Han Dynasty in E.V.

Haven't been to this one yet, but i have been to the original philly one a lot. Its very tasty, i doubt its anything close to what you get in china, but such is life. If you stick to the traditional offerings you will get traditional food, just avoid the lame americanized dishes.

Thoughts on itinerary? 30s Couple from Alabama on 1st trip

A couple comments.

1) listen to everything kathyrn says

2) To me celeste is an excellent neighborhood Italian joint, but im not sure its destination worthy. That being said, for the relatively cheap price its hard to beat.

3) skip Yonah schimmel's on the les food tour because that place is a disgrace

We're Number 4!!!!

This entire list is a travesty. All it proves is that more people from chicago take online T&L polls and that their writers are lazy.

Dumpling question

I asked the same question on these boards about 1 year ago. Ill give you the answer I got. Check out this thread:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/700045

It pretty much recommends one place, which is dim sum garden. I have never bought frozen stuff from them, but their food is pretty good.

Edit: WOW IM AN IDIOT. You posted that other thread. I dont think anything has changes since then.

Nice restaurant for 6 people

Osteria is very good for sharing. The only reason Im not considering it is that Ive been there before. I wanted to try somewhere new.

Thanks.

Nice restaurant for 6 people

Im looking for a restaurant that works for a large family that likes to share dishes. Places that have worked well in the past include: Zahav, Barbuzzo, Tinto, Amada, and Han dynasty.

The restaurant must either by BYO or have a decent white wine list. Price can be variable as evident by my examples.

I was thinking maybe Amis? How does it compare to other Vetri places? Any other suggestions?

Philly versus NYC

Wait...I did answer OPs question in my first post. Now Im confused.

Also I love Zabar's, but you were arguing that point with someone else.

Philly versus NYC

I didnt mean to imply that New York didnt have good versions of those foods. Since Philly does have good versions though it would be unnecessary to try them in NY.

And to be completely honest, there are very few foods that Philly does completely objectively better then New York.

Roast Pork, Cheesesteaks, bahn mi, and fudge from franklin fountain might be the only things I can think of :)

Philly versus NYC

There are already a lot of responses, but as a long time New Yorker living in Philadelphia I will contribute my thoughts

Things Philadelphia does well that can be avoided in New York:
Vietnamese food
Tacos / mexican
Italian
Hoagies / Subs
Gastropub / Beer

Things Philadelphia does poorly that should be eaten in New York:
Sushi / Ramen / Japanese anything - although philly's ramen scene is developing
Thai
Chinese of any kind that isnt szechuan
Pizza
Bagels
High end French or anything really

Spring Staycation

Im looking for cheap eats, because I already have plans for my night time fancy dinners. No budget restrictions.

I used to live around st. marks, so ive done most of that neighborhood. Ive done the RGR and the chinatown tours, but not your west village one, so Ill definitely try that. Are there any other chowhound published neighborhood crawls you know of?

Ive actually never checked realcheapeats.com Thanks for the suggestion.

Spring Staycation

Im a long time New Yorker trying to plan a 4 day staycation food-a-thon in the spring. Im trying to pick as many snack / sandwich / pastry / bagel / pizza / casual anything places that I can spend my days traveling around to.

However, Ive already been to so many of the traditional New York food tourist places (katz, R&D, Barney Greengrass, Di Fara, ippudo etc etc). Im looking for destination worthy casual food options that are less frequently discussed. If the place has ever been mentioned in one of the classic "where to eat when visiting NY" threads, Ive probably already been to it.

Amazing XLB

Its been awhile since I went, so I will definitely give Red Kings another shot. Now Im hungry, perhaps ill get XLB for dinner.

Amazing XLB

I went to Red Kings maybe 1-2 years ago (I think) around the time they first opened. While the flavor of their XLB was good I thought the skins were a little thick and gummy. They also stuck together and were structurally unsound. Personally I prefer the XLB at Dim Sum Garden. Ive never been to Sakura Mandarin, but no places in philly compare to the best of Flushing or even manhattan chinatown..

Cake Pop

Personally I think cake pops are silly, but my mom loves the ones sold at Starbucks. I thought I would buy her a couple good ones as a gift. I found a few New York places online and was curious if anyone has tried them. Any other suggestions are welcome as well.

15 East @ table or Starve

Thanks for the reply. I actually already tried calling Ushiwakamaru and was unable to get a sushi bar spot. Ive eaten at both Yasuda and Kanoyama already, so I didnt want to repeat those experiences. Perhaps Ill call Sushi Azabu tomorrow to see if I can get a spot at the bar.

15 East @ table or Starve

Right now I unfortunately dont get to New York very frequently and I foolishly didnt make my 15 East dinner reservations far enough in advance. I was unable to get a sushi bar spot this weekend, but I do have a table reservation. I know the sushi bar is ideal for the best experience, but is a table seat worth the price? I dont want to waste my money and get a subpar experience, but Im also not sure when I would realistically be able to come back and sit at the sushi bar.

Any thoughts?

Good bakery in New York?

I agree that the chocolate blackout cake doughnut at Doughnut Plant is probably the star, but Ive always enjoyed the Creme Brulee yeast doughnut as well.

Dough in Brooklyn is my standard for perfection when it comes to yeast doughnuts. Its not terribly convenient to get to, but its worth the trip.

Crabs... with a dog

Thanks. Chris' seafood sounds like a great idea. I couldnt find a website, so I just wanted to confirm that I found the correct place. Is the address 801 S. Monteford Ave? I found a menu online that listed a bunch of non seafood options. Is any of that stuff good? Is there anywhere else in the area you would recommend for good non-seafood take out.

Ive never been to Baltimore so I dont know what its like. Do you think we would get in trouble for drinking beers in Patterson Park with our crab? Cold beer and crab go so wonderfully together.

Crabs... with a dog

Hey All,

I feel bad creating yet another crab thread on your boards, but I searched and searched and couldnt find a thread that quite matched my specifications.

Im driving from philly with friends to the baltimore area in search of proper maryland crabs, but I have a few inconvenient requirements.

1) We will have a dog with us, so the place either needs outdoor dinning that would allow a dog or needs to be a take out place with some nice outdoor seating we could use close by

2) There has to be at least some non seafood options, because one member of the party is lame and doesnt eat any seafood.

3) The place has to be great enough to justify our 2 hour drive from philly.

4) We were intending to drive to Baltimore, but recommendations elsewhere are totally acceptable if the extra quality is worth the extra driving.

Thank you very much

Frozen Dumplings?

Frozen Dumplings?

Are there any places to buy packs of good frozen dumplings in Chinatown? In NY you can buy these 50 packs from any of the cheap-o dumpling places. Do these exist in philly?

Thanks

Guide to the New World Mall Food Court

Thanks. I ended up going Saturday afternoon instead of Friday Night, so it didnt matter. Fighting for a seat didnt prove to be as hard as I thought it would be either. It was a delicious adventure.
