Thumann's Jumbo franks in southern NJ?

ShopRite in East Windsor has them.

Ground Round - East Windsor

I wonder if they still charge kids by the pound? That was one of the main reasons my parents took us there when we were kids...I remember the one attached to the Monmouth Mall.

Bergen Record lauds service at local casual / fast food places.

The Record believes its target demographic is an upper-class Republican living in Ridgewood. This is why they ignore everything in the southeast part of the county (that infamous Route 4 Mason-Dixon line). I'd love them to review some of the places in Wallington, Lodi...

Thanks for the review. I was hoping for better things because I'm so burned out on the Americana's shrinking menu and rising prices.

Favorite Defunct Monmouth County Restaurant

There was a great restaurant in Matawan called Terra Christa's that my family went to for years. Great New American cuisine. Then the owners retired, it became a succession of crappy stuff that would close within a year, and now it's a 25 Burgers. Bums me out.

What became of NJ Sizzler locations?

Yeah, that's pretty mindblowing in a lot of ways. We went to Sizzler's a bunch of times when we were kids - my guess is it was affordable and somewhat kid-friendly. I remember liking it because they had a "fixin's bar" and I liked piling a hundred pickles on my burger. :)

Zuh? Dave Willis is an awesome and highly respected business journalist. His article is about the restaurant opening, not a review.

Mercer Street Grill in Hightstown - anyone try it yet? (with fun backstory!)

So there's a new venture in this location, which has to be one of the more doomed spots for a restaurant that I've ever seen. When I first got to Hightstown the place was the Slow Down Cafe, a mysterious coffee joint that was barely open (I think it was only open weekdays 9-4 p.m., seriously). That eventually went under, and was replaced with - of all things - a Thai noodle place, called Da's Thai Noodles.

When Da's opened all you had to do was glance at it and you knew it was never going to last. The owners did very little to change the decor from the previous use, so it looked like the Slowdown suddenly went under new management and added Thai food to the coffeehouse menu. Apparently the owners felt the location was too small to be successful, and they've since moved to Hopewell.

Which leads us to the mysterious Mercer Street Grill. No website yet. It's closed Mondays. My wife and I have peered through the windows, and it looks like it's a New American cuisine attempt with emphasis on steaks. The restaurant is TINY so I'm highly skeptical that this is going to last. I mean, you don't really think of downtown Hightstown when you're in the mood for steaks, do you?

One of the fascinating things about this location is that years ago, a woman was murdered in the apartment above the restaurant. My wife thinks the location has been subsequently cursed/haunted. Now personally I think haunted food tastes better but I haven't mustered up the courage to try Mercer Street Grill. So any info would be appreciated!

Changes at Tic Toc Diner

I don't think diners are looked down upon at all. Many of them are family-friendly - more so than a lot of chain restaurants that dominate the highways - are offer a good variety and decent prices.

Restaurants for Fat People

I dunno. Part of the Fat Experience is consuming fast food alone in your dimly-lit apartment. Anyone who has done a McDonald's/BK drive-by combo (McD's for the fries and shake, BK for a Whopper and onion rings) knows what I'm talkin' about. To "upscale" this experience is just exploitation IMO.

That's a shame to read. Last time I tried to go to the Tick Tock, it was packed to the gills so we had to go elsewhere.

Real New Jersey experience

Growing up in Monmouth County, my dad used to eat it almost every morning for breakfast, and we always called it pork roll. I didn't hear anyone call it "Taylor ham" until I went to school down in Rowan and ate breakfast with my girlfriend's family.

Coming to Matawan/Aberdeen

Well, glad to see people are liking 25 Burgers, but for me it wounds my heart to see such a place spring up out of the ashes of Terra Christa's, a fine restaurant that was my family's favorite for many years. We still haven't found a place that combines their great food with awesome service.

New England Hot Dog Company

I'm very sad to hear this. Hotdoglover (which almost sounds like a porn screen name, lol) may not like veggie dogs, but my wife does, so this was a great place where we could go a grab a relatively inexpensive lunch. I thought the dogs were really good, though my favorite remains Windmill. Also the fries at this place were great!

I have to say though that the Freehold NEHC had a terrible location. People go to that stripmall primarily for the WoW and for many years Freehold Music. There's that weird Farmer's Market there that I never walked into and never knew anything about, despite having worked down the road for years...

Ferry House in Princeton - Big Let Down

Damn, they actually fired a rude server? Guess it makes sense because restaurants can't afford to lose customers over something that is arguably easily controlled.

Ferry House in Princeton - Big Let Down

Thanks for the heads up. Fruit flies? Totally unacceptable. I would have walked out of the joint right then and there.

Also surprised to hear about bad service at Eno Terra. I love that place - nothing but good experiences.

Best Chinese in Hightstown/East Windsor area?

Uh, first off, heading out to Manalapan to go to Peking Pavilion to take Chinese take-out is pretty ridiculous. Second, I've been there and I was very far from impressed. I read articles in the Asbury Park Press about how it burned down and was rebuilt, and someone was quoted as saying the sesame chicken there was to die for. So when PP was rebuilt my wife and I went there and I ordered the sesame chicken. I was shocked - it was bland and uninspiring. Plus the layout of the place was very strange, allowing for a lot of noise, and the service sucked. Can't say I'm in any rush to go back there, and it was expensive to boot!

Best Chinese in Hightstown/East Windsor area?

Ah, you're right, I was thinking of Hunan House. We've eaten-in there and it was pretty good, I thought, but you're saying the take-out is a no-go?

So what would you recommend in the general area? Anything? Bueller?

Best BBQ in Bergen County?

So Cuddy's in Hackensack is no good? I always wondered about that place because it seriously looks like a clone of Big Ed's BBQ in Matawan, which is awesome IMO.

Best Chinese in Hightstown/East Windsor area?

We've been loyal Hunan Wok fans for several years, but it seems that the quality there is slipping a little bit. Any recommendations of other places we can try? The other places I've been to are Holy Wong, which sucked, and the place in the same stripmall as the Blockbuster's/Staples on Route 130, which is good but expensive, if I remember correctly.

Mr. Shrimp - Belmar

Mr. Shrimp is one of the things my wife and I miss most having moved out of Monmouth County. I always get the crabcake sandwich and my wife always gets the fried shrimp sandwich. We've experimented with other stuff too, but that's what immediately springs to mind. Great service, very friendly atmosphere. Can't recommend it enough.

Sabrina's Pizza in East Windsor, NJ

I haven't tried that place yet, but my wife and I are big fans of Villa Roma, in that weird shopping center across from Wal-Mart. As a sit-down restaurant it's pretty "meh" - do NOT go there on a sunny day because they have crappy blinds and it gets intolerable in there. But for delivery they're pretty fantastic. I recommend the fresh garlic pie.

There's a fairly new place that opened next to ShopRite that I would advise people to stay far away from - Singa's. Their pizza is atrocious. It tasted like bad Little Caesar's, if anyone remembers that chain.

Need To Find Some Good Restaurants in Monmouth County, NJ

I prefer the Sawa in Eatontown too. For Thai food in Monmouth County I agree that Far East Taste is a good bet, but don't forget about Siam Garden in the Galleria in Red Bank. It's pricey but I think it's a nice place to take a date. Here's hoping you get laid!
