February 2011 Cookbook of the Month: THE ESSENTIAL NEW YORK TIMES COOKBOOK Chapters 1-4

ROASTED FETA WITH THYME HONEY p.92
Very easy and good. I added the roasted feta to a lentil salad and it worked very well. On another occasion I served it with olives, pita bread, and tzatziki as a starter.

February 2011 Cookbook of the Month: THE ESSENTIAL NEW YORK TIMES COOKBOOK Chapters 1-4

HOT BUTTERED RUM p.24

This is an easy and conforting drink perfect for winter. We were snowed in two weeks ago and this drink saved my sanity! I have made it several times since.
It has cinammon, nutmeg, cloves and rum. The strange part is adding a tiny amount of butter at the end.

I also think it was good but like my avocado even more Mexican style with onion, tomato, lime juice, coarse sea salt and pepper.

Best Cookbooks for Cooking with and For Kids

Hi Westy! I love EAT UP from Mark Hix. Got it as a gift when I was living in the UK. Not sure if it sells in the US. Wonderful book with recipes for babies, toddlers and older kids that are great for adults too!

February 2011 Cookbook of the Month WINNER

I also love JO LulusMom! But I almost didn't buy Cook With Jamie because the cover looks so silly. So glad I did. The reicpes are amazing (and easy)! I am looking forward to cooking from the NYTCB in Feb. and hope to see a JO book of the month soon.

Your favorite Le Creuset color

I have assorted LC in red, cobalt and dune. I love them all and wish I could justify getting some more pieces in the new WS ocean or Dijon. From the ones I have my least favorite would be dune, but it was the one one sale!

What's your favorite snowed-in comfort food?

When snowed-in nothing better than a braised chuck roast with veggies, a nice bottle of red wine and a home-baked cake.

Really happy about cooking and posting about the NYTEC in February. The nominations thread inspired me to order KITCHEN DIARIES and I am eagerly waiting for it!

Should I add these three to my overflowing bookcase? AAArrrrgghh!

I have the NYT Cookbook and since it arrived a couple of weeks ago I have been cooking from it. It has amazing recipes going back to the 1850's and the background stories and tips from Amanda Hesser, make this book, for me at least, a must have.

THE ESSENTIAL NEW YORK TIMES by Amanda Hesser is my new favorite cookbook!

I just got my copy from Amazon last week and so far everything I cooked from it turned out great.
Amanda Hesser did a great job compiling the best recipes published in the NYT since the 1850's and the historical background and witty prose makes this book a pleasure to read and to cook from.
The moussaka was a favorite with my family. p.518
The chocolate Dump-it-cake is easy to make and delicious. p.781
The Roasted Feta with Thyme Honey simple and very tasty. p.92
The Roast Lemon Chicken was excellent hot and the next day for sandwiches. p.478
What are your favorite recipes in this book? Or recipes included that you knew already?

Cookbooks you shouldn't have purchased...which books just didn't work for you?

Thanks cosmogrrl! I will try some of the recipes you mentioned. The almond cake does sound tempting...

Cookbooks you shouldn't have purchased...which books just didn't work for you?

Just got a copy of Fast Food My Way (Jacques Pepin). I have not been inspired to cook from it. Has anyone experience cooking from this book and are there any great recipes in it?

Around My French Table

Hi, I am new to chow. I have made Marie Hellene's cake several times now and it was always delicious. Yesterday I was out of rum so used cognac instead. It was also very good. Lovely cognac flavor with every bite of moist apple cake. I love this book!
Another favorite is the quiche with Gorgonzola and apples. Very easy and delicious cold as an afternoon snack (ideally with wine).
