"Sauce" on the Danforth

i will declare that, when in Brugges, we struggled to find a good and affordable restaurant. we ended up eating the spaghetti bolognese at 't Brugs Beertje where we were drinking.
no clue if it was made in house or out of the can, but it went really well with the heavy Belgian ales.

"Sauce" on the Danforth

the name sounds gross.
the concept sounds strange.

Goths eating fresh pasta??

Anyways, I've been a firm believer that Danforth East (between Pape and Greenwood) is going to be Toronto's next hot spot. subway accessible, affordable rent, lots of old restaurants to take over for cheap.

La Carnita finds permanent home on college st

I've popped by the space a few times.
Its really nice.
Great attention to (little) details. Its chique and fun and arty and grubby all at the same time.

they're also taking some reservations, so you won't have the GE-esque line-up issue.

start the countdown, kids! my guess? 2-4 weeks until they open.

Yogurty's Froyo - new Avenue Road location

yep.
got the wife hooked.
went last night and had rootbeer w/key lime pie. the key lime pie flavour was a little weak, to be honest, but its still worlds above what Menchies does.
tried the cotton candy. its not nauseatingly sweet. you are right.
the choco peanut butter was also really good.

my issue w/Yogurty's? they're opening on every bloody block.

Burger Week - $5 Burger specials at various restaurants in Toronto - The Grid newspaper - may 30 to june 2, 2012

i don't understand it, though.
places like Keriwa cafe: they doing the $5 burger for sit-down customers only? might sound like a dumb question, but i'm envisioning them having a separate bbq outside for it.

Kinton Ramen - First Taste

Two questions:

1. Any idea if they use MSG? my heart says they do
2. THeir broth is pork based, but is there any fish in it? I've read that they may mix their pork broth with a bit of fish.

Thai One On, (Avenue Rd north of Wilson) Aw c'mon, I should have known though!

1. i don't care if an Asian chef is in the back of an Asian restaurant
2. comments like "was there an Asian chef?" are akin to "I'll buy my sushi from Sobeys because I saw someone Asian rolling it SO IT HAS TO BE GOOD AMIRIGHT??"
3. not sure if i should commend you or scold you for actually posting that you ate at Thai One On
4. I'm guessing Ho Li Chow was closed?

sigh!

Yogurty's Froyo - new Avenue Road location

truth be told, i much prefer Yogurty's.
The yogurt tastes much better. at Menchies, i kind of have to squint my eyes and think "I guess it tastes like __________". At Yogurty's, it actually tastes like what its supposed to taste like.
last week, i got a root beer and birthday cake cup. it was really tasty.
the interior is better, yes. but the 2 strange things about Yogurty's:

1) the sample cups are kind of hidden
2) the spoons are facing the cashier. you either have to ask for one (or more) or hope they give you one.

Gilead Cafe review - The food is EXTRAORDINARY! A must for any foodie!

i've been trying it off and on since it opened.

i admit that i really dug the manhattan feel of walking down that alley to get to the resto.

i wish i could remember what happened, but they once really botched up our lunch. it was a relatively unpleasant dining experience. i was on their butts about the food that they had forgotten to bring out. i think they served us our lunch over a 30 minute period (i.e. first lunch dish came out and 30 minutes later, the last came out). no apologies, no "let me remedy that".

we've been there a few more times for various reasons and, while its a quick drive from our house, we have no desire to go back there. I'd rather hit a place like Beast for brunch instead.

Duke of Kent review - Authentic British Pub at Yonge & Eglinton!

the beer list is indeed quite drab.
i've eaten there a few times over the years. "unmemorable" is the best way to describe it. sorry, but hal2010 and I are on the same page.

Gilead Cafe review - The food is EXTRAORDINARY! A must for any foodie!

cute location. crappy "service". long wait times for food. expensive for cafeteria-style atmosphere. occasionally very tasty, sometimes just good but not great.

I feel like JK's ship sailed a long time ago.

Toronto Life's 25 best burgers

when i read Apache and Golden star's inclusion, i already knew it was a joke of a list. then they included a few burgers that are questionably bur gers (HRVATI?).

in the end, lists are made for people to debate and to get mega-pageclicks. to Toronto Life got it right, i guess.

Grand Electric

while i agree with you on the guac and chips (its ok but not worth the wallet-space or belly-fill), i'm not sure how one could say that their flavours weren't complex.
even my least favourite taco - the pig tail terrine - is still brilliantly put together. its a gentle taco -very subtle tastes and very smooth.
the pork taco with the mango salsa is brilliantly executed. there's a sweet and citrus kick that balances the pork out brilliantly. i think its the best thought-out taco they make.
and the beef cheek taco flavours are excellent as well. they're quite intense.

not sure what you're expecting from tacos, but I kid not when I say that nary a week goes by where I don't think about going to GE to grab a pint and some tacos. its not worth the 2 hour wait (nor do i think it should be listed in the top 10 lists of Toronto restaurants, but that's another argument), but the tacos are quite excellent and very well executed.

best salted caramel ice cream in Toronto?

check if The Sweet Escapes makes some. their ice cream is made fresh and in small batches

The best chocolate chip cookie in Toronto?

whomever makes the ones that the Only Cafe carries...mmmmm

Critique my "must try" list for Toronto!

its a great list. i'd take Tacos el Asador off that list. with Grand Electric around, its really not much of a destination. its cheap and easy and decent.

another option: Indalecio Marroquin 126 Rogers Rd

VEGETARIAN CRISPY DUCK IN TORONTO

I had it years ago at the vegan chinese resto on Dundas (north side) 1 block east of Bathurst. someting Buddah Cafe. they have a whole array of feat (fake meat)

Fuzz Box: East Coast donair in Toronto

I went for lunch.
First, the owner (Neil) is such a nice guy. On that merit alone, I hope he succeeds.

I ordered the Nova Scotia donair and pondered the fried pepperoni. While I waited for the donair, Neil brought me some fried pepperoni to try. Hot damn, they were tasty. Like chips, but hot. And meaty!

I took my donair home so i could nerdily take a photo of it and pour myself a beer. The donair was very nice. It had a good level of spice to it, so be warned. I'd also suggest that those expecting it to be like shawarma may be very disappointed. The donair sauce plus the spice may be a strange combination for some people. its spicy, meaty and sweet at the same time. Not sure if that tickles your fancy, but i sure liked it.

Sarah's and The Only Cafe patrons must be laughing. The Fuzz Box makes a great snack for those evenings of consuming bevvies. I'd personally order the super size. No clue why one would order the small size. The regular made for a good small lunch, but if you're hungry? Supersize that bad boy.

Trans Canada road trip

you looking to buy in bulk or at a restaurant?
the place where we used to buy would be a 15 min drive off of the TCH. but there are going to be places downtown.

Trans Canada road trip

I've done the drive from Winnipeg to Toronto.
trust me when I say that there's nothing to eat once you past Thunder Bay. you literally have truck stops until Sault Ste Marie (someone correct me if I'm wrong or if things have changed over the past 12 years).

I ate at a relatively nice restaurant in SSM. cannot remember what its called, but its on the highway. i don't think there are a million choices

As an aside, if you want any Winnipeg suggestions, let me know. just name the meal and the day of the week.

The Riverdale Perk

I saw this cafe during my afternoon bike ride. I've never noticed it before, even though my (limited) research says its been open for a few years.

It loos really cute. just wondering if anyone has eaten there.

There's a link on a review: http://www.blogto.com/cafes/riverdale-perk

Fuzz Box: East Coast donair in Toronto

Donairs are the best post-drinking food. Its like gravy pizza in Ottawa.
Not sure how excited I'd be to eat either of them sober.
Donair is slightly below gyros and shawarma on the food chain and slightly above hot dogs.

and that sauce...we used to call it "jizz sauce". when you get a donair, you'll know why.

La Carnita finds permanent home on college st

wasn't La Carnita before Grand Electric? so i could argue that Colin was the second in Rome.

Considering the 20-50 person line-up at Grand Electric and how La Carnita and GE are a 10 min drive from one another, i think that Toronto has lots of room for 2 taco joints. Just ask Burgers Priest how their 2nd location is doing, or how Holy Chuck is faring.

I'd also argue that Andrew was incredibly smart doing his pop-up restaurant. he's a graphics designer by trade. considering that most restaurants fail, why would you quit a good paying job, toss $$ into a restaurant and lose your savings if you don't think it would take off?

La Carnita's drummed up hype. GE had the Black Hoof cache as its pre-open hype and La Carnita has its self-created hype to fill it up from day one.

Why can't Torontonians want a win-win? this isn't binary. you don't have to be off or on. you can have two "ons"

La Carnita finds permanent home on college st

i find your statement to be 100% incorrect.

their only logistical failure, in my opinion, was Saturday night's event at the Brickworks. 1200 people RSVP and that was capacity. Twice the amount showed. so Andrew et al. get a pass.

Its the same thing as Grand Electric. the line-up is part of the hype and vibe. not sure if you want pre-assembled tacos, but you're never going to get it with La Carnita. if you've ever had one of their tacos, each one is carefully assembled, not slapped together.

but yes, the location will be rocking for its first few months. such is the life of places that serve great food.

ISO: farro

is it easy to find?
i've never encountered it.

Bestellen

hitting it in a few weeks. its steak tartare's on my to-do list.

With warm weather are fiddleheads/wild leeks early?

i saw that Pizzeria Libretto had them on one of their pizzas.
ramps have jumped the shark.

Dining out during passover (aka. without carbs)

if kitniyot aren't an issue and you don't subscribe to ashkenaz vs sephardic, you have:

Folia Grill: pork gyros is not your typical gyros...its ridiculously amazing

1 street south, you can find street parking (usually).
be prepared to drive halfway down the street. ends up being a 2 minute walk. otherwise, you can park on Pape (metered) during non-rush hour times
