TOKYO: Best Nomikai Spots Along Yamanote Line?

A co-worker is moving to Sapporo and a group of 30 guys want to take him out for a final night of drinking and revelry. We are looking for a unique izakaya, bar or party space that can accommodate with food and drinks. Looking for something in or around Shibuya, Ebisu, Meguro, Harajuku but open to other stations along Yamanote. The guys in the group are non-salarymen creative types, all food and drink savvy, and enjoy interacting with ladies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ivan Ramen on TV this Saturday morning

Haven't been to Ivan Ramen yet, but he must be doing something right... He's go his own cup ramen out now: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fg20090227f2.html

Oden in L.A. County?

As far as izakaya, in the past I've seen oden on the specials menu at Honda-ya (Little Tokyo). Should be a seasonal thing. Why not make it at home? You can find everything you need at Mitsuwa, Marukai, etc...

Shin Okinawa Izakaya

Nice report. Never thought I'd see a proper Okinawan spot in LA for some reason. Is umi budou on the menu?

YAKITORI BINCHO owns all. BEST in LA!!! Yea, this may sound super-hype but I stand by what I like. Werd. (Maxi-Review w/ pics)

I'd like to know as well. Any updates here would be appreciated.

food by LA transportation

Never been to California Market by rail, but the walk from the station is approx 2 1/2 blocks (North on Western) from the Wilshire/Western station. I'd imagine it takes about 5 minutes or so.

food by LA transportation

Grand Central Market is a good spot for Downtown eats and buys. Basically right next to the (4th and Hill Street) exit of the Pershing Square Metro Redline station. Not even half a block away... http://www.grandcentralsquare.com

Taking the Redline to Wilshire & Western will put you smack dab in the (middle?) of Korea Town, which is technically outside of Downtown proper, but very close. My favorite Korean market nearby is California Market on Western. Amazing prices on produce here and a pretty good meat selection: http://www.californiamarketstores.com/

L'ANGELO CAFE downtown, anyone... anyone??

Sorry. Just referring to the fact that Angelique recently announced that they will be open on Sundays. Not too sure about the New Moon specifics.

What do you recommend at Wood Spoon? Don't get over there as much as I'd like. It's a great little spot.

No problem afs and welcome to Downtown (if you're new to the area.) You too 9th and B'way... You guys have a lot going on as far newish chow spots over there on 9th (L'Angolo, Wood Spoon, Tiara) and old ones changing their hours to accomodate us all (Shekarchi, New Moon, Angelique, etc). Please keep the rest of us downtowners posted on the immediate area over there.

Best Downtown hummus goes to Shawarma Kitchen... Semi smooth, creamy with olive oil. They also have a side dish of hummus topped w/ shawarma. A short review here: http://gridskipper.com/travel/food/shawarma-kitchen-hummus-the-way-it-was-meant-to-be-223906.php

New in Downtown?

There is a new neighborhood Brazilian spot that is making noise (and serving dinner) called Wood Spoon. The space and prices are modest compared with the "oldies" that you listed in your original post, but the food is tasty and the menu is interesting.

lebanese/persian in downtown

In Downtown, both Persian and Lebanese can be found at Grand Central Market.

The Persian place, which has been around a few years and has amassed a loyal Persian clientele from the nearby Jewelry district, is called Kabab & More. It's very good as a lunch option. They specialize in various grilled meat kebabs served with rice, grilled tomatoes, grilled peppers, pita & salad and also serve homemade Persian stews. The key here is to call in your order in advance or have them deliver, as they get packed during peak lunch hours. The wait can be upwards of 15+ minutes. I always order the "Soltani" plate - a combo of "charboiled filet mignon and strips of ground beef."

The Lebanese place, SHAWARMA KITCHEN, is relatively new but seems to be doing pretty brisk business with the Downtown lunch crowd. They offer meat and chicken shawarma plates & sandwiches, falafel, rotisserie chicken w/ garlic sauce, hummus, etc. Everything is homemade. This place also delivers throughout Downtown. I think they have a whole chicken w/ pita and garlic sauce special for $4, though that may be weekends only... I've tried most dishes here but always go for the chicken shawarma now.
