What's for Dinner #328 - The It's Fall Edition!

Last night was a repeat of chicken with saffron cream sauce from last week. It's a Giada recipe that was good, but I wanted to try it again with a few tweaks. Basically, it just needed some lemon to brighten it up. Sorry for the crappy pic.
Tonight is undecided. I have some nice cod filets, but I'm not quite sure what I'll do with them.

Does every meal out have to be so Chowish or not?

No. I want good food and good service, that's it on some occasions. Some of my most satisfying meals have come from local sports bars. It just depends on my mood.

Best advice

When I first starting cooking about 8-9 years ago, I signed for a local cooking class. I told my teacher that I really wanted to learn, but was afraid of making mistakes. His advice to me was that I will make mistakes. A lot of them. And it may just be a crappy dinner that tastes "off", and I may be throwing things out and ordering pizza. But once I learned to be patient and try, there would be a whole new world of food opened up to me.

Neely divorce

Perhaps there was just a little too much sugar in this marriage.

I wish someone would tell the force in charge of my weather it's fall!! 105 today and it's really putting a crimp on my desire to cook. Tonight is turkey burgers with with usual toppings, and a veggies salad yet TBD.

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

On a non-Denny's note, Sizzler is really popular with university students in Bangkok. Same steaks and crap, and some Thai inspired dishes thrown in. Total head scratcher.

Hey Fowler! These are stupid easy and be great for any party. I just used frozen puff pastry cut into triangles, and ham and gouda from the deli. I layered it ham, cheese, ham, cheese and just rolled it up. Once it's on the parchment I gave them a melted butter wash and a sprinkle of finely grated parm and dried parsley. I think they could benefit from maybe some sort of grainy mustard dip if serving to company.
They were quite tasty. Just a fridge clean up thing yesterday, but they'll go in my rotation.

Last night's dinner ended up simple because the heat is still really hanging around :/ Black forest ham and smoked gouda in some puff pastry with arugula salad and gelato for desert.
Tonight is going to be chicken scallopini that I just saw Giada make on the tube. In my mind, it was "yes, please"! Maybe spinach and orzo for sides.

Has Home Cooking Slowed Down?

September is such a beautiful month. Maybe we're all outdoors. At least I know I'm spending a lot more time out there :)

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

Why? The last and only time I went in a 10 year span, my condo had just been painted. The fumes were getting to me so I checked into the only dog friendly hotel I could find. It was a La Quinta. It made me depressed. There was a Denny's across the parking lot, I went in to have a Moons Over My Hammy sandwich. I became more depressed. Thankfully, there was a liquor store on the other side of the parking lot. And I didn't get mugged the whole time!
So, basically, I think it's a matter of convenience for most patrons.

Last night's Filipino style pork skewers went over really well! And the friend rice was one of my better batches.
Now, with all this talk of steak, I do believe I'll pick up a couple of filets to be grilled simply with montreal style seasoning, spinach salad and a baked potato.

Thanks, Fowler. I'm certainly in no hurry. And with pap around, I'm not lonely. I'll bounce back when the time is right.
And I got a great meal out of it ;)

Omg, the string of replies is cracking me up!! Typo. But if I ever have the honor of making it for any of you here, it'll be friend rice :D
And I guess that "having friends for dinner" is a Pennsylvania-ism.

I have a good recipe for enemy rice! Leave rice in hot car for a week. Fry over low heat in lots of oil with ancient vegetables and rancid pork. Throw in tons of msg, and you're all done!

Dinner last night was a wonderful array of goodies at the Indian restaurant. A potato cake with raisins and chickpeas, smoked duck(!) tikka masala served with mushy peas, huge coconut shrimp, pork vindaloo all followed up with dark chocolate. Date dude was very fun and interesting, but I'm just not there. I think we'll remain friends.
Tonight I'm having friends for dinner, we'll bbq some Filipino pork skewers. I'll do friend rice, and a girlfriend will bring some lumpia. Yum, yum!
And pap is feeling much better :) His bug was a mild one.

No, no, no, he's not a blind Indian! But he is a doctor. Maybe I could get refills on all of pap's old guy pills? Yeah, probably not.

Tasty stuff in Hua Hin?

CtSH, I kind of figured that might be the case. Fortunately, I do like seafood, so I'm in luck there. So, I'll not expect exceptional, and just enjoy it for what it is. There will be plenty of time for truly dreamy food during my Bangkok week :)

Last night's dinner went off the rails as pap seemed to catch a bit of the tummy bug I'd been fighting. So, scrambled eggs all around. I put lump crabmeat and cheese in mine. He seems quite a bit brighter today, so hopefully it will go quickly for him.
Tonight, out for dinner on sort of a date thing. A mutual friend would really like me to meet a food freak and dog lover for dinner, so why not. He's Indian, so he'd like to take me to a nice Indian restaurant in town that offers a tasting menu. Never one to turn down free food, I shall go. And, though a relationship is not on my radar, a new friend would be nice to have.

Best non-alcoholic beer???

I prefer St. Pauli girl. I drank it for a while during a recovery from gallbladder surgery.

Not sure what I think about Scottish Independence. Truthfully, I'm not fully read up on the subject. I did enjoy a lovely trip there about 10 years ago. Not a fan of the fried mars bar, but do love the treats at chip shop. To say nothing of Glasgow's outrageously good shopping!
Feeling fully free of the belly bug, so I think I'm going to jump into DOTM tonight with spicy crab salad stuffed cucumber cups to go along with a TBD soup. Perhaps lobster bisque picked up from a nearby bistro.

What "typical American Foods" would you serve to foreigners?

My ex often entertained Italians visiting for work. What did they want? Panda Express. Dead serious. I have had 2 years to let this sink in and I still can make no sense of it. He took them to some really good Chinese places, but it always came back to the Panda 0_o

What cookbooks have you bought lately, or are you lusting after? September 2014 edition! [old]

I just don't want to part of any kind of situation that morphs my body into Kim's. Yikes!!
