Pretty good ramen at Samurai
I can't promise Tokyo level, but it was pretty good for Boston standards
Pretty good ramen at Samurai
I know hounds are always looking for spots to get a ramen fix. Surprisingly I've had a couple of good bowls at Samurai on Boylston. They advertise it on their sidewalk sign, but it's not on the regular menu.
They offer vegetable, shrimp or pork. I've only ordered the pork so can't attest to the other options. They also only offer miso ramen. Noodles had a nice bite to them, flavorful roasted pork belly slices, nice rich broth and topped with a raw egg. One of the better, if not the best, ramen I've had in Boston. And I didn't have to travel all the way to Porter Square which is nice.
Just my PSA for the day!
Places in Copley/Back Bay area to eat a bagged lunch
Kind of a different question. There's lots of places to buy lunch in the area, but I'm trying to save some money by bringing lunch with me to work. Can anyone suggest some good spots in the area where I can sit and eat a bagged lunch? Eating in my office can get a little monotonous and I'm often bringing leftovers so it can stink up the place depending on what I'm eating. Plus it helps to get out of the office and take a real break.
I know the library has a great outdoor courtyard, but that's not a good option in the winter months. There's also a cafe there, but I don't feel right bringing my own food to a place that sells food and taking up one of their tables. Is the mall my only other option?
Thanks everyone!
Orange blossom water??
Does anyone know where I could find orange blossom/flower water? It's used in Indian cooking and (also great for your skin). I was going to start checking around at Asian/Indian food stores, but if anyone could steer me to a place where they know I can find it that would be great appreciated.
Thanks!
Kitchen martyrs
Oh my god. This is me!!!
I hate washing lettuce and making salad (except for the dressing) so that's one task that I am happy to delegate.
If I need someone to do something more involved, I pull out all the equipment they need and hand it to them so that they aren't using the wrong knives, cutting boards, etc. Depending on who it is I will sometimes start the task for them and let them take over so that they know how I want it done.
Usually though, I tell people that I'm all set and that they can save their help for when it's time to clean up.
where to buy good quality (uncooked) chicken wings?
I could have been more specific: Is Mayflower's chicken hormone-free, cage-free, organically-raised, etc? Being on chowhound I just assumed most people would know what I meant.
As far as the chicken wings at Whole Foods: the hormone-free wings are delicious and certainly a much more flavorful and less scary looking option than the regular gigantic supermarket packaged wings. I would choose the chicken from my meat CSA over Whole Foods any day, but they don't offer wings and if they did it wouldn't be enough to feed a large group.
"thanks" for the rant.
where to buy good quality (uncooked) chicken wings?
Do you know if Mayflower's chicken naturally raised?
where to buy good quality (uncooked) chicken wings?
I have gotten very good party wings from Whole Foods in the past.
mail order food gifts from boston-area business
Formaggio Kitchen can ship gourmet items and specialty baskets. They have some options online, but I've also gone in and asked for them to put together a gift basket based on the occasion, budget and a general idea of what kinds of items I wanted included. You could definitely call them and put an order in over the phone. They do overnight delivery so you can send perishables.
Formaggio Kitchen is arguably the best specialty/gourmet shop in the Boston area. Their cheese selection is fantastic and extensive. They aren't cheap, but neither is their product.

Late dinner in Kennebunk
I had a feeling that would be the only late option. We're already planning to head there on Saturday. Maybe we'll get a snack on Friday night too!
Late dinner in Kennebunk
Hi everyone,
We'll be heading up to Kennebunk Friday, but won't be arriving until 9 PM or so. Any suggestions of restaurants that serve that late?
Thanks!
Best food when you're sick
Pho broth has star anise in it which has medicinal properties. Tamiflu is actually derived from star anise.
Asking for a steak "medium rare"
Ditto on this! I just started ordering rare instead of MR and realized that I love rare steak. If it ends up coming out out MR I'm still happy with it. Anything over that it gets sent back.
Best food-related gift you ever received or gave?
We received a year subscription to a Bacon of the Month club as a wedding gift. It was the best thing ever!
ISO Salsa Lizano, fresh epazote, plantains...
believe it or not, I saw Salsa Lizano at Ming's Market in the South End. If they have it there, they may carry it at Super 88 as well.
Chinese Delivery in the South End
Hong Kong Cafe by Fenway also delivers to the South End. American Chinese food. They have good days and bad days. Overall it's passable.
Friend wants to eat scallops with coral
Erbaluce has had them in the past, but not sure if they do anymore.

Budget food around Copley Square
Shino Express is now called Snappy Sushi.
Thai Basil on Newbury St. has very inexpensive lunch combos (under $10). Their regular menu isn't crazy expensive either.
The Globe on Boylston. Casual, but good sandwiches and entrees.
Steve's Greek on corner of Newbury and Hereford.

Where to get Soft Shell Crabs
I was wondering the same thing. The cleaning of soft shell crabs involves removing all the innards and furry lung pieces and cutting the faces off. I can't imagine anything would survive after that, no matter how fresh!
Dinner between PIT and Seven Springs resort
We're flying to Pittsburgh from Boston then driving to the Seven Springs resort. By the time we get to the resort it will be a little late for dinner so I was hoping to find something yummy between the airport and the resort. We're not familiar with the area at all, so any recommendations that won't take us too off course would be ideal.
Any cuisine with a moderate price range. Can be a take-out spot or a nice restaurant with a good bar we can eat at.
Thanks in advance!
Morels at Russos: very good, not cheap
Ooh. That sounds delicious!
It's hard enough to find a place the sells morels, let alone "cheap". As far as I know Russo's has the best price for fresh morels in the area. They fluctuate between $25-$29/lb. Last spring I was at Whole Foods in early spring and saw a bin of fresh morels. Excited to see morels for the first time that season I started loading up a bag. Then I glanced at the price sign: $59.99/lb!!!!! I put the shrooms back and headed over to Russo's who was selling them for $29.99/lb.
$29/lb sounds crazy, but the odds that anyone is actually going to get a full pound of mushrooms is slim. I can't even imagine the chore it would be to clean a pound of morels!
Your top 5 Allston eats
Somehow I have made it 9 years in Boston without really exploring the Allston chow. I've been to Privus and Shabu Zen, but that's really it. Yoma is on my list, but I haven't made it there yet. I am ashamed and hungry.
I almost titled this "Your favorite Allston eats", but knowing that there are potentially a ton of places there I figured narrowing it to Top 5 would help keep things focused.
Looking forward to your responses!

Help - Guidance in washing lettuce
I can see how a washing machine would be very effective, but I would be concerned about any detergent or fabric softener residue in the machine getting on the food.
Where to get Soft Shell Crabs
I haven't looked around yet, but I know New Deal has them every season.
As far as restaurants, I second Peach Farm. Also, a couple of years ago I went to Bernard's at the Chestnut Hill Mall for a quick bite after shopping and was pleasantly surprised that they had a special of soft shell crab that day. 2 HUGE fried, juicy delicious soft shells. Bernard's doesn't normally wow me, but I still think about this dish and my mouth waters.

Rao's Coffee Roaster Co. Ethiopian Yrgacheffe
Russo's sells Rao's coffee. Not sure if they have the specific one that you're looking for though.
Salt & Pepper whole shrimp with head?
fifth! And if you can get it made with the live shrimp from the tank they're even better!
Abundance of Snap Peas. What to do with them?
Hello all,
I have more snap peas than I know what to do with. Any suggestions on how I can use them up? Can I make a snap pea soup or would they be too fibrous?
Thanks!
