Lancaster Co.

We are doing an unexpected day trip to Lancaster Co. tomorrow. Despite living in Philly for the past 6 years, I've only been out there once and it was a side trip on the way back from a conference in Harrisburg. What are some recommendations for GREAT food in the Amish Country? Both restaurants and small snacks are welcome!

Right now the agenda is just Lancaster Central Market and then driving back through Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand, etc. and stopping at roadside spots...

Gluten Free Baking

Hi all - question for those of you with more experience with gluten free baking. I'm visiting a friend this weekend and would like to bring something with me. I have about 3 cups of rice flour in my pantry from another gluten free recipe. I am wondering how well a lemon pound cake (recipe below) would work out with rice flour substituted for all purpose flour? I will probably try it out later this week, but any heads up or suggestions would be great. I've never attempted gf baking!

Plain or Sharp Provolone?

Does anyone have an opinion on whether I should use plain provolone or sharp for this recipe?

Shredded provolone? DiBruno Bros?

That's a good point, but like I said, both DiBrunos locations are en route. I dont have a food processor but I can use a box grater. The recipe calls for a pound of cheese so it would take me some time shred it all.

Shredded provolone? DiBruno Bros?

I'm looking to find shredded provolone for a recipe for surprise dinner on Valentine's Day. Does anywhere in Philadelphia sell it pre-shredded? I've never seen it before. Does DiBruno Brothers shred cheese to order? My office is near the CC location and I live near the Italian Market location. I know I could just shred it myself - but I'm looking to save time as I need to pick it up after work, make the recipe and get it in the oven before my partner gets home from work!

Best recs for CC Restaurant Week

I always look forward to CCRW as a good excuse to try new places without breaking the budget. What are your recommendations for the best places to try for CCRW this January? I've done the requisite Zahav, Amada, Budakkan, etc. and I'm looking to try somewhere new. Thinking Pumpkin or Supper? Any recommendations are appreciated!

replacement for chicken stock in lentil soup

Yum - reminds me of something my mom would do back in Boston! Wish I had some on hand.
There is nothing better than a peeled potato cooked in that liquid...

replacement for chicken stock in lentil soup

I've got Trader Joe's vegetable broth concentrate...
Bought it to try it but I'm not a huge fan.

replacement for chicken stock in lentil soup

I plan to make the Barefoot Contessa Lentil Vegetable Soup (recipe below) tomorrow but I dont have any chicken stock on hand. Right now I'm planning to just use water, but looking for suggestions on a good replacement. Any suggestions? I'm worried that water may make the soup bland! (Other recipe suggestions are welcome too - but trying to get rid of some leeks!)

Use for leftover breadcrumbs: panko and parmesan?

I made pork milanese last night with a basic panko/parmesan blend. However, I think I have more leftover breadcrumbs than I used to coat the meat!

Any suggestions on how to use it up quickly? I think there may be a little leftover egg in the mix (I tried to pick out as much as possible). I'd like to get rid over it before the end of the weekend.

I'd also like to use them with a veggie dish if possible (I try to limit meat to once a week and the pork milanese was this week!). Any suggestions?

Zahav's salatim eggplant dish

Actually, thats not it. It was more like a dip, or compote-like

Zahav's salatim eggplant dish

I think I might have found the recipe. Can anyone confirm? http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/ta...

Zahav's salatim eggplant dish

Can someone tell me the name of the eggplant from Zahav's salatim selection? (It's not baba ganoush - its more like roasted eggplant and perhaps something else) I want to make it at home so any recipes would be great too. Thanks

beignet mix

where can i buy cafe du monde beignet mix in the philadelphia area?

coq au vin for gluten-free

Thanks! Another question, do you refrigerate your rice flour? I have Bob's Red Mill rice flour. The label says to refrigerate but I have had it in the cupboard for a few months after purchasing...

coq au vin for gluten-free

The flour is to coat the chicken before browning. Cornstarch, then?

Cartagena, Colombia

Just booked a last minute trip to Cartagena. Any suggestions for budget-friendly restaurants? We are interested in both authentic Colombian and eclectic/unique spots. We will be in before heading to beach at Tayrona PPN. Any recommendations on activities or sites to see are appreciated as well!

coq au vin for gluten-free

I plan to make coq au vin for dinner with guests next weekend. One guest is allergic to gluten and I just realized that the recipe includes flour. Any suggestions for an alternative to conventional wheat flour? I have rice flour in my cupboard. It would be great to use some of that up, but I am open to other options if something else would be better.

Boiled peanuts

Do you mean blister peanuts or boiled peanuts? I have never seen boiled peanuts (in the can) at TJs.

ajicitos dulces and culantro

Does anyone know where I can find these items in Philadelphia? Any specific vendors at the Italian Market or RTM?

Does anyone know where to buy boiled peanuts (in a can) in Philadelphia? We love this southern specialty but cant find them anywhere!

Irish/British food stores in Philly? Lyle's GOLDEN SYRUP

I found it! They carry it at DiBruno's Center City, and yes, I was in RTM and Jonathan's Best does in fact have it as well. Thanks all.

Irish/British food stores in Philly? Lyle's GOLDEN SYRUP

I'm trying to make an old recipe that calls for golden syrup. Anyone know where I can buy lyle's golden syrup in Philadelphia?
