but I'll be coming up a few days earlier to check things out. Frontera Grill is at the top of my list so I will look into a booking asap. I'll digest your rec's over the weekend and put together a simple plan. I've been reading a number of positive reviews about The Aviary, what do you think? i.e drinks before dinner. Once again, thank you so much and see you at the starting gates!

Marathon Weekend 2011

@nsxtasy I can't thank you enough for your informative reply. Thank you very much. I'll be staying at the Sheraton (301 East North Water Street Chicago, IL 60611) over the weekend. I hope I'm able to sample some of your rec's from my hotel? I mean, i don't mind getting around the city so long as it doesn't break the bank.

It will be my first visit to Chicago so I'm adamant to leave with a thorough (local) tasting of the city's
offerings. Is the Signature Lounge a local fav. or more a tourist trap?

I'm quasi familiar the reputation of Frontera Grill but I worry it may be out of my budget. Is it really an experience not to be missed? If so, I'll reconsider.

Btw, are you familiar with any Vietnamese restos?

Thanks for the coffee rec. and wishes for the race.

I have no doubt that I will be well fueled for a PR.

Cheers.

Marathon Weekend 2011

Hi Hounders,

I will be visiting Chicago for 5 days in October and aim to explore Chicago through art, food, and local coffee shops. I've read over most of the threads here but with some many rec's, I've become disconnected. In keeping costs to a minimum, can anyone share a quick rec. list on "must eats", "dives", and "coffee shops" ? Is Uno or Giordano's the go-to for Deep Dish? Also, where is the most romantic spot for drinks, thinking with skyline view, Peninsula Hotel? Thanks very much for your feedback!

Thanks for the great dialogue hounders. Your commentary confirms my suspicions. I almost laughed when I read Joe Beef's 4 * review a few weeks back. Wasn't it predictable from the headline alone? It confirmed her "palling around" interest which I find so weak considering how difficult it is to make it in the business. No disrespect to JB but I hope someone removes her silver spoon asap. Whether she's weak in non-italian, Chinese or not, this I will have to see for myself. @wattacetti I never read the Gazoo apart from the weekend insert but I think this might come to a quick end if I'm awoken to another negative review.

Is LC respected among the foodie community in the city? I find her weekly write-ups extremely negative, predictable, and flat-out mundane. How long has she been writing for the Gazette? I wish the Gazette's editors would rotate the position every few years to inject a fresh culinary opinion to Gazette readers. 9/10 times S.Musgrave reviews are positive, so why can't LC find better samples to cover across the city? IMO, I think a number of regular chowhounders would do a better job.

great feedback hounders! thanks a mill. i just popped in to de Gascogne for a whole grain loaf. I would recommend a pass for whole grain lovers wanting a dark, dense, grainy bread. - much too light and fluffy IMO. Bon App!
