When did noodles become pasta?

When that damn Marco Polo stole noodle making methods back to his own country.

Organized food- giving- ever heard of this?

Sure why not? I have heard of a group paying for 6 months of housekeeping after someone had twins.

Great Dim Sum == Great Dinner??

Sorry dim sum not served for dinner.

Charged more than menu price [moved from New York State]

Yes they are.

Going to Hong Kong and have a 5 hour layover in Beijing, what to do?

You left out one very important detail, what time will you be arriving Beijing?

Hong Kong style Cha Chang Tang in San Lorenzo.

Thanks for the quick reply. We went to one in Foster City, at the former Mr. Fong's. They seem to do this right, down to the attitude of the wait staff.

Hong Kong style Cha Chang Tang in San Lorenzo.

Just been totally frustrated watching a news report on a HK style cha chang tang in San Lorenzo, opened by a former Cisco employee. So after the segment they never mentioned the address of the place, and just briefly mention the name, something with "ice" in it.

Does anyone know where this place is?

Tripadvisor being investigated [moved from NAF]

This so called complaint and investigation is completely bogus. Anyone with any experience using these sites knows that there are of course faked reviews, posted either by business owners or the competition. One very easy way to tell the faked reviews: those written by posters with zero previous reviews, and posts only one review either giving high praise or slamming a place.

Etiquette Question

1. No problem. The only reason you'll be looked down upon is because you'll be seated and the waiter will be standing.

Going to Hong Kong and have a 5 hour layover in Beijing, what to do?

I wouldn't do it. Depending on your passport, you may be able to be in transit without a visa. But since you need to be back to the airport to pass through security and boarding, so you effectively only have 3 hours. If you hit Beijing traffic you can easily miss your flight.

Can one live on Trader Joe's alone?

TJ's sells fresh meat veggies and fruit. Just because he don't eat those don't mean TJ's are not healthy. At least I hope he don't drink 2 buck chuck, does he?

Why is airport food so terrible at many US east coast airports?

I don't see much difference. The main reason why airport food is mostly bad is because the restaurants don't have repeat customers and they go for the lowest denominator: cheap ingredients delivered by Sysco.

Sacramento Restaurant pretty close to airport?

We love cf cheng, probably the best Chinese restaurant in all of Sacto. It's kind of hole in the wall in a strip mall next to Arco. We usually order from the "Chinese" menu (not in Chinese, but if you are Chinese they give you this menu instead of the "regular" one. Request it.).

Unique to Sacramento/only in Sacramento Dinner?

I don't remember any dinner cruise on the delta. Besides that's not unique even if there is one.

Unique to Sacramento/only in Sacramento Dinner?

There's nothing that I can think of that's unique to Sacramento. There are some fine restaurants, but nothing unique.

"Service Charge" Added Onto Bill, What Gives? [moved from LA]

It's not a problem if this is disclosed ahead of time. Yes it's a practice in heavily tourist area restaurants where foreign tourists are not used to tipping practices here.

So Your Friends Want to Go to A Chain Restaurant.... so What? :} [moved from Not About Food]

Well this is Chowhound, not Face Book. So yes posters here are concerned about, well, food, sometimes to the detriment of friendship. I agree with you in general. But again think about the context on this website.

Poll: Would you eat a dog

Why not? I have eaten dog (in a stew). I actually don't like it nearly as much as pork. But just asking this questions certainly reflects a cultural bias. Would Indians eat beef? Would Muslims eat pork?

Need info about the yin and yang of Chinese nutrition theory

One very important is the constitution of the person. The food must be beneficial to the person. So if a person is either hot or cool constitutionally determines what kind of food he/she should eat. So you need to have a Chinese medicine doctor determine for you whether you are hot or cool.

Celebrating the 4th in Shanghai

Agordo the smartshanghai web site is not correct. What's the correct spelling of the entire address please?

Feeling "out of place" at a restaurant

That's interesting. I used to work at a restaurant inside a famous Chicago hotel, where they don't allow single woman to sit at the bar. Their solution? The restaurant manager always sat with the single woman.

HK: how to approach (non-vegetarian) restaurants for a vegetarian option

Buddhists are usually strict vegetarians. Just tell the restaurant that your wife is Buddhist and don't eat meat.

Which area of Sac?

BYOB, what's the law? (LA restaurant question.)

There is no sale in BYO. This place I am talking about don't even charge corkage.

BYOB, what's the law? (LA restaurant question.)

So why would a restaurant without a license boldly advertise their BYO policy on their own web site?

BYOB, what's the law? (LA restaurant question.)

I am posting here because there is a discussion at a different web site regarding the legality of bringing your own bottle to a restaurant. Seems there is a restaurant in LA that would let you BYO with no corkage fee. The catch is that the restaurant does not have a liquor license. Someone posted that this is illegal and the restaurant can be fined and never will get a license if they are caught doing this. But the BYO policy is prominently posted on the restaurant's own web site.

So what's the law here? Is the restaurant doing something illegal?

Looking for a Chinese restaurant with really great authentic Chinese food AND really great Americanized Chinese food.

My standard for very good Chinese food in the Chinatown area is usually R&G, and they certainly do Americanized Chinese food with all the tourist trade. How do you tell if Americanized Chinese food is "anything special"?

Service at restaurants

That's not bad service. That just performance. It's part of the schtick.
