What's for Dinner #339 -- The Advent Edition

Last night was a butterflied chicken breast stuffed with fontina and cappicola, over a bed of smashed rosemary cherry potatoes. Quite tasty, but I got a stain on one of my favorite shirts while making it, booooo!
Tonight is just going to be a simple cheeseburger on the grill and an early bedtime. I'm off to Prague for a 6 day trip tomorrow, and I need to do a little reset of that internal clock. For the next week--Christmas market goodies in my belly.

Pizza Hut's new menu, anyone give it a try?

So, as I'm sure you've heard, the Hut has had an overhaul. Since a few good mom and pop places near me have shut down, I may be giving it a try. Has anyone had the pleasure or displeasure?
Please do share :)

What cookbooks have you bought lately or are you lusting after? December 2014 edition!

I adore his shows, so that's why I had to get the book. Got crazy bust with the holiday stuff this weekend, so I'll try to tackle one of his wonderful recipes this week and I will post back :)

What's For Dinner #338 - Winter Wonderland Edition [through 12/14/14]

Last night was fried jumbo shrimp. Just a simple coating of egg and flour heavily seasoned with old bay. Lemon wedges and traditional cocktail sauce. Smoke gouda mashed spuds and arugula salad.
Since I didn't use up all of those lovely shrimpies, it's be Chinese style fried rice for tonight.

We're so early in, but I already nominate that for this week's screen licker. Fantastic!

I'd like to, but I've never tried homemade . . .

Sausages. But I do fully intend to tackle sausage making soon. I intend to but myself a food dealer for Christmas so I can freeze them. Of particular interest to me is Thai Isaan sausage: http://www.thaifood-recipe.com/recipe...

Favorite cooking task(s)?

Brushing sauce onto a grilling meat. Mmmm. I think it's just that the fact I know the flavor payoff will be so big that sets off my happy feelings :)

What is your favorite stovetop meal?

One of my favorites is sauteed kielbasa coins with sliced green peppers and red onions served over rice. Easy and tasty!

Thank you, LW. Let's just say that if The Herb Box was closer to my home, I probably would have topped out at 300 lbs long ago ;)

Any thoughts on MasterChef Canada?

I'm disappointed in the show, I usually like what Canada has in the way of cooking shows. The judging just seems very, very fake. An Kaila also freaks me out, the constant look of surprise!! is really distracting.

Nah, not an eejit. This eejit has 2 pairs of glasses so I'll always be able to find at least one. That's and eejit.

What's for Dinner #337 - the It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas & Hanukkah 2014 Edition! [through December 8, 2014]

Today is the day that I dread most in the calendar year--it's time to go Christmas shopping. Yup, I usually do most of it in the course of one day, and will wrap and ship the stuff this week. I really wish I had a "make a donation to my favorite charity" type of family. But mine likes their junk, haha!
But what will power me through my day is a brunch at one of my favorite places not far from the mall: http://theherbbox.com/menus/southbrid...
Their smoked salmon hash is a dream. I'll probably be so full from eating there, that a nice gelato will suffice for dinner.

[UPDATE] Vote for Your Worst Food Trends for "Best (or in this case, worst) of 2014"

For Starches and main dishes---Macaroni and Cheese. There is nothing special happening here, people! It's noodles and cheese. So for the love of gawd, stop putting it in grilled cheese sandwiches, stop wadding it up in little balls and frying it. And I mean this with all my heart, stop putting perfectly good lobster in it!!

Christmas - Influenced by Thanksgiving or not

When I was growing up, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were nearly identical (groan). But as an adult, I like to mix it up. Usually some seafood will be involved. And New Year's Eve is often spent out of town for me, so I eat whatever on the menu catches my eye!

Not to my knowledge, he's Australian. He's got a wonderful show on the Cooking Channel that is on Saturday mornings if you're in the US. Will be happy to post my thoughts on a dish when I cook from it :)

I just got Luke Nguyen's My Vietnam. Wonderful book. Beautiful photographs and fun stories. I haven't had the chance to cook from it yet, but I plan to change that this weekend :)

A greek hole in the wall nearby recently closed, so I will venture into the world of making spanakopita myself. This Emeril recipe looks easily doable.

Last evening it started to rain in my desert corner, and continued to pour all night long contributing to one of my best nights of sleep in a long, long time! Love when that happens. Dinner was a simple chicken breast done in the oven with bbq sauce and seasonings and stuffed shroom caps with breadcrumbs, lots of parm, parsley and sun dried tomatoes.
Tonight I'll do Old Bay seasoned fried shrimp and roasted new potatoes.

I'm in the same camp. I don't have a religious belief system, but I do Christmas in that I put up a small tree, and buy gifts for my friends. And eat!! This year, I'll be celebrating about two hours away in Tucson with a girlfriend at her parents' home. They are Punjabi, and that only means good things on the food front. These people can seriously throw down in the kitchen. Yum :D

My chicken breasts didn't thaw out enough for my planned picatta, so last night was what my Thai exchange daughter called the "easy living" dish. Whatever you have in the fridge stir fried with noodles or rice. This is strips of pork with bell peppers, green onions and cilantro in spicy peanut sauce. Not spectacular, but it was darned tasty! I think tonight is going to be pizza, some girlfriends are coming over to play some cards and have a beer (or three) it'll be fun :)
