What's for Dinner #316 - the Hot August Night edition

Heh, it got the job done and my disclaimer is that I'd been interning at a dentist's office. My dad is tough as nails.
Suz, hope the man's hand is showing improvement with a good night's sleep :)

What's for Dinner #316 - the Hot August Night edition

When I was in my teens, my dad lost his job. So, I had to rip out his bad molar with pliers. He had a big slug of whiskey before and after.
I only later found out that these measures were taken because I needed a new dance costume at the time.
Home medical care rules! If common sense is used.
And I learned to make a mean veggie and rice soup then :)

Jeebus! Being an avoider of all things that involve a doctor, I vote for advil and an ice pack overnight.
The hearty meal will send him on his way to feeling better. Please let us know tomorrow!

Lay's Potato Chips' New Flavors -- Seen or Tried Them?

I really want to have something nice to say about these chips. But, alas... nothing. On the other hand, if I had all the answers, I'd have a million bucks ;)

Lay's Potato Chips' New Flavors -- Seen or Tried Them?

Found the cappuccino ones at yet another CVS while tracking down my grandfather's old dude pills.
Just vile. Sweet, bitter chocolate on a chip. It's just not right on so many levels.

What's for Dinner #316 - the Hot August Night edition

Hot August Night is right! Our lows have been in the 90's. How people lived before AC is something I'll never wrap my head around. Tonight is going to be empanadas with ground beef and veg. Rice and red beans on the side. Tomorrow, Pap, the hound and I are headed to a little town called Bisbee for the weekend. We're both fans of crime novels set in this tiny western town, it's about 10 degrees cooler, and the food looks promising! http://caferoka.com/

Thanks, Suz! I'm in Ahwatukee, HeyImBack, and did stumble on them at my CVS. Hoping to find the other 2 for the sake of trying :)

Thank you :) I started with curry paste I made and froze a few weeks ago. It's pretty standard issue with chopped dried Serrano and bird chilis. Then garlic, shallots, kaffir lime leaves, palm sugar, shrimp paste, ginger, s&p.
For the dish I mixed it with a small amount of coconut milk, green bell peppers, white onion, chopped carrots lots of lime juice and zest, and tons of cilantro.
Would love to give measurements, but I'm a "throw some in" kinda gal.

Neither do I. And you're right about the crazy eyes. Poor guy looks so riddled with anxiety that it makes me anxious just watching him.

Last evening was one of those times when you go into to the kitchen with one idea and something else ends up being dinner. My butter chicken turned into a Thai dry curry pictured below.
I have a lot of ESL tutoring to do today, so pizza is WFD. For those of you familiar with Mellow Mushroom, I'll pick up a pie from the local outpost. I'm in the mood for the spinach, tomato, and feta pie.

Finally decided on dinner. I'm going to go the Indian butter chicken route with white rice and steamed snap peas. I've been working on a pineapple granita throughout the day that will probably be had with some lovely vodka from the freezer. One of the perks (beside the charming company) of having pap around is that the man straight up refuses shit vodka. Works to the household's advantage :)

My Chowhound Wedding

Wow, fantabulous!! That much outstanding food presented so elegantly could almost make my wittle brain implode.
Congratulations on your wedding! So nice that mariacarmen played such an important role, we adore her over on WFD.
Thanks for sharing the pics, and all the best!

Lay's Potato Chips' New Flavors -- Seen or Tried Them?

Haha, I just poster this in the snacking thread --- Lays "Do Me a Flavor" chips. I have the Mango Salsa and Bacon Mac & Cheese flavors. Mango Salsa is a nice flavor but too fruity for a chip. BM&C tastes like ham. Both will get eaten over time, but I won't buy again.
I think I'll need to snack on some fruit to clear the taste out ;) ---

The wasabi and cappuccino weren't available (this was a CVS). I think they've got the right idea with the mango, but it needs more sour flavor or heat or something. Of the two, I can really see bm&c catching on in the US. Salty, bacon/ham-y.

I'm glad you like it, please pass it on!! It originated when my dad had a bum knee replaced years ago. Getting plenty of exercise free of pain, he would concoct decadent snacks and declare them diet-free :)

Oh, I forgot lime juice! And lota of it. I just can't stand the tedium of exact measurements. I think it's why I'll never get the baking bug :D

Sure! It's not a recipe per se, I just eyeball crap. Cukes sliced thin with shallot rings sliced even more thin and torn cilantro. Mix it with dressing of rice wine vinegar, soy and a bit of fish sauce, sesame oil, a tidbit of honey and minced bird chili (or Serrano). Top with chopped cashews or peanuts.
I eat this stuff incessantly in the summer, or pretty much anytime.

Wow, I'm late to this party! The song Summertime can only make me think of one thing. A local flooring commercial. They are all narrated by the same grating woman, and this very short clip (not my own) sums up the feelings of an entire city of four million. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYSJ3Z...
Dinner last night was seared filet with brandy mushroom cream sauce. I got the recipe and idea from the cooking channel and made a handful of tweaks. It was quite tasty and totally diet-free! Sautéed spinach and grape tomatoes with garlic on the side.
Tonight is still undecided. I'm going to go to the market soon and see what strikes my fancy. I'm definitely in a Mediterranean mood. The ungodly heat returns tomorrow, so a few nights of takeout will be on tap.

Edited to say I'm so sorry. I read wrong somewhere along the way :/

Bobby Flay's approval really got me, too! It sure didn't look good.
As for the taco season discussion,I certainly understand making you own beforehand or using the higher quality Penzey's or something similar. But the way she explained it made me think that she grabbed a packet of Old El Paso off the shelf at Wally World, and that is certainly not teaching anyone to cook.

Sarah just grinds my last nerve. She continually makes mistakes and goes on every week. It has me a little worried that she is FN's "chosen one". Of the bunch that are left, I can get behind Nicole and Luca.

Drumroll please... after a blistering week of record breaking temps, I think it's going to rain. Which makes me very happy and hungry. Tonight, a friend is coming over to watch garbage tv, eat and imbibe. With all the banh mi going around here, I'm craving it. So, she's going to stop and grab some from a place near her work. My mouth is watering :)
