A&S Pork Store on 5th between 86th and 87th. The nicest people, everything is always fresh and delicious and the prices are right on.

Something I noticed last night was that neither Marcel or Dale chose Carla for their teams. As discussed last week, is this because the other chefs don't really see her as competition and see her as more of the underdog?

here is mine:
U-Bet chocolate syrup (for making egg creams)
lemon juice in the green bottle
frozen swanson and banquet meals
neopolitan ice cream
Steak Ummmms
shrimp cocktail that came in these pretty little parfait glasses, we had a whole juice glass collection of those
crunchy Chinese noodles
mixes for soup, including one for egg drop soup that was REALLY bad
cup of soup in every flavor
funny old spices, some mentioned here already, but I remember one that was vegetable flakes, like onion flakes, but with other dried veggies in there
canned succotash
iced tea mix
powdered milk (just in case of emergency) (we lived in NYC, never had a milk emergency)
matzoh balls in a jar
gefilte fish in a jar

things I always have that mom NEVER did:
olive oil
real butter
fresh garlic
good Parmesan cheese

Is Bourdain's baby girl a culinary savant?

Since I can remember, I have eaten pickled herring in cream sauce with onions, all kinds of smoked fish, olives, sardines, you name it. Have to start them young before everything is "ewwwwwwwww" when you try and serve it to them.

Quick Cilantro Tasting Question - what percentage taste soap?

Does anyone get the soap taste from foods other than cilantro? I have tried mango many, many times and no matter what, it tastes like soap to me.

best soft drink ever

In the mid 80's, when Snapple products were first showing up in Brooklyn, they made some flavors of soda. There were a couple I really liked, but my favorite was Snapple Cherry Lime Rickey soda. Delicious!

When I was a kid in the 70's we had Jack in the Box here in Brooklyn NY, but I don't think they are up here anymore at all.
And what ever happened to Roy Rogers? Do they exist anywhere?

I just re-read the post and the waiter who posted this was told that they were allowing it because they could 'not' accomodate a Kosher meal for her.

I just finished reading a thread on a board that is geared more towards being a place for food industry people to rant, but it seems there are just plain old eating folks too. The thread that I just finished was basically this. A waiter was complaining about a party of 6 that he had in his restaurant. 5 of the 6 ladies ordered food and drink, but the 6th lady was a religious Jewish woman who kept strict Kosher. Therefore, she could not eat anything in that restaurant and so she brought her meal with her in a bag from home, along with a plate and whatever else she needed. For some reason, this upset almost everyone on this board, for various reasons. The reasons ranged from a basic 'you don't bring outside food into a restaurant', to 'how dare these people push their religious beliefs in my face' to 'how does this affect the tip you should be getting' and even including 'she should have just sat there and drank water if she could not eat'. I must admit I was a little blown away by these reactions!! One of my first thoughts was 'I wonder how the Chowhounds would react to this?' so here is my first shot at starting a thread; I am curious as to how others will react.

on the SE corner of 86th and 4th is a great Greek place...Plaka Taverna...something like that...delicious

"Melty" Cheese

Last time I ate Arby's was with my younger nephew, who is 18. We were in the drive thru and he was driving. I ordered a roast beef and told my nephew to be sure and ask for Horsey Sauce. He looked at me like I had grown another head! I said, that is what it is called, I am not kidding you. He said, Aunt Dori, if I ask for Horsey Sauce, they are really going to know what I am asking for? I promised him they would, and they did and he tasted the sauce later and like it too.

Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)

does anyone else get the "soap" taste from mango?
whenever I read people saying they taste soap when they eat cilantro, I wonder if anyone else but me gets that from mango.
Other than mango, baby corn tastes just like dirt, I can't deal with the taste or texture of avocado, and bread and butter pickles go against everything a pickle should taste like.

Chopped egg in tuna salad?? Is that strange?

Growing up, tuna meant tuna with mayo and nothing else. We are from NYC. In more recent years, my mom has started putting 1 hard boiled egg in with a large can of tuna and the mayo. We love it that way now. I agree with others though that I have never seen it prepare this way in a restaurant or deli.

Are there any hounds in Bay Ridge?

been living in Bay Ridge for awhile and these are some places with good food in my opinion:
For Italian - For takeout DEFINITELY Vesuvio. The best white clam sauce in the 'hood. I also frequent a little known place on 4th and 88th called Pietro's Tratoria. Delicious.
For burgers, wings, (bar food) - Kettle Black. Have never had anything bad from there and their onion rings are amazing.
For Chinese - I am always a little disappointed with the Chinese, but I suppose my favorite would be the one on 3rd between 85th and 86th, east side of the street.
For Mexican - Mezcal's on 3rd off of 75th. There is no other good Mex in Bay Ridge.
Also good is Circle's on 3rd and about 90th.

What foods do you HAVE to mail order?

I live in brooklyn and can get those Maniscewitz soups in the tubes if you want them. My mom made those while I was growing up and I remember they were pretty good.
