Have you tried Freak'n Unbelievable yet? I've been wanting to, but it's so close to Red Coat and Red Coat is hard to pass up.

Dinner in the 17th by Le Méridien Etoile

I'm looking for a dinner recommendation near our hotel, Le Méridien Etoile, on Thursday, September 25. We'll be flying in the same day, so for our first night we want something close by, but definitely not at our hotel, as we'll be pretty tired. We're open to any cuisine, mid-priced.

Thanks so much!

Detroit Breakfasts - Eastern Market

Most Saturday mornings I go to yoga in midtown at the crack of dawn and hit up Eastern Market for shopping and breakfast.

Last week I finally tried Vivio's and enjoyed myself, The service was great, but I wasn't crazy about it overall. Maybe I ordered wrong. I got the special, lobster omelette, which was just okay, My hash browns were way undercooked.

Apparently this is where breakfast drinkers go. Wahoo!! My people.
Never saw so many wine/shot glasses with eggs or pancakes in my life before 10:00 a.m. Not wanting to be left out, my table got a round of Bloody Marys. Two of us got a side of bacon in the drink, one plain. My husband felt they were "toned down, which is probably a good thing at breakfast". I felt my bacon-free drink was pretty bland and lacking spice and the acid I expect of tomato juice.

Even though we were stuffed, we stopped at the beignet food truck on the way to our car. Awesome. I wish they'd drive by my house like the ice cream man. They'd make a fortune

I love Russell Street and have been dozens and dozens of times and would go every day if the wait wasn't so long. My husband isn't thrilled with the communal dining, which I love, but the quiche of the day keeps him coming.

When we couldn't get in to Russell Street on Memorial Day weekend due to the insane line, we ventured into Corktown and had a wonderful breakfast at Brooklyn Street Local. Sat on the patio in the sun and got a delicious breakfast salad and the best, lightest, airiest lemon scones.

Venturing out of my normal routine and discovering Brooklyn Street Local made me wonder what Detroit breakfast gems I'm missing.

What do you recommendation?

Restaurants Near Hilton Union Square [San Francisco]

I'm sorry if this has already been answered before - or many times before - but how about three dinner recommendations near the Hilton Union Square? Not looking for fancy, white linen, etc., but not ruling it out either. One member of our group is NOT too adventurous, but as long as there is at least one banal item on the menu, she'll have to cope. Love wine, fresh food, Italian, seafood, good wine. Oh, I already said wine. My bad. Please help so I don't get stuck at a chain! We're at a convention with no car. No problem cabbing it, but would prefer not too long a drive. Thanks for your help!

Detroit for 4th of July

Well, I wish I'd have read further before posting. The Eastern Market tour is on Saturday when you're in Ann Arbor. They do have a tour on Sunday too, but no Eastern Market or Supino's. If a bike tour interests you, I'd call and see if they'd do a private one.

Detroit for 4th of July

Last summer the Rattlesnake had a special menu for the deck which was great. They seemed to really ramp it up from their inside menu or maybe just being outside on the river made the difference. Great location, great view, especially if you combine it with a guided bike ride with Detroit Wheelhouse. Detroit Wheelhouse has an Eastern Market Tour on the 5th which includes a stop at Supino's Pizza - yum -- and a stroll through the market. Sounds like a perfect day in the D to me.

Actually, no, Shatilla isn't. It didn't even occur to me. I always get ice cream and baklava, never cake. Any particular flavors to recommend?

Any suggestions for a brunch caterer for approximately 60 and/or a bakery that makes beautiful yet delicious cakes? The event will take place in Livonia.

Dinner near The Fisher in DTW

Too late for you, Grouper, but I'm posting this for future reference.

We had tickets for the Fisher last night and decided to try out The Grille Midtown. Happy to report we had a wonderful meal.

I got the Peppadew Peppers as an appetizer. OMG, they were great! Sweet and spicy peppers stuffed with ground veal. They were worth going back for. I got the Salmon Nicoise salad for my main course. The proportion was more than generous and it was as good as I've had anywhere.

My friend had a shrimp appetizer, which she enjoyed. She got the Butternut squash salad for her entree which was fantastic.

They didn't serve bread until we requested it, but when we did, our server came out a few minutes later with a basket of hot rolls.

Service was very good. Atmosphere was okay. And this is being super picky, but I'm over auto themed restaurants in Detroit or anywhere. Overall it was a sleek clean feel. Wood floors, open floor plan, big windows.

The only negative was parking. There was street parking right out front, but the snow banks from the recent storm were so high and wide, our car would have been in the travel lane, so we opted for a nearby parking garage. You could exit through the garage on Woodward, but to get back in, you had to walk back around the corner. Not so fun since it was so cold and dark.

With valet parking and a little tweak in the decor, it'd be perfect pre-theatre meal.

Dinner near The Fisher in DTW

I don't know about Maccabee's, but I'd highly recommend Rodin in the Midtown area. It's just a couple minute drive and the food is fantastic.

There are a couple restaurants that have shuttles to the Fisher, like Roma Cafe. I'm sure if you googled you could find more shuttles.

Our hotel has a shuttle that drops you off at the Wildhorse. Anything worthwhile within walking distance? We can do a mile, mile and a half no problem.

I didn't even consider the Wildhorse because it's closed for a private event next Thursday night.

planning a trip to Cinnciati OH. need restaurant tips

I've only been to Cincinnati once, but I stumbled upon two fantastic restaurants while I was there.

The first was Shanghai Mama's. I don't remember what it was called, but I had some kind of onion pancake for an appetizer. Everything was delicious.

The other restaurant I loved was Wild Ginger, a Thai/sushi restaurant. It's a beautiful restaurant and the food is wonderful. I love sushi, but my friend is not a fan and she loved the non-sushi menu too.

Nashville recs

I'm a Detroit CH'er.

I'll be in Nashville next month Tuesday - Friday for a conference, staying at the Opryland Hotel.

First, are any of the restaurants at the hotel worth a try?

Second, any not-to-be-missed recommendations? We're not necessarily into white linen and fancy, more interested in farm-to-table. Not huge red meat eaters. One of us (not me!) is allergic to shellfish. At the same time, we want to get a real flavor for Nashville - pun intended.

The only restaurant that's been recommended so far is Silly Goose. I'd love your opinions!

Also, I have all day Wednesday free to get a feel for the city and all the top rated tours on Trip Adviser don't run on Wednesday. I know it's off topic, but I'd appreciate some sightseeing recommendations too.

Thanks in advance!

Local Detroit Recommendations

Russell Street Deli in Eastern Market is awesome. Then walk next door and grab a pizza at Supino's. If you're there on a Saturday, you can get a pierogi from People's Pierogi in the market. There's also a biegnet and Mexican food truck. (Separate trucks) for snacking.

Bucharest Grill or Hot Taco are over by Comerica Park and are worth a visit.

In midtown, two great restaurants are Seva (vegetarian) and Rodin (French).

A People Mover stop or two away from your hotel is Fountain Bistro. If you time it right, you can sit outside on a summer night and watch a movie or hear a band play for free.

You could also hop in your car and drive to La Dolce Vita in Highland Park for an old school Italian dinner.Maybe 10 minutes from your hotel. Their table side Cesar salad is worth the drive alone.

If you're up to a longer car ride, about 20 minutes away is the Sardine Room in Plymouth. They're serving some delicious and creative small plates. Then you can stroll down the street for some premium ice cream at Kilwin's.

Tashmoo Beer Garden should be up and running soon. http://www.tashmoodetroit.com

Downtown with a view? [DTW]

My theater group (by that I mean we attend, not perform) is always looking for somewhere to go downtown. We're looking for somewhere with a view as it's lighter longer.

We've been to Muer's at the Ren Cen recently. Two choices on the radar right now are Sky Bar & Grill and the Signature Grille. Anybody ever been?

Downtown Detroit

Definitely drive to Eastern Market. Even on its busiest day, you can find a parking space. I'd highly recommend Russell Street Deli for breakfast. If you have a sweet tooth, walk around the market and grab a Luv's custard pie and throw it in your mini fridge for later.

If you feel like driving a little further, (maybe another five minutes) check out Rodin in Midtown at the Park Shelton for brunch.

Can't say enough good things about Bucharest.

Around The Thumb

A reservation couldn't hurt, but they've expanded in the last couple years, so you shouldn't have problem getting in. By far the best restaurant in the Thumb.

While you're in the area, grab a drink and an appetizer near the farm at The Bank in Pt. Austin. The bar upstairs is the old bank vault.

If you're go further down the road, Giuseppe's in Caseville has a great eggplant parm. My friends and family love the Shipwreck Salad at Riverside Roadhouse in Caseville too. Lefty's gets great reviews for breakfast.

Goat in the DTW area?

I had goat at Roast last month. I wasn't thrilled. Kind of stringy and greasy, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be?

The only other time I've had goat was at Girl and the Goat in Chicago where I had a goat empanada. It was flavorful, light and fluffy, so I was anxious to try goat again.

I'm close to Farmington Hills, so I'm going to give goat one more try at Zayeqa.

Cincinnati: Favorite sushi?

I live in the Detroit area, but on a recent visit I had outstanding sushi at Wild Ginger. Since it was my only sushi in Cincinnati ever, can't really compare, but I'd definitely go back next time I'm in town.

Detroit: Eastern Market, Giovanni's, and beyond...

Great post. Thanks so much. Brooklyn Street Local was not on my radar, but it is now.

In my opinion, you didn't miss much with skipping People's Pierogi Collective. Last time I was there, they made them on the grill wich is nowhere near as good as a crispy pan fry.

Sorry you missed Love's Custard Pies. They're amazing. I ordered seven at Thanksgiving to disperse to friends and family. The prices were slightly less than Achatz, Zingerman, Grand Traverse and the like, but they were definitely as good as any custard pie I've ever had. I loved the caramel pecan. The rest of the family raved about the German chocolate and chess pies. And to top it off, they delivered the pies to my house the night before Thanksgiving.

Dining near Cranbrook [suburban Detroit]

Any suggestions for a Friday night dinner for six close to Cranbrook?

Unfortunately we have one very unadventurous eater in the group, a real meat-and-potatoes only kind of guy. He'll also eat lasagne, pizza or chicken wings. The rest of the group is much more willing to -- and looks forward to -- trying something new.

We have people coming to and from Rochester and Livonia to attend the event at Cranbrook, so staying semi-close to that area would work best.

Thanks in advance for your help!
