good kippers, and other smoked fishy things

Not in the city but out in the townships. I haven't had the chance to check it out but seem to have fans from this thread.

Was at a friend's place yesterday when he lost power because Romados was on fire.

Best grocery store rotisserie chicken

Yes, I think the Latin American place.... are they still there?
If it's closed.. sorry... it's one of those memory things when you think... "Hey, I should try one of those chickens"... then you still go to the area and never really notice if it's gone until you think about it.

Best grocery store rotisserie chicken

Maison du roti on Mt. Royal (between papineau and de lorimier) has some good birds, smallish, for under 10$ although I think they are more classified as roasted than rotisserie... (I don't see any turning ;))
there's also that place in Little Italy not far from Milano's... I haven't tried but they look good from the window....

What local beer available in Montreal supermarkets is worth buying?

Like others, I would recommend going to a specialty place like Depanneur Peluso (2500, rue Rachel E, Montreal, QC H2H 1S1). The owner is super knowledgeable and can walk you through the couple dozen types of blanches (all from Quebec) he has on hand plus there's a couple hundred types of Quebec beers in house.

Montreal to join rest of world and allow street food soon?

I really don't get this obsessive fascination with the food truck trend. If it's really that great why do 90% of food carts and trucks in NY suck and pretty much serve the same crap. I really don't think it'll improve and make for better food choices in the city... just more of the same. And we live in Montreal... not NY or Vancouver... our outdoor eating season is pretty damn short.
Maybe the city can delegate an area where several food trucks can congregate and maybe supply picnic tables so people can sit and eat.... Oh, right.... that's a food court and every dumbass mall has one.

Wedding reception at a restaurant: on Grand Prix Weekend... help please?

As mentioned by others Little Italy is an ugly mess during the F1, as is Crescent, Old Montreal, Downtown, Lower Main, Middle Main, much of the Plateau etc etc... look into a neighbourhood spot (like M for Masson) that wouldn't jack prices during the F1. General rule of thumb, if you're local, stay out of restaurants on that weekend since their expectations of $$pp pretty much triples. Verdun sounds like a good option.

Montana....
also this must be a joke cause any quick search on this board will show that Montreal doesn't have food trucks...
also... does Victoria Day exist here?

Restaurant Openings in 2011

Hope he does okay there because it's a horrible location and a big stretch to call it Little Italy. Lots of condos have gone up recently which has made an odd mixture of sequestered yuppies among the massage parlours, cryptic bars and after hours rave joints.

SAT knows their clientele pretty well and don't really want people looking for a deal but get all the 20 something gaming people and cocktail fanatics that have enough cash for trendy food. The artists will eat elsewhere.

Restaurant with great music or pub with great food... ?

Great music is quite selective and I've never really eaten at a place thinking the music was great, although I have left a restaurant thinking the music sucked.
Usually, the better the music, the worse the food (Icehouse did have good music and food, but I see you want more upscale)... as you move more upscale your music gets more downtempo (dinner house and generic beats or at worse The Big Chill soundtracks 1,2,3 on shuffle).
Let me know if you find a restaurant with great tunes.

Question about Romados

I would also be annoyed and when people tell me I should sm:)e... well, that's even more reason not to. For the most part, the place is crazy busy and special requests and idle chit chat don't make for smiling.

Looking for a chill cafe where I can study in Mile End

If you live in area... it's pretty easy to figure out which places are chill or not. Does the quality of the coffee matter or do you just want a cafe that'll let you hang out all day?

They are not the same restaurant... Longueuil is Alfa Hot Dog while the Laval is Alfa Restaurant Regd. Also, logo and signage are significantly different thus if OP is recommending Alfa it would only be the Laval one.

Food to Bring Home to US from Mtl

As far as I know, you can't bring pâté over the border but as Duppie says it can be very dependent on who you get as an customs officer and if he/she actually asks if you have any food stuff.

New Yorker seeks BEST EATS in Montreal for friend's birthday

as someone mentioned Les Copains d'abord which make very good (not great) croissants, I quite like their brioches... no eggs but a small section to sit and have coffee. No old men but maybe some dimestore intellos.
Patati Patata IMO is quite an annoying student hangout and crazy cramped... if you're 4 waiting for a table don't expect any lounge time.
I prefer Maamm Bolduc for poutine in the eastern part of the plateau... definitely not a touristy area and you can pretty much set your own pace there.

Circuit du Paysan next weekend

My experience in the rougemont area is late-sept for the best quality for actual picking. You'll still have lots to pick from anyhoo just alot higher up in the trees and more rejects. It being thanksgiving weekend... not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
They probably will be riper next week but not sure what the lack of cold nights will have on the taste.

Food to Bring Home to US from Mtl

I was just puttin' it out there so they not be disappointed or at least be prepared. I would think an American crossing US customs would have less problem than a Canadian and it always depends on the customs guard. My appearance generally makes me a target thus I usually get the full treatment at airports and land crossings. An orange that was lovingly grown in Florida then shipped north to the fruitless in Quebec cannot return to its birthplace as an orange.

Before spending a pocket full of coin on some yummies, you might want to check out the customs and border laws concerning importing foodstuffs from our fair land. Some fromages are definitely on the watch list for their raw milk goodness.

Edit: a few rules for the foods

top 10 food to eat in Québec (the province)...

downtown Shawinigan is famous for its roulottes (food trailers) which I always found did good fries... I'd agree that you see converted buses that don't move or "shacks" but I don't remember any chip trucks.
but all in all I really don't get all this fuss about not having food trucks in Montreal, just because Eat St highlights a few good ones. For the most part, NA street food is not very good.
