Kaffir lime leaves?

My green curry is just not the same without the Kaffir lime leaf aromatics. I was able to get them at Russo's for a little while, but not anymore! Has anyone seen them?

products dropped from stock by trader joe's

I gave up getting hooked on Trader Joes items a long time ago, when they would continually stop stocking my favorite things, including the best artichoke tortellini (non-dairy filling, it was just artichoke and spices) that I've ever had and lived on for about 6 months before it disappeared. God help me if they don't keep the gnocchi sorrentina!

Delirium Tremens on tap?

Marty's on the corner of Harvard and Comm in Allston sells Delirium Tremens as well as an excellent selection of other international and yummy beers. Love the pink elephants!

30th birthday celebration...

I'm looking for a lounge place where a larger group of people can hang out, drink and celebrate that we are getting old. Something not too upscale but not a dive either. It would be an after dinner kind of thing, although snacks are always good! Any suggestions?

Fresh Mangosteen?

So I saw the article in the NY Times about how the ban was lifted and fresh mangosteens are now being imported to the US. Has anyone seen them being sold anywhere? My whole foods didn't have a clue what I was talking about. It sounded delicious and I love trying new fruits!

Best cook-at-home veggie burgers? [moved from Boston board]

not being an official veggie, I don't know if this counts, but gardenburger has a chipotle black bean burger than is really good, and I usually don't eat veggie burgers! Top with some cheese and a nice mustard/mayo combo it's quite the tasty dinner!

KOSHER FOODS

Unfortunately, even though there is a huge Kosher community, no one has bothered to open up a fancy kosher restaurant. I wish they would, many of the business guys in my office keep kosher and we always have to cater in for dinners.

Depending on just how strict your guests are, you may want to do a catered in dinner. You can set a nice table with plastics... a little cheesy but it may be nice. I believe the Butcherie may also have prepared foods. Our office uses Milk Street Cafe and Catering by Andrew!

Sorry!

Restaurant Week(s): March, 2008. Where are YOU going?

Did Azure Tues night and it was good, but not fantastic... it was what I expected. Got to check out Grotto tonight and WOW! all I have to say is Gnocchi with short ribs. The gnocchi wasn't the best I've had but they were soft and melted in my mouth, barely a chew. The short rib had been cooked to perfection, it really did melt in my mouth. The mild combination of flavors, nicely seasoned, no overkill on salt as most places do, just enough gorgonzola to get a taste without being overpowering... I was in heaven. The portions were NOT expected, I had to have a doggy-bag, it was just too much! The atmosphere is warm and cozy, service well done and very friendly. Without a doubt an excellent RW experience and now a top place on my list for special occasions. Anyone know what olive oil they use for dipping the bread? It was addictive!

Tipping and delivery charges [moved from Boston board]

Now that Super Fusion has changed from regular delivery to Night Owl only there is a $4 delivery charge on top of a $15 minimum. No longer my nice friendly delivery driver who I am happy to tip because he would be at my door within about 20-30 min.

So I ask... What exactly is delivery charge? Is it a tip? They ask for tips when online ordering regardless, do I have to tip on top of the charge? No one I know seems to have any answers. Do the delivery people get wages or just tips? Who pays for their gas? Is that what the charge is for?

On a happy note, I'm doing take-out more often just to avoid the overage of charges and get some exercise!

Privus in Allston?

I finally made it to Privus tonight. Overall.... pretty disappointing. Their menu is incredible and I have to say that their maki combinations were on the more unique side, I mean the use of mozzarella and pepper jack cheese in Japanese food?
I had the Kinuta with tuna which was really good. The thick tuna was perfect texture and taste and a beautiful pink.It was the right balance with the daikon (I wish there were more maki made with daikon as the wrapper, it gives such a fresh light feeling!). I would have preferred more avocado, it seemed pretty stingy on that end. I also had Bob's maki, which.... while good, fell a little short. It was too mushy and needed a firmer crunch than stale tempura flake. I do admit that the portion was bigger than normal, although for $12 a roll, it had better be pretty amazing.
What really made this place not worth it was the ridiculous wait we had. The place was far from buzzing when we got there, luckily before any friday night crowd and it still took almost an hour to recieve our food, which wasn't even cooked!! The waitress was non-existent while staff was obviously waiting around doing nothing. The sushi bar seemed to be so busy but nothing was coming out of it! The atmosphere seems a bit much for the allston location, where most of us are used to places like white horse and sunset. Cool decor, but they are trying too hard to be pretentious in a local neighborhood and the service just doesn't match the attitude. Drinks were good, but downtown Boston expensive without the strength a $10 drink requires. Next time I'll skip the crazy $60 for two tab and just do my normal take-out from super fusion. In this case it really is the simpler the better!!

Best Delivery Pizza (allston/brighton/brookline)

NOT Upper Crust who's slices are fantastic but has no idea how to deliver a hot pizza (probably helped if they got their delivery person a car instead of that damn bike). Thin crust, thick crust, range of toppings... can you help me out here?!

Buttercream frosting recipe....

The bakery/party store near me makes the best sugar sweet buttercream frosting. I'd like to make my own from scratch (since they won't sell me just the frosting!). Any ideas where to start?

Privus in Allston?

I got the same Daily Candy which called it Privus!

Sushi in cambridge

Looking for really good sushi/maki in cambridge, over by Kendall sq. I've got my fav place by home, need one for lunch deliveries at work!

Privus in Allston?

Anyone been there yet? What is the sushi like and how are the drinks? I didn't even know the Kell's closed!

V-day lonely hearts - something fun!

Ideas on where 4 singles girls can go for V-day to celebrate? Not too $$$, good drinks (required!).

Thanks!

Brookline Sushi

In Boston there are two kinds of sushi places. The ones that have been around forever and have upped their prices for the ridiculousness that they serve. If you put enough things in a maki roll then you don't notice that the fish isn't the freshest. Tada... you have Fugakyu. Ginza is about on the same level. You pay for the japanese (but is it really?) atmosphere and those bitchy hotesses and indifferent serving staff.

And then there are the genuinely good places that care about what they serve and know what they are doing.

If you want fresh fish at reasonable prices and delivery, check out Super Fusion in Washington Square. Their spicy tuna roll, which they will happily add avocado to for me, is full of chunks of fresh, tender tuna in a tangy spicy mayo. In the two years that I've been ordering delivery from there, I have yet to have a bad experience. They've never had a problem adjusting what's on the menu for my tastes, presentation is nice and they don't skimp on the good stuff like other places, rice to inside ratio is perfect. Try the avocado snow crab roll with tamarind dipping sauce, it's incredible!

Steakhouse for serious business meeting, $$ no object

So I need a really good steakhouse in the DFW area, closer to the airport is preferable for a big deal business meeting. A seal-the-deal kind of place for big-wigs with good food, atmosphere, the works. Any suggestions? This is for this week!!

Thanks!!

Need Birthday Cake - Boston!

Party Favors in Brookline. on Beacon street if your wife likes frosting. They can make a cake of anything (though pricy for unique creations, and the sweet buttercream frosting is to die for. Don't get chocolate cake though, the vanilla works better.

25th birthday

I second Cuchi Cuchi! It's expensive, but the food is good and the drinks are creative. And the place is decorated so eclectic that you'll never be bored. Check out the website, you can have a good time there!

Spanish Tapas accessible to the T?

Tasca is great but the menu is boring and typical. Bar Lola on Comm (and Dartmouth?) has a nice twist on tapas and the atmosphere isn't as stuffy as Tapeo or Tasca. Check out their website for the menu though I believe it changes from time to time... I had my last birthday there and loved every part of it.

Michael's Deli

Best Reuben I've ever had, lots of meat, always fulfills my "extra kraut and dressing" request and melts the cheese perfectly without making a whole soggy mess. Considering the Jewish influence in the area, you'd think there would be more places that knew how to make a sandwich like this but I can't seem to find anything that comes even close. Forget Zaftigs that place is trash in comparison!

Publick House, Brookline, 6/9/7

I have to say that Publick House has become my absolute favorite place. I'm determined to try every beer on the menu! And I'm not exactly a beer lover at all, but here I can't help myself! The food so far has been excellent, from simple (and huge) burgers, lamb chops, belgian stew, meatloaf, pumpkin ravioli, sandwiches... replacing the fries with a salad for my burger (since we always have to order the frites with mayo as an app) is easy and they give you a heaping plate. Have yet to try the moules or the mac & cheese that is supposed to be amazing... I think tonight I have my eye on one of those cheese plates.... YUM!

So the question is... what will be the drink of choice tonight? Any favorites out there?

Vegetarian Friendly Chinese? (Brookline/Brighton/Allston)

Shabu on Harvard Street in Brookline (over by Dok Bua and across the street from the Butcherie). If you've never had Shabu, it's basically cooking your own food (be it tofu, a selection of veggies as well as meats and fish) in different kinds of broth. It's delicious, very easily vegetarian, just make sure to ask for veg broth not chicken and you create your own flavors! Everyone I've taken there has *loved* it!

Bar Lola?

So I just wanted to tell you all that I had a wonderful birthday dinner at Bar Lola. The food was fantastic, the drinks perfect and the atmosphere just warm and friendly. My only complaint would be that it was a little dark. Our group sat for a while just chatting and they were fine just letting us take our time and enjoy. Our server (wish I remembered his name) was from Columbia and so very friendly and enthusiastic.
The crab casserole dish was quite different but very good with the melted gruyere on top as were the duck ravioli. It was a nice change from the boring typical tapas that most places have and the portions were quite large. I shared four dishes with another person and we couldn't finish everything. The crepes with Dulce de leche we made with REAL dulce de leche (I know, I'm from Argentina!) and the crepes were just right, I couldn't stop eating it even though I was beyond stuffed.
I'm so glad I tried it, this place is quite the gem!

Bar Lola?

So not a place vegetarians can eat at? Also, I heard that they have hookahs... true?

Bar Lola?

So I just made reservations for 10 at Bar Lola and stupidly THEN went on here to see comments. The website was what seduced me and the food sounds good. Any recent reviews that are better than earlier this year? Or should I just cancel and go to Tapeo? All I'm looking for is a nice sized decently priced menu (nothing above $20) with a good cocktail list. Way too many choices has me going nuts! I wish Stix was open, it looks perfect!

Best food+ Beer In the Watertown/Brighton Area

The Publick House in Washington Square... the beer menu is bigger than the food menu! The food is typical Belgian, the frites are amazing and they have several different mayo dips to go with them. The burgers are HUGE and yummy and come with perfectly crispy fries with the skins (a bit different from the frites). Have yet to try the mussels but that's next on the list!!

Sam Adam's to release Utopia's again!

They've been gone for two years and the newsletter says the are coming back. The question is exactly when and where can I get some? Considering the brewery is based here you'd think they'd be easier to find but so not the case that I've seen.

Where do you guys find your special brews and any suggestions on some to try this winter? I've become a HUGE fan of Publick house in Brookline, their beer menu is incredible and so far so tasty!

29th Birthday celebration locations?

So I'm turning 29 in a couple weeks and since last year sucked as far as celebrating I'm taking control. I'd like to find a place/places where the food is good and the atmosphere is fun for any sized group of people. Music is good, a lounge type place that serves apps would be good. Not overly trendy, but just a fun place (that isn't filled with college kids). Does a Jake Ivory's minus the sticky floor and under 25s exist in Boston??

Please help!!

Thanks,

Tash
