Meatballs

Where can I try real Sweedish meatballs without going to a furniture store cafeteria? Don't get me wrong...I enjoy cafeteria meatballs after a day of futon shopping, but I don't always feel like going futon shopping. And I get the feeling I could get better quality. Any suggestions?

Addicted to Nicole's sandwiches

I always stop in to take a look around when I'm at the Thursday farmers market, but I've never actually bought anything there. So far I've just enjoyed looking at all the gourmet products they have. I will make an effort to save some room and not stuff myself on kettle corn and tamales at the farmers market so I can try that nice sandwich you described above.

Chinese Bakeries

Has anyone tried Vanille in San Marino on Huntington and San Gabriel? I always drive by but have never tried it. Do they just sell birthday/wedding cakes?

Ethnic Asian Food in Thousand Oaks

Hahaha...my mom's coworker opened a box of durian cookies (why she bought durian cookies...idk), and then security cleared the building b/c the other floor thought there was a gas leak. It was later discovered the smell was from the cookies. It wasn't even from fresh fruit! Now thats potent!

Chinese Bakeries

Awww wish I could help you there. I don't remember seeing that cake, but it reminds me of the wonderful Philippino Ube cakes. OMG those are so good. And bright purple! You can get ube cakes at Philippino bakeries in Hollywood near Kaiser Permanente or Rowland Heights. I'll keep an eye out for chestnut cake though.

Simple Simon's in Riverside

Has anyone been to Simple Simon's Restaurant in Downtown Riverside? I used to go there all the time when I was in college. I would daydream about their hot mediterranean open faced sandwich, the chicken tarragon salad, and the curry turkey salad when I should have been paying attention in my organic chemistry class! Its a very hustle bustle place at lunch, and the line to order would be out the door at noon, but its such a great place to eat if you are near the Mission Inn. You couldn't tell from the outside, but inside its a big cavernous space with a long line of sandwich makers churning out hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, vegan sandwiches, soups, and lots of baked goodies. I also love the chicken apple sausage they have for breakfast. Coffee Depot on Mission Inn Ave. near Sevilla is also a great place to go in Riverside.

Neptune's Net vs Malibu Seafood

I really like the fish & chips at Malibu Seafood! I went to Neptune's Net once, and they were alright. Since MS is farther south, I'd rather just go there and not have to drive all the way up to NN.

Chinese Bakeries

What is your favorite chinese bakery? I always go to Kee Wah on Atlantic Blvd & Garvey Ave in Monterey Park, but sometimes I go to Diamond Bakery across the street. I love the baked char siu baos, taro buns, red bean buns, egg tarts, fruit custard tarts, curry beef pies, custard buns, and moon cakes, birthday cakes....

IMHO, the frosting on cakes from chinese bakeries is much better than the greasy frosting from a lot of other places.

Should I branch out and try other bakeries? Where?

Best Burger in LA

Animal Style = grilled onions, mustard, extra sauce, extra toppings. Same size patty as non-Animal Style. Not on the menu. You have to ask for it specifically. You can also ask for your fries "animal style" which means they put all the sauce and grilled onions on top of the fries.

I think an IN-N-Out burger is the best in terms of FAST FOOD burgers. I'm sure the higher end establishments can make a fancier, meatier (more expensive) burger, but if you want a quick, drive-thru, burger-fries-and-a-shake, fast food lunch, this is the way to go. They even mention In-N-Out on the movie Super Size Me as the BEST alternative to other fast food burgers! Its the only one the Super Size Me guy and the Fast Food Nation guy seemed to like.

Question about Pancakes in LA...

Yes!!! Try The Original Pantry Cafe in Downtown! They have great buckwheat pancakes. Plus its a historic landmark. Expect long lines on weekend mornings. Just get a newspaper and expect the wait. Or go on a weekday.

Scallion Pancake

China Islamic has awesome scallion pancakes. They are very flavorful and not too greasy. They also have wonderful sesame flat bread, with a crisp top and soft, warm, scallion laden center. I love it with a nice house special hot pot! Since its a muslim restaurant, no pork on the menu.

Searching for the Best Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumplings)???

Pearl's in Monterey Park is good too. They are in the same center as Sam Woo, (On Garvey, east of Atlantic) in the corner next to the hair salon. XLB is yummy there. Their specialty is the fried dumplings though.

new restaurant/wine bar in pasadena?

Heritage Wine Company. Its on 155 N Raymond Ave. I went there last Sunday. It was very nice. I thought it had a pretty chill atmosphere. Not too pretentious. They could use more help though. The waitress was running back and forth and apologized for making us wait.

Tofu Festival? More like Nofu Festival

Alas, it wasn't as good as previous years. Nothing innovative going on with tofu (that I could find), and too much fried meat on a stick. I thought there were more t-shirt and jewelry vendors than food booths. They used to use that street it was on JUST for the product vendors, not for the food too. I saw that the lot they used before had construction, but its too bad they couldn't find another venue that would have made the festival more cohesive. I thought the split-layout made it confusing and difficult to see everything that was offered. And it was soooo hot! I had to swipe a folding chair from one of the volunteer booths for my grandma. There wasn't enough seating and shade for the elderly. I also wish they had food demonstrations like last year! Last year I met Iron Chef Morimoto! I didn't even realize there was a stage set up with martial arts demonstrations until much later because it was way off to the side. Well, hopefully they will be able to use that lot again next year, or find a better venue where everyone can enjoy the festival all together. Despite it all, I will be back next year. I really want to love this festival as much as I love tofu. One positive...I liked the virgin tofu margaritas!
