Why don't more Americans use induction?

I recently had this debate with a friend who is in love with his induction cooktop. My husband and I are in love with our gas stove. My friend claims to be able to boil water in 60 seconds, while on our gas stove, it takes somewhere around 3-5 minutes depending on the amount of water being boiled.
He says he likes that the stove surface is not "too hot" afterwards, which is ideal for kids and he says with gas, sometimes kids become forgetful and may forget to turn off the gas. His Chinese wife didn't look too pleased when he mentioned that she can't use her regular wok on it; she had to buy an induction wok.
I think he just likes all the buttons!

Why Are Pho Serving Sizes So Large?

I find that even if I eat the largest bowl of Pho and finish it, I am hungry an hour later. Also are you drinking the leftover broth? Don't do it!

Soap suds come up the other side of my kitchen sink

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I had a look under the sink yesterday and yep, the pipes are joined and are horizontal. I guess I'll just have to learn to live with it! Damn suds!

If you are invited over to friends' home for dinner...

I ask, "what can we bring" and if the person says "nothing", I will pick up a bottle of wine or some beer. Depending on who the host is (we have some friends who don't drink alcohol), we might also pick up flowers or a potted plant or a box of chocolates or candies. Just a little something to show our appreciation. We have one friend who we brought a bouquet of flowers to years ago in a vase. It was her "very first vase" and a decade later she still uses it. :)

Sometimes we will call when we are on our way to that person's house and ask if there are any emergency items that they need. Ice is usually the answer to this question.

My mother would kill me if she knew I went to someone's house for dinner empty handed.

Soap suds come up the other side of my kitchen sink

In our new house, we have a double sink in the kitchen. I use one side to wash and rinse dishes and the other side to drain the dishes in. My problem is that as I am washing, soap suds creep up on to the "clean" side of the sink.

I have tried using less soap and I have tried using different soap but the problem still occurs.

Does anyone know why this happens? It's driving me bananas! Hoping it's something as simple as a partially clogged drain. The sink is a little funky.

Ideas?

Is Diet Coke With Lemon a Regional Thing?

I would have thought the bartender would have at least put the lemon on the side of the glass instead of in the glass.

Looking for a new cocoa powder

I use Cadbury's cocoa powder but I have my parents bring a can when they return from wintering in the Caribbean. Not sure if it's available here. It's lovely. I also have a tin of the Lindt brand one that I purchased at the Lindt store in Vancouver.

It's even more tempting to pull the divider out and poke them with it until they are convinced that they must pay for your groceries.

Haha, I've seen that too; what is up with that?! It's not like there's been a zombie apolcalypse or something.

Or what about the people who put the divider in front of your groceries and look at you as though you're going to try and scam them into paying for your stuff?

Yeah I always get an odd look from fast food servers about ordering a diet coke with my McDonald's or whatever crap I decided to eat that day. Regular Coke is just too sweet for my liking. Hurts my teeth. Plus the aftertaste of fountain diet coke is sooooooo good.

Lactaid ice cream

We buy the Chapmans lactose free/sugar free one too. My uncle is diabetic so we buy it for him when he comes over and the leftovers are ours to enjoy, gas and upset stomach free. They have been coming out with more and more new flavors. It is a bit expensive for the size you get but it is worth it.

How do you like to be addressed by your server?

The man who made my burrito yesterdal called me "amiga". I liked that. But it was a burrito joint.

Oh and I once saw a woman pick up a sealed tub of margarine, open the package stick her finger inside and lick her finger afterwards. She was tasting the margarine to see if it was "her brand". I only buy butter now.

Funny scenes at the market

The other night my husband and I were in the Superstore Walmart or whatever it's called. We observed the following argument (at full outside-voice volume in the middle of the store):

Wife: You don't even want to talk to me!
Husband (while pushing a baby in a stroller): Why would I? You're such a b****!
Wife: Shut up! Help me put this in the cart (mini fridge).

Needless to say some older folks had gathered around and were watching as if it were a TV show.

One of my girlfriends in university who is a dancer often tap danced down the aisles of the grocery store. I'm sure that turned a few heads!

Lol, no but the owner of the shop was within earshot and he heard of course. He didn't know the girls were my friends until they told him afterwards.

Homemade Ice Cream Troubleshooting

Did your ice cream maker come with a recipe book? I would suggest trying a recipe straight from that. I have the KitchenAid version and the recipes from the booklet that came with it are the only ice cream recipes I use. I too have never heard of making ice cream with whipped cream, only whipping cream.

How about

"what can I get for you hags?"

When addressing 2 ladies? I once said that to a couple of friends (customers coming in for free ice cream) while working at an ice cream shop. We had a good crack up about it.

How do you like to be addressed by your server?

90% of the restaurants we eat in are Chinese restaurants where the servers never talk to you or even look at you. They just want you to order, eat, pay and get out. Lol.

Your favorite 'road trip' food

We usually have our dogs with us when we are on road trips so we picnic. We pack cheese or tinned salmon sandwiches on white bread, dill pickle Lays and diet for me, sour cream and onion Ruffles and coke for him. Oh and of course a few hot rods for each of us and a table cloth. And of course dog food and water bowls.

If we are visiting my parents my mom always packs us healthy stuff like grapes, cheese and crackers veggies and nuts for the ride home. We usually keep the fruit and veggies for our work week. Road tripping is about eating junk!

If we are in a pinch and we don't pack any food, we stop at a McDonald's, get everything to go and open the tailgate in our SUV and sit in the back to eat. Fun times.

End grain cutting board problem?

For future, you can use half a lemon to refresh your cutting board. Chop a lemon in half and rub the exposed half on the surface of your cutting board.

Weird pregnancy cravings?

Toast with peanut butter and butter, pasta in cream sauce, garlicky pickles, hot dogs. Oh and ice cream sandwiches, although I haven't had one that's been satisfying enough. Lately I've been craving ice cold skim milk - I drink it by the pint now. And anything deep fried. We were in the mall the other day and I HAD to stop for a poutine at New York Fries (yuck, I know). My husband touched me affectionately on the arm and said, "I really, really love the pregnant version of you." I am usually a pretty healthy eater and am guilty of nagging my husband for eating junk food so this is a change for him and of course he encourages me to give in to all my cravings. Hot McDonald's fries. Bacon. This is probably just a list of everything that I want to eat right now.

I did have intense aversions to pork when I first got pregnant. I couldn't eat the Berkshire pork presented to me at our 10 course anniversary dinner.

Someone in my office is eating McDonalds. I am about to hunt them down.

Food good.

What dish do you cook that people just rave about?

Same here, people love my tacos and Mexican rice. It's probably the easiest thing on the planet to cook too.

I grind chicken thighs or chuck using my KA stand mixer. I have a secret mix of spices that I use. Sautee some onions, throw in the spices, add the meat. Cook for a few minutes then add brown sugar, red wine vinegar and some tomato paste.

Sometimes I make my own corn tortillas which my friends love too.

I rave about my Greek friend's mashed potatoes (there is a Greek word for them). Amazeballz.

In defense of Gordon Ramsey

I thought he was hard of hearing, that's why he shouted all the time. Surely his attitude couldn't be beneficial in any workplace. Imagine your boss berated you in front of your peers. It's happened to me and it's humiliating.

Which machine/device(s) will give me the absolute best cup of coffee I can possibly brew at home?

+1 for French Press. When you water boils in the kettle, give it 10 seconds to cool off before adding it to the press pot. I find that most traditional coffee makers are too hot and tend to give the coffee a bitter flavor. I bought my FP at Ikea for 10 bucks. When it gets old and cruddy, I buy another. And freshly ground beans is another important factor.

But also agree with Bacardi1; it all comes down to personal preference.

Family Dinnerware

We were in the same boat a few years ago. The Corelle Hearthstone dishes I had bought on impulse was way too heavy and didn't fit nicely in our cupboards or in our dishwasher. My husband hated them. I loved them because they were red. We also found that because the plates were so large, we actually ate more because we filled them up so much.
One night we were browsing around Home Outfitters (not sure if that store exists in the US) and stumbled upon 2 boxes of Mikasa "casual dinnerware" for 75% off. The number of settings (8 in total) was perfect. We scooped them up and felt like we were stealing them. They've been with us for the last 5 years or so and they get a ton of abuse. They are still in great shape.
My parents had Corelle dishes for as long as I can remember and I think they were more durable back in the 70s.
