Same here, except I'm a little closer than you. The #5 never fails to satisfy!

Sunfish Cellars Wine Bar - Lilydale

Haven't checked it out yet, but I did browse the wine store. Some good deals on wine not readily available around here, but also some easily-available labels at a higher price than other local places. I'm looking forward to doing a wine tasting there.

Skyway Lunches

Zen Box skyway is not all-deep fried. You can get Yaki Soba, Teriyaki Chicken, or tofu. Only a couple of the items are deep fried, like the Chicken Kara-age or the croquettes.

Check out the Tea House (in the skyway on the corner of 4th Street and 2nd Ave.). They always have a couple of deep-fried items, like General Tso's and Kung Pao, but they have great Chicken & Mushroom (not spicy, really flavorful), House Tofu, and House Spicy Pork. The Szechuan Green Beans are good, too.

Mai Village

"But then again, Meritage and Vincent's aren't very approachable. Salut is."

Really? I have found both places to be very welcoming on several occasions. Salut as well, but it's not on the level of Meritage or Vincent...not that it's trying to be, but still...

Best Cuban sandwich in Twin Cities

Agreed, the bread makes all the difference. I'm surprised so many people like the Tony O Cuban from Target Field. The bread on the one I had was flavorless and chalky.

If you're not too much of a purist, the Muddy Pig Cuban is good. Which Wich has a passable version as well.

Mai Village

Hate to pile on, but I have to agree with the above posts. We haven't been to Mai Village in years. Overpriced, underwhelming, and my wife (who is South Asian) always reacted badly to the food.

Downtown Vietnamese-The Bamboo Shoot

Haven't tried them since the changover from the $1 an item days. It looks interesting, but if I'm in the part of the skyway, I'm going to the Tea House.

Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!

Agree with you on both counts.

I can't fault Surdyk's TOO much. I have always considered Surdyk's to be on the higher end of beer prices. When I go there, I go for wine (truth be told, I haven't been there for quite some time...the playing field is much more level than it was 15 years ago).

I like most of Surly's offerings and I will always have a pint of Furious if it is on tap at an establishment. But it's a rare occasion when I will spend +/- $20 on a bottle of beer. And there is no way in hell I'm lining up outside a brewery to get a 'limited edition' brew.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to get a six-pack of the latest Unchained Black Ale. It's a kickass, fairly priced, excellent (yet again!) brew from Summit. No disrepect to Surly, but my heart (and liver) is pledged to Mark Stutrud!

Mpls Food Trucks - Who's The Best?

The Yum Yum Rice Bowl from World Street Kitchen is currently at the top of my food truck offering list. An amazing blend of flavors and textures. The soft cooked egg in the middle is pure genius.

New asian food truck in dt Minneapolis - Vellee Deli

I went back today. I got there at noon and there were two people ahead of me waiting to order and one person waiting for their food. The Mojo baguette and the Kraken taco were marked as out. I ordered the Currito and the Vellee Rolls. Total wait time from order to delivery: 3 minutes!

There were 3 or 4 people in the truck and things are indeed streamlined. The Currito was huge...the size of a Chipotle burrito, and even heavier. Very tasty, with a nice amount of heat. The Vellee Rolls were delicious. I'm glad I got to try Vellee and I can only echo MNFoodieLover's thoughts. Check this place out!

New asian food truck in dt Minneapolis - Vellee Deli

I tried to go on Wednesday. There were about 10 people in front of us waiting to order. Then we realized there were 15-20 people who had ALREADY ordered and were still waiting for their food. One of our party was in a time crunch and we couldn't wait around. We ended up walking over to World Street Kitchen.

Too bad--the menu at Vellee is very intriguing. I agree with kriminalrat that they need to streamline. Also, as far as I could tell, there were only two people in the truck, one of whom had to take orders and work the line. I'll go back, but it will be on a day when I can be out there right around 11:00. Any later, I'm worried the wait will be too long and they may be out of some items.

the Smack Shack Downtown Minny Food Truck

They are indeed as good as they ever were, but at $12 a pop, I won't be going there often. That will buy a sit-down lunch at Vincent, D'Amico Kitchen, and several other downtown places. A 42% increase in price from one year to the next is a little over the top.

Rusty Taco

The Lovely Wife was running some errands in the neighborhood and she stopped by Rusty Taco last night for some take out. We had the Rusty Taco, the BBQ brisket taco, and the fish taco (all recommended by the employee she spoke to). The pineapple in the Rusty did make the tortilla soggy, but not to a terrible degree IMO. It was very tasty in combination with the achiote pork. I really liked the BBQ, it had a great smoky flavor. Fish tacos were good, with a crunchy coating.

She brought home the menu for me to look over--a good selection of beer (and wine, I guess--no wines were listed on there, but she told they do have them). A small selection of tap beers for $3.00 (Dos Equis, Hamms, Coors Light, Fulton). A bigger selection of bottles and big cans for $3.50 and $4.00. Tacos are $2.50, sides are $2.00.

She told me the parking situation wasn't bad at all, but it was a Thursday night--she surmised that it will be a real mess on the weekend.

I liked Rusty Taco a lot and will definitely go there again.

Black Sheep Coal Fired Pizza: MSP

I went to the St. Paul Black Sheep Pizza for the first time last Saturday afternoon. Very happy to see it in the Rossmor Building, just down the hill from my house!

The Lovely Wife had stopped in the week they opened to pick up a pizza and met Jordan (owner) at that time. He greeted us at the door and told her he was happy she brought the husband this time!

The St. Paul location is on the basment level, like the Minneapolis location. The floor plan is more open. It helps that there are windows running along the Robert Street and 10th Street sides of the space.

We had a terrific Farmers Market Salad with grilled asparagus and roasted potatoes, served with a great tarragon dressing. We also split a #5 pizza.

Service was friendly and prompt, and the music was a welcome change from the usual muzak--Sly Stone, Lou Reed, and The Clash!

We will be going back regularly.

Forum?

I have been underwhelmed by the food and service both times I've been in. They need to keep somebody's fingers away from the music station..."Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam was playing the last time I stopped in.

Forum has been on the MN Revenue liquor posting list for non-payment of taxes since December. Which is why there are only four tap beer handles on a 10-tap station at the bar. And Ringo is already history. It doesn't bode well. A shame, because it really is a beautiful space.

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives might be returning to Minnesota

I had to laugh when I saw the suggestion for the Gopher Bar. I can just imagine the Food Network producer asking the staff, "Umm...could you take down the 'Obama=Socialism' poster before we turn the cameras on?"

A little Guy goes a long way with me, but it's cool that he showcases these places all over the country. I appreciate that he's been to the Twin Cities twice, instead of coming here once and figuring that was enough.

Um, possibly a good find.....? any input on Bayou Cajun?

I've been there a few times. Good, if not great--and reasonably priced. I haven't tried the Korean items yet. The last time I was there, I said 'thank you' in Korean (Kamsahamnida) to the woman at the register. She giggled...the same reaction I get when I speak Singhalese to my Sri Lankan mother-in-law. Must have something to do with my Minny-soda whiteness.

Fire at the Nook: "It's Totaled"

Fork the Fire was organized by local restaurants after the Heidi's/Blackbird fire. They picked a specific day where they all donated a portion of their sales to offset the losses to the owners.

I saw a report on WCCO-TV this morning. They said it sounded like it was just a kitchen fire and it wasn't too serious...let's hope so.

I'll second The Inn. Less than 2 blocks from the W. You can skip the cab and have more money for cocktails!

The Strip Club

Wow. Shoe leather? Everything is subjective, of course, but I keep coming back to the NY Strip when I go to TSC. The pork belly is great, and there was an awesome marlin special this summer, but I gotta have my strip fix on a regular basis.

To the earlier poster who said "If the beef were so good, why would you cover it in blue cheese or shallots?"...you can get the sauce on the side. Or not at all. It's your choice.
