Cutting boards

Pretty much because I bought a bamboo one and I have the cutting sheets (the ones that come in different colors) Guess I'll keep it a bit longer. Funny thing I used it today and kinda missed it.

Have you bought a new dishwasher in the last 2 years?

I have purchased a Bosch to replace a 30+ yr old dishwasher. I got it during our rebate season and it was originally about $600+ but after the rebate $100 plus delivery. I LOVE it! I initially said I'd use it once a month because we were never allowed to use the dishwasher much and it felt odd to me but I use it literally every day or every other day. It's a great dishwasher

Cutting boards

How long is too long to keep a plastic cutting board? I have one that's about 10 yrs old and has food stains. I no longer use it but for some reason never tossed it. Am I overreacting?

Do you use them? I tried to use mine years ago (20+) and the clean up was horrendous. Never touched them again.

Oh goodness I got rid of that set immediately. I'm not holding hi end knives but I have pretty decent pieces by Calphalon, Anolon all stainless sets full tang. Anlso have a few Anolon Brunello pieces BEAUTIFUL wood grain in that collection.

I've had the OXO for about 13 yrs and its still as good as ever. I wish I NEVER looked at faberware's "never rust" knife set. Never rust must've meant rust the very first time it touches water. Didn't cut well either.

Why no cast iron on cooking shows?

Yup. Every generation in my family has cast iron on their stove that has been passed down from someone else. I grew up with stainless steel, enameled cast iron and plain cast iron skillets, kettles, corn bread molds, etc and thought EVERYONE did. Was never tempted by nonstick until the past year but I will never get rid of my little cast iron collection. I think I've seen it use in Paula Deens show a few times

Love that line!

I think I may have something even older than that cauldron and egg beater. My grandma passed away in 2010 and I inherited her sugar bowl and matching creamer which were wedding gifts. I wouldn't say they are crystal but I know they are glass and very pretty. So they were married somewhere around 1929 but no later than 1931, which would make it around 80ish. I wish I had something passed from their parents to them but there are just too many of us and you pretty much take what you can get. It's still a great piece of my history!

What's The Oldest Thing You Cook In/With?

"Tallow pot" is a term ive heard my grandma use maybe thats what it is? It is used from time to time but only for family functions ( we have a huge family) it stays in NC on the Outerbanks in that same spot my grandfather stationed it. The problem is its heavy as all get out and i doubt I will ever move it up North where I am since im in a city with limited space. It also takes 3-4 people to help clean it - hence being used from time to time. I will take a picture of it the next time I'm in town which is fairly often. There was a smaller cauldron (1 person capacity) that was lent to a passerby who asked to use it for a family gathering and promised to return it. Grandma gave it to him and never saw it again. (they did things like that back in those days but people would return things as promised!) granddaddy was NOT amused! LOL

What's The Oldest Thing You Cook In/With?

I have my grandmothers hand rotary beater. I believe it's over 70 yrs old as my Mom said it was there before she was born. Also I do have a cast iron cauldron! Also inherited from my grandmother. It's one of a set and my Mom has the other one. She made everything from soap to gumbo in that thing. Even boiled clothes in it at one time before they got their first washer. It's been there as long as the beater And big enough to fit two adult bodies in. Ask me how I know...LOL

Indigo LC @ Sur La Table in Signature line

I looked at the link - that indigo looks like the faded color of the newer LC line. I prefer the solid color of the old line. A bit disappointing but oh well.

Indigo LC @ Sur La Table in Signature line

I have the Indigo and was pretty bummed it never made it to the main stores here in MA. It's a beautiful deep dark blue that reflects its color under light. I think I purchased mine in 2000 or 2001 from the LC outlet.

I'm the opposite. I just started dabbling in nonstick cookware over the past year. I have Calphalon Contemporary double burner griddle, square grill and griddle as well as two skillets. I love them but it's most likely as far as I will go. While i can definitely see the ease of use with nonstick i do worry about what type of chemical is involved in the nonstick coating. I grew up and was taught to cook with cast iron and stainless cookware and bakeware like Pyrex and corningware - I don't see myself giving any of that up anytime soon.

Would you say a molcajete always gives superior results than a normal mortar and pestle?

I had to go and check mine as I bought it thinking it was the traditional rough textured one and come to find out it's not. SMH lol I may have acquired a thai mortar and pestle without realizing it. I do know that i didn't care for the rough texture and worried about food getting caught in the crevices. thanks for the link!

Thanks!

I was going to return it because I wasn't too sure about the quality of them vs the d5 line. turns out that I like them alot betterThey will definitely get used!Ii am in the process of upgrading some older cookware pieces and drool over some of the AC line. I don't need a 20 piece set of anything as I'm not that dedicated to one line. Every time I find the new piece that I want and it meets my approval, the older piece gets donated. I follow reviews closely to get a feel of what I may encounter. Per WS's reviews the d5 isn't doing as well as they expected.

Help me pick good/affordable knife set: Calphalon Comtemporary set vs. Wusthof Classic 9 piece block

This is what I have and I love them. Bought them a few years ago and they were affordable. Apparently they are pretty sought after and some sellers are now asking for $400+ for these sets. That's CRAZY. They are beautiful pieces of cutlery IMO.

http://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Conte...

I also have the steak knives, a chef knife, santoku, and carving set from this line. Been kicking myself that I didn't buy the whole set because it is GORGEOUS!

http://www.amazon.com/Anolon-Brunello...

Most of this stuff is hard to find now but not impossible. I can't comment on a Wusthof as I've never been crazy about them and haven't given them a fair shot.

iSi Mini Easy Whip question

I have the mini whip that I purchased from the WS outlet for about $35 and the Gourmet whip on EBAY for $71 - just purchased both of them les than a month ago. Yes you can use vanilla syrup, confectioners sugars, honey, chocolate flavoring, etc in the whippers. They are awesome tools to have.

What color chargers are most versatile?

I have silver, gold, red, green, purple, and cognac (those are leather). For a general charger - I'd go with silver.

Are you a Label snob when it comes to cookware??

Not really. I like high end but I will shop around for the best deal. I have no problem buying seconds from Le Creuset or All Clad, or buying the great looking bakeware from Walmart. It's about looks and function for me.

What was the one knife or knifes you regret buying?

A Farberware "never rust" set when I got my first apartment. OMG it was awful! rusted right after I washed it the very first time! Never again

Anyone know a good place for a knife skills class? Lower westchester pref.

William-Sonoma stores hold classes every Saturday this month.

Where to buy inexpensive whole vanilla beans?

Thanks for this! I've gone on both sites and want to order beans today. I was previously eyeing a different site but see that I can make out cheaper going through one of these vendors.

Le Creuset Outlet in Wrentham Premium Outlets (around Boston MA) - good prices/selection?

I have purchased from WPO's Le Creuset and WS Outlet stores. I was there about 3 months ago. I will say that tey still have lower prices than going to lets say a WS retail store BUT you can also find better deals from places like TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods. The best deal will be on the items that are seconds (which is what's sold at the stores mentioned). Most of the time the "imperfection" is so slight you'd never find it. I've purchased my items from the LC outlet years ago - they had a seconds area in the back of the store and they also had many many many different colors that never hit the regular stores. Because you are just starting out and new to cooking, I wouldn't try to get a full line of ever single piece of cookware offered. Get your basics first and then move up from there. JCP use to also offer a nice little set of like 3 or 4 pieces or about $150-$200.
