HELP for San Antonio High Quality Dining
How about Silo? Haven't been there ... heard tell they had decent food ... but is it up to hoity toity standards?
As to steak, I thought I mentioned Grey Moss Inn ... darned good aged beef when I was last there. And they had a great wine list at that time ... but it's been a while. Don't know how it's doing these days.
I had a friend who raved about The Fig Tree ... and then I treated one of their chefs who thought their prices were obscene. But is the food all that?
Too bad Castle Avalon no longer opens it's dining room to outsiders ... I had the best lamb chops in my life up there a handful of years ago. They have a lovely, intimate dining room.
Restaurants/BBQ near Houston Galleria - advice needed
For an authentic Bagel place & a good eggs, lox & onions breakfast, I'd recommend
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=3790351611091442852&q=Bagels+Houston&gl=us&cd=3&cad=src:pplink,view:text&ei=tbNOS5zKDZOYzASI3rjKCw
Not some chain franchise ... this is the real thing in Houston. (Not as good as Canter's in LA, but what outside of NYC is? For those who haven't been there: www.cantersdeli.com )
Restaurants/BBQ near Houston Galleria - advice needed
James,
As I recall from an earlier CH post ... the "Luling City Market" in Houston has NO RELATION to the Actual BBQ in Luling, TX ... they have appropriated the name in an attempt to benefit from the reputation of the separate Luling business. Their website effectively says so: "Luling City Market was founded in 1981 in Houston Texas in an attempt to bring the distinct Central Texas barbeque style to the city. "
Folks who have been to both have been very disappointed by the Houston copycats. And ... FWIW ... I have friends in Luling who don't even go to the actual market in Luling ... they drive to Lockhart. So ... the Houston "Luling" City Market is a bad copy of 2nd rate BBQ. And, frankly, I don't like the low ethics of trying to profit on the good reputation of another business. Before I knew better, I let a friend drag me there & ... frankly ... Bill Miller's was better ... and that's the worst BBQ insult I have.
But, as I've said before, there is a lot of disagreement over good BBQ in TX. And if the Houston copycats taste good to you ... then go for it (& take your prilosec).
Rather than get bad BBQ, I'd rather go to Fadi's ... but that's not BBQ at all.
8383 Westheimer #112 @ Dunvale (W of Galleria) 713-532-0666 www.fadiscuisine.com
At very least, try their Zataar Pita ... after having it there, I've figured out how to get my Zataar fix at home. I can't say it's in walking distance ... pull up mapquest.
For the closest "dive" I'd recommend Bubba's Texas Burger Shack 713-661-1622
5230 Westpark (@IH-59 S @ Westpark Curve on Northbound Feeder)
M-Sa 11-22, Su 0930-20 (when I was last there)
Somebody else's review stated:
"Every product sold represents some culinary road less traveled. There are buffalo burgers, Zapp's potato chips & hard-to-find Trappey's Chef-Magic jalapeño hot sauce. There's good ole Shiner Bock. Then there's Jones Sodas. There are Bubba's employees. "One time when I was eating at Bubba's, the guy who was working there pulled out a guitar, sat down at our table & started singing Willie Nelson songs." Too bad Corvette no longer works/hangs out there :-)
It's your call ... you'd have to taxi there. But I only get my Bison patties there ... can't find better in TX (yet). www.myspace.com/bubbastexasburgershack

There is SO MUCH excellent food in Houston, to limit yourself to "BBQ" ... and bad BBQ at that, would be a travesty. There's a big asian community down in the Bellaire Blvd/Loop 8 area ... and just E of the George R Brown Convention Center, There a marvelous Sicilian place just W of the Med Center on Bellaire/Holcombe. Then there's KL House just W of Sharpstown Mall on Bellaire (I think) ... KL = Kuala Lumpur
http://houston.citysearch.com/profile/46250134/houston_tx/kuala_lumpur.html
When's the last time you had down home Kuala Lumpur food like momma used to make?
Name an ethnicity of food (except Russian!) and Houston can probably accommodate you (needless to say, I haven't had great luck w/ Russian restaurants but haven't tried 'em all either)
Hope you find some great food (wherever you decide to go) & enjoy your visit.

Thanks re: Dough ... it's in my PDA now. Surprised to see their lunchtime prices are greater than dinner prices for some items. First time I've run into that.
Can't say I know Neopolitan pizza ... during my time in Italy the pizzas were all thin crust w/ a little marinara decoration ... nothing more ... only antipasti.
Nice to see they have Pineto Brachetto D' Acqui - Piemonte to have w/ desserts.
And for folks who like a sweet bubbly, the Rosa Regale would also be good with desserts .... and probably a good contrast w/ speecy spicey foods.
On another topic ... I'm building an Adobe Oven for my new property ... maybe seeing theirs will help in my design :-) Heck ... 90 sec cooking time is faster & better than a microwave :-)
Thanks again for the suggestion, I'd forgotten about Dough.

Good suggestion! I haven't been there in years, but it was always excellent.
SAEyeDoc ... am sure you are right that no reservations are needed @ Il Sogno ... I'm waiting til the newness wears off & it doesn't have the line at the door (that I've heard about) when it opens. And right now I don't have anyone I'd want to take there for dinner anyway.
2010 Roadtrip
Agree w/ great BBQ in Central TX & Hill Country
Austin great for local beers ... San Antonio only has 2 operating small breweries (Blue Star & Freetail) ... but Bandera has the Real Ale Brewery
But nobody has mentioned the Texas Wineries ... pick up some good BBQ in Lockhart & then head W to the Wineries & picnic w/ the BBQ w/ a bottle of wine or 2. Some of the wineries have a B&B.
see: www.texaswinetrail.com/print_map.html
And 4 times a year they have a "wine tour" w/ specials at the wineries ...

Cooking Classes in Houston Texas?
www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/ they list cooking classes ... just find the store nearest you & see if they have any.
I was also gonna recommend Central Market, but I got beat to the punch.
I'm also sure that Spec's has had classes ... or had notices of classes ... not seeing notices on their site at this time but checking w/ the Smith Street Spec's is an option
www.specsonline.com
Then there's also Leisure Learning Unlimited ... just find their printed pamphlet to see what classes are current ... or check out their website: www.llu.com
And then you could google: houston cooking classes ... and find a shitload more

Well ... if SAEyeDoc says so ... you can take it as God's Truth ... he may not be able to keep Lackland AFB separated from Randolph AFB ... but he knows good grunts. And the locals pee in their pants with excitement if they can get a reservation at Il Sogno or Sandbar.
I'm a plebe ... and I kinda like Grey Moss Inn ... for their wine list & summer patio dining w/ a good aged cow. And aside from my date, their aged beef is darned good as well.
And now that I've done my best to offend everyone, I'll bow out. :-)

So you like Blue Cheese Salad, eh?
Try this: (someone brought it to work)
Bleu Ranch Dressing
Equal parts Mayo & Ranch Dressing
Crumble up LOTS of bleu cheese in it ... then double that!
Finely dice some celery into it.
GREAT as a dip, marvelous to dip celery into ... no doubt would be great on buffalo wings.
Cheap Good Eats Near Lackland AFB?
El Rafas Cafe 733-5476 1535 W Hildebrand Av (btwn Blanco & IH-10) (comments below gleaned off Chowhound & other sites) ... for myself ... I think El Rafas puts out some darned good food.
Breakfast menu is extensive. Plates from $3.25 -4.25, & vy generously sized. They offer huevos a la Mexicana, huevos rancheros, chicharrones con huevo, bacon & egg, ham & egg, chorizo con huevo, huevos a la Mexicana, papas a la Mexicana [that means w/sauce of green pepper, tomatoes, & onions], country sausage & egg, chilaquiles, machacado, & papas rancheras (w/salsa ranchera). Taco options incl carne guisada, machacado, barbacoa, lengua, picadillo, carne asada, carne a la Mexicana, fajitas, & chicharrones con huevo for $1.70 ea. Egg+something & bean+something tacos are $1.25 ea.
Standout dishes
Huevos rancheros. The over-more-or-less-easy eggs were enlivened by vy good ranchera salsa made w/sweet fresh tomatoes along w/onions, garlic, oregano, etc. It had good spicy after-kick to it from judicious use of serrano chiles.
Chunky ranchera salsa tasted good on everything.
3 kinds of bkfst potatoes: The ones that came w/huevos rancheros are like short, thick, greasy french fries. They were kind of soggy, but had great flavor. The potatoes w/papas rancheras are tasty fried chunks of potatoes w/ranchera salsa. Their smooth refried beans are excellent — made w/lard.
Their lengua taco has long strips of tongue stewed w/chiles. The meat is vy good, & tender. Despite chiles, the dish wasn’t spicy, but was enjoyable.
Their corn tortillas are better than flour ones - made from fresh masa. The tortillas need a little salt.
Carne guisada is tender but seasoned w/not much besides tomatoes — just so-so.
Barbacoa was crispy, from being cooked on the grill like hash or bacon. Fine, not superlative.
Flan, which they buy from baker down the street. It was perfectly acceptable.
1 critic) Many items are underseasoned—no salt, no lard, not enough spice. The menudo, for example, contained good-quality, tasty, tender tripe, but it needed more chili powder & oregano. The Mexican rice is neither too dry nor too moist, but pretty bland. It needed the addition of extra salsa ranchera we requested to make it flavorful.

San Antonio - Best...
1) Tom's Ribs was excellent ... it's also closed.
2) Rudy's BBQ is a travesty compared to the BBQ you can get in Lockhart ... UNLESS your idea of BBQ is goop that hides the flavor of mediocre meat. But good BBQ is also a big debate in TX ... LOTS written on Chowhound on the best BBQ places. As the great philosopher once said ... everyone has a nether orifice & an opinion, and not everyone will appreciate yours (or mine). So, for the best BBQ, you'll just have to read what's posted & see if you can find a consensus. But 50 miles is a good radius to find several places.
3) Plenty of TexMex here ... most of mediocre quality ... a few excellent ... also a lot posted on that.
4) Very few authentic Mexican-Mexican here ... they've mainly been Americanized OR Texanized. I'm fond of El Siete Mares for Mx Seafood ... but also plenty posted & some good suggestions in this thread
Chris Madrid's is good for big sloppy greasy type of hamburger ... pretty authentic local ambiance. A line forms before they open & it's full within 30 min at lunch time. But it IS just a hamburger.
For ethnic lunch ... I'd recommend Los Antojitos (330 Culebra ... just to the W of downtown) ... tiny parking lot ... go early ... crowded at lunch. HRS M-Sa 07-15 Cash Only. But it IS a Mom operation ... most of the larger Mex restaurants listed in this thread will have larger menus & have a fancier ambiance.
Luling City Market for BBQ ... is in Luling ... not Lockhart BUT I have friends in Luling who drive to Lockhart for BBQ ... if that says anything to you.
The biggest advantage of Mi Tierra is that it's open 24/7. Otherwise, it doesn't blow my socks off ... OTOH ... if it's close, it might be convenient.
In that area of town I kinda prefer their sister restaurant a hundred yards away, La Margarita ... for the cabrito and for the ambiance.
Have a nice visit.
Headed to Waco for 3 months
There's at least 1 other thread on Waco ... maybe more
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/561402
I've met friends @ Buzzard Billy's ... and was not displeased.
Also tried the ClayPot (VietNamese) ... www.claypotcuisine.com ... it was also decent food if not fancy. (Nothing like Mai Que in Houston ... VietNamese/French royal family level of cooking ... too bad they moved to Florida!)
Louis Mueller's IS good BBQ ... more pepper than most BBQs in Central Tx. The Taylor Cafe also has decent Q but it's not on the top of my list of best BBQs.
Head N of Waco to Greater Metropolitan West, Tx & try the Czech Stop for pastries ... there's also a Czech butcher next door for your sausage needs ... both right off the freeway. IF you go E about 1-2 mi into West TX, (across the RR tracks) there's another, better bakery on the Lt (N) side of the street. Great Poppy Seed Kolaches.
Try hitting the Tx Wine Trail (google it) ... take some good BBQ & cheese w/ you ... picnic w/ a bottle of wine @ each place
Where can I get Schweppes Bitter Lemon?
If you think Bitter Lemon is hard to find ... try finding Schweppe's Bitter Orange! GREAT stuff but I haven't seen it since the early 70's in Modesto, CA. It makes a great mixer BUT is also very refreshing straight. From my searches, it seems only the Germans appreciate it!

Someone else's previous recommendation:
Where to Sit: A cove elevated above the courtyard provides a romantic view of the peaceful surroundings.
The tamarind iced tea is sweet and refreshing.
Best Instant Coffee
Based on some of the comments, I figured I'd get some instant coffee for when I'm in a rush, or for cooking ... and got the 3 most recommended brands.
All 3, Nescafe Clasico, Taster's Choice, and Medaglia d'Oro Espresso were all quite good & very rich. However, for me the Taster's Choice Gourmet Blend fell just short of the standard set by the other 2. But the Nescafe Clasico was a toss up w/ the Medaglia d'Oro ... and if you had to choose on price, then the Nescafe isn't quite as pricey. If you had to choose size of bottle ... well ... the Medaglia d'Oro only comes in a teensy bottle (here ... maybe you can do better), so I'd have to run to the store more often. But, if you are off camping & want a small bottle of very good coffee that packs tightly, then it would be the better choice.
Of course, these are so close in quality, I can easily see why folks fall on different sides of the fence. That's why I've tried 'em side by side.
So, just cuz it comes in a monster jar, at a moderate price AND is locally available, I'm leaning towards the Nescafe Clasico ... at least after the others are used up.
Oh yeah ... the Taster's Choice doesn't dissolve quite as well as the others either ... it takes more stirring. You decide if that's good or bad.
Schweppes Bitter Lemon
Yeah ... how could such a refreshing drink NOT be readily available? Even better was their bitter orange (but rarer)!
I've learned to pulp Osage Oranges into plain Tonic water & make do! And I recommend that as a pretty decent work around. Purists would want to strain the pulp ... but I don't mind chewing my Gin & Tonics ;-)
Banh Mi in San Antonio?
Not sure I can be of any help. I've been to Pho SA several times ... for the pho ... never had, or noticed if they offer banh mi.
Never having been to RVN, I looked up banh mi & it seems to be suspiciously like what is served at "French Sandwiches" at 8448 Fredericksburg Rd @ SE corner of Wurzbach (behind KFC). 692-7019, FAX 692-7723 (they deliver). M-F 0930-1730 / Sa -16
What I read about them on Chowhound was "sandwiches are excellent and very cheap less than $6.00. You get a cream puff & choice of onion soup or salad w/ the sandwich"
... but I personally found their sandwiches to be overly salty.
My notes: "Turkey Club on Hot Bread $5.50 w/iced tea, cream puff & soup
(sandwich good but a bit salty)
French Onion soup is fine, Soup du Jour M,Tu & F = Shrimp, W&Th = Chicken Corn"
So ... I can't highly recommend French Sandwiches ... but if you lean towards the salty side, it might be perfect for you. I'd be pleased to learn if you find it better than I did (I'm willing to give 'em a 2nd chance) ... or I'd be glad to learn of better.

Texas Bar-BQ Joints Map Project
Since I think we all are aware of some stinkers in this entire list of BBQ places ... is there any way you can allow folks to vote on different place names & locations? That way folks could evaluate a place w/ 1 vote for ... vs places w/ 250 votes for 'em as being relatively different. Just a phone book listing of all the BBQ places in TX, by definition, has to have lots of crappy places mixed w/ the good places. A vote is the only way I can suggest to give the places on your map a comparative rating. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.
Ed
Texas Bar-BQ Joints Map Project
Well ... can't say I believe in some of the places folks have listed ... but to each his/her own.
I'd like to add my favorite BBQ inside San Antonio ... marvelous by itself, and if you get it w/ his jerked sauce, it gets downright perky. I like the sauce on the side so I can control the heat.
