Big fatty meat- Best BBQ in Houston

I honestly don't get all the hate directed at Goode Company. Awful? I guess that's why they've managed to stay in business for over 30 years and why Jim and Levi Goode were nominated for the James Beard Award this year. I'll agree that there may be better brisket in Houston, but Goode's is good, and for an overall meal from start to finish, Goode Company is pretty exceptional. I can't think of another bbq joint in Houston that can compare to the variety of meat choices, the made-from-scratch sides, their fresh homemade lemonade, the fluffy jalapeno cheese bread and the justly famous pecan pie that you find at Goode's. And I prefer their sauce to any other in the city. Others tend to be too vinegary or pasty and overwhelm the meat.

Taquerias In Houston

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with Katy, but the most authentic tacos al pastor I've found in Houston have been at 100% Taquito, on 59-S near Buffalo Speedway. They'll even put the bits of pineapple on the tacos. El Taco Tote on Westheimer near Fountainview is also quite good for this particular specialty. For more varied regional fare, Pico's Mex-Mex on Bellaire is a great choice. You can find things like chiles enogadas, cochinita pibil, manchamanteles, as well as typical tex-mex offerings. For fine dining, check out Hugo's on Westheimer in the Montrose area.

Need a new Tex-Mex experience: what's your favorite in Houston?

I live in Montrose, and there are some good Mexican restaurants around here, but when I want a real gooey, cheesey Tex-Mex enchilada fix, I go to La Hacienda, way out west on Memorial, past Dairy Ashford. I love their Enchiladas Verdes, or the creamy Enchiladas Suizas, and their seafood enchiladas are also top notch. I think they usually come with charro beans, but I always get refried beans. I never get fajitas either, so I can't vouch for those. The enchiladas are the thing...
